Mod House Audio Tungsten - Planar Magnetic Headphones - Impressions and Discussion

Dang. Here I thought I should be coming up soon with my Jan 5th order. Guess not!

    Stax SR-X9000

Yeah, I understood, I just didn't remove that part so it still has the 8K dip and I was letting everyone know that the mic (as I used it) creates a dip around 8k. Didn't feel like cutting that off just yet, then the issue becomes getting it to stay seated in my ear. I suppose the best solution...

    Gammi's Mega Headphone Shootout

I just did a sine sweep and yeah, I hear it get a bit sharp around there. Only place in the sweep it hurts a little. Maybe also slightly at 10k-ish. Also agree with Solar's point that it's flanked by a small dip, 5k and 7k sounded like they dipped a bit. 3k too. Overall when it does deviate from...

    Stax SR-X9000

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I don't think the 6k peak is the mic, rather the dip after it down to about 8k. I had someone tell me previously that this mic has a dip at 8k and sure enough everything I tested had a dip around there. While most headphones had a peak at 6k, it was less...

    Stax SR-X9000

The Susvara vs X9000 comparison would up turning into a whole shootout between nine different high end headphones, so I made a new thread for it. https://www.head-fi.org/threads/gammis-mega-headphone-shootout.972886/

    Gammi's Mega Headphone Shootout

Just picked up some in ear microphones (MS-TFB-2-PREM) and did frequency sweeps on almost all of my headphones. Note: This mic has a treble dip at 8K, so ignore that for all readings. Upper treble gets messy on these sweeps anyway. Some thoughts: -Susvara and CA-1a both have odd resonances that...

    The Stax Thread III

Just got some in ear microphones and did an on head sweep with my X9000. Nice results, very flat, very smooth. Just the usual few dB hump around 1k. Posted them over in the X9000 thread and thought I should link over here too...

    Stax SR-X9000

Just got my in ear microphones today. Did a sweep left and right, then moved the mic around a little, and did another left and right sweep. Sub-bass drop off is less on head, only drops about 3dB at 20Hz and 2dB at 30Hz. As expected, there is the classic STAX hump around 1k. Starts ramping up...

    The Stax Thread III

I wonder why STAX ever stopped making transformer boxes. Seems to be a bad business decision to block out the entire market of people who don't want to buy a new amp just to use only with their headphones. (Which is most people)

    RAAL 1995 Immanis

Low 30s here. There are a handful of us trying to keep the hobby going in spite of being the Beats by Dre and AirPod generation :smile_phones:

I unfortunately just had to DIY the non-DIY transformer in my old Sansui AU-X11 amp when it blew a thermal fuse. Not fun  Miraculously somehow closed back up cleanly.

    RAAL 1995 Immanis

I've said it before but I continue to feel that "air of an estat with the impact of a dynamic" is a great way to describe ribbons. My favorite driver type.

    The Stax Thread III

I use 300wpc monoblocks with my transformers no problem. You can digitally attenuate it first if you want but then the issue there is if you accidentally turn that off, boom. So I just run it normal and make sure I always turn the volume down on the pre-amp first.

    RAAL 1995 Immanis

Regarding amps, I was most surprised with how great it sounded off of the $300 Jotunheim R. Feels weird hooking a $9k headphone up to it but I really think more people who are avoiding the Immanis/Magna because of price should consider that. If I had a $10k budget, I think I'd rather the $9k...

RAAL 1995 headphones, Magna and Immanis

If you all want to sign a petition for me to get my Immanis sooner I'll happily review it vs Susvara and X9000 for the good of everyone
