Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I came across this today when I was looking for videos on dovetail jigs. It’s an article on audio myths. It’s entertaining and the authors heart is in the right place but I don’t think the statements are quite that cut and dried. The tube vs transistor section is one I would take issue with.

You can do pretty much the same thing with a motor -generator set. I used to install them all the time for sensitive equipment. You can even get them that put out 400 hz AC which makes DC filtering easier. They are big though. Probably overkill for audio equipment though.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Where I used to live (Portland, OR) almost every day in the summer the incoming voltage to the house would drop to as low as 85 volts at 55 hz. I called the power company and they installed a line monitor. Turned out they switched sources around when folks started to come home and turn on...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

My setup is very simple: USB out of the Mac Mini to Bifrost II to Freya S to my power amp and speakers. To play the music I use iTunes. I used to use Audivarna? but lost the license file somewhere and haven’t bothered to get it back.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Sometimes I think I’m that person which may be my budget talking. I enjoy listening to well recorded music over different speakers but I hate shopping for them. Speaking of well recorded music I just bought all the Mahler symphonies with Leonard Bernstein conducting. The first symphony, the...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Good evening all, I’m listening to Mozart’s Requiem via Mac mini, Bifrost, Freya S and Acura’s A100 electronics and Focal 726 Chorus speakers. My question is, what are the symptoms of failing caps in my 30 year old Acurus power amp? Recently it seems that the music doesn’t have the presence or...

Because nobody wants that much ammonia near their home. They’re also much less efficient. If you have free heat though the efficiency may not be important.

I would add: Saint Saens organ symphony, Widor toccata, Poulenc: Concerto for organ, timpani and strings.

I gave up and used my label maker to print ones I can read, at least for the settings I actually use. On both the remote and the DAC and preamp.

Nothing that can’t be fixed by popping out the remote and using a little 800-1200 grit wet or dry sandpaper. You could polish it to a high gloss, spray on some clear krylon and have a very smooth remote…

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

A long time back there was a guy on one of the TV talk shows that could look at the pattern of the grooves on an LP and tell you the name of the piece. This is easy with Tchaikovsk’s 1812 overature due to the cannon shots—especially the recording by the Cincinnati Pops—but how he got so many...

So, what is stored on the disc then, the width of each pulse? Or, just a stream of 1’s and 0’s that on a ‘scope would look like a PWM stream?

Reminds me of my days in college practicing the pipe organ in the college chapel. It had a rank of 32 foot pipes under the floor. Play Bach or Widor, pull out that stop and watch everyone in the audience looking around.

Ort, for motorcycle stuff I like Fortnine. Ryan doesn’t post often but what he does is almost always worthwhile. He has a very good video on how to lean your bike at slow speeds. Ray

Something I’ve long wondered is how the upsampling is done. Is it a linear interpolation between any two points or some sort of spline that goes through multiple points? I would think the latter could help reduce the filtering requirements but might have a difficult time with transients. Ray

I’m not convinced that standards have been lowered, rather you need to know more for the same job. I could never get my first job now with what I knew then. I’ve been in the high tech industry almost 40 years and you absolutely need to know more to fill the same role than you did even 10 years...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

As you say, it depends very much on your equipment. I’m using the Freya S pre-amp, Bifrost 2(now, Cambridge Dac Magic before) Acura’s power amp and Focal 726 speakers. All of them were selected with the goal of detail, especially for midrange instruments. When I go to concerts I’m usually on...

All, I am the new owner of a Freya S and Bifrost 2 DAC. It was a bit of an adventure getting things working because “audible volume dial setting” on the Freya was VERY different than my Parasound. That is now sorted and I believe I’ve noticed two things: the ambience seems much better (fingers...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

All, my Yamaha CD-600 CD player is dying. It’s 25 years old so it doesn’t owe me anything. I can‘t afford the new Schiit CD transport but was wondering how I might do by purchasing a $500 or so player and a Bifrost DAC? Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome. Thanks, Ray

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I use a APC AV Black 1.5kVA H Type Power Conditioner that I bought when we lived in Portland, OR. Every weekday around 5:00 the voltage would drop, sometimes as low as 95 volts and the frequency could go to 56 Hz. This unit has a multi tap transformer that kept my stereo happy. Eventually I...
