7ryder, no I did not get to compare cables...I didn't see the stock cable around.  Since it wasn't WyWires or HiFiMan's booth (HiFiMan loaned them the headphones but they were in the hotel next door) that wasn't surprising.   tinyman392, nice job on the color correction, that looks right.

To tell you the truth, I didn't notice the yoke difference, but it does look that way in the pictures.  I did notice that the 400i plastic trim looked pretty shiny.  I didn't really listen to that headphone.

I got back from the Newport show late last night.  It was a pleasure to speak with Eric from HiFiMan's NY office on several occasions on Sunday at the show.  I think Fang must have left for home by then.       The HE-560 on the left is the reddish finish, the middle phone is the lighter...

I just decided to drive down to the Newport show, and take my pre-order 560's with me.  If anyone wants to meet up with me on Sunday to do a comparison with the new version, send me a PM.

Here is a little information on the macassar ebony veneer used in the new version, from wood-database.com:

News flash:  the HE-560 IS waaaay cheaper than the Abyss.     Since no one here has seen the final production model of the HE-560, only pictures, I would reserve judgement.  It's a given, though, since not everyone likes the same thing, some people will be unhappy with it.  Such is life.  ...

My pre-order HE-560 has over 200 hours on it now, so I thought I would give some further comment.  I had originally planned to buy the LCD-X after borrowing a pair for a few days and then comparing them to their sister headphones at a meet, although the weight did bother me some.  When I read...

I just received mine today too.  I agree with tinyman's excellent review, after running them in for a few hours.  I am quite happy with them so far.  I wore them for a bit over an hour and found them pretty comfy, and not at all heavy.  As far as the wooden box goes, I was not expecting it so...

Official 2014 Bay Area Meet - SUNDAY - Feb 16th, 2014 Impressions thread

That's a really great system! I hope you can find a buyer that will buy the whole system. There is a lot of work that goes into getting the synergy working at a high level, so hopefully you will find someone that recognizes that.

Official 2014 Bay Area Meet - SUNDAY - Feb 16th, 2014 Impressions thread

Hi Stoney,   I'm not sure we've met but our paths have surely crossed as we are both in the bay area and both of us have attended many local events.  I was struck with what a great attitude you have toward dealing with your cancer.  There is not much you can do about the cancer, and it seems...

Official 2014 Bay Area Meet - SUNDAY - Feb 16th, 2014 Impressions thread

I didn't get a chance to listen to it, it seemed like his table was always very busy...he had some nice cans there too.  But fortunately, I won the software at the raffle!!!  I'm mac only so I'll have to wait about a month for the OS release, but I'm looking forward to it.  I would be interested...

    Official 2014 Bay Area Meet - SUNDAY - Feb 16th, 2014

I just spoke with Crashem and have taken up his generous offer to pick up his LCD-X as well as the Hugo amp if it is ready, and bring them to the meet for everyone to hear.  FrankCooter, I'd love to bring it by your setup and compare against the LCD-3, and get your opinion and from others about...

    Official 2014 Bay Area Meet - SUNDAY - Feb 16th, 2014

I would like to come but I wouldn't need a table as I will be somewhat portable.  I can bring the Audio Technica ATH-W3000ANV and the AD2000 headphones, a portable amp or two, Objective DAC and PowerBook with Pure Music, including some needle-drop recordings.

Advice for vinyl and headphones setup

Yes, you would only need a turntable with cartridge and a phono preamp.  An integrated amp would not be needed at all.  You might consider a preamp that has a phono input, as that would give you input switching and possibly tone controls.  You said most of your listening is through headphones...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

I had posted this earlier, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then so I will repeat it:  the Lepai has both a 3.5mm stereo jack and a pair of RCA jacks.  They are connected together so its only one input but two ways to connect.  You can certainly use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

JRG1990's suggestion is good, and cheap too.  Use only as much speaker wire as you comfortably need.   If you don't want to deal with the banana plugs you can use bare wires on the speakers too, but banana jacks are easier to use once you have them on the wires.  Just make sure that when you use...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

The Polk website has the Monitor 30 listed on their website in their vintage products list but I don't see the series II anywhere.  The only change I see is the color of the front behind the grill cloth, but its impossible to say what else is different.  Its a smaller box but same sensitivity...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

Yea, Uncle Eric to the rescue!  Good job.    The PSB Alpha are great speakers for the money.  The Polks are discontinued and deeply discounted so they may be a good value.  Stereophile has the Polk RTiA1 on their current recommended list and the RTi4 seems to be similar.  In fact they...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

I bought a 12/4A supply from one of those free ship international guys and took some measurements.  The Lepai actually put out more power with the supplied 2A supply than it did with the 4A supply!  Then I tried a HP power supply at 13.5v and 5A.  The extra voltage should have really helped but...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

An alternative to the Lapai amp would be the Dayton Audio DTA-100a, which is a higher power T-amp also from Parts Express.  I have not heard it but based on its Tripath chip I would expect it would sound good, and many reviews say it does.  It also has inflated power specs; you should consider...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

Stereophile magazine liked the Paradigm Atom v.6, the larger brother to the Micro monitor but mentioned slightly excessive treble and loose upper bass so system matching requires care.  Audiogon also has a pair of NHT SB1 for $150 shipped which is a pretty good deal.  This is kind of between the...

I'm thinking about getting my first stereo setup, and I have no idea where to start.

I see that Newegg.com has the primus P163 for $99 each with free shipping.  I have not heard them but their specs indicate that they should work with the Lepai amp.  The Lepai amp has both 3.5mm jack and RCA jacks for inputs (but only one input, just a choice of which jacks to use...the RCA...
