Aegis DIY Tube Headphone Amplifier
If the LL2758 heater windings were rated for 3A and it was just a matter of adding the right diodes, I'd say it's worth a try. But we're talking about adding an additional transformer to the amplifier to accomplish this, which is the bigger problem. The amp is not laid out to accommodate it...- L0rdGwyn

Aegis DIY Tube Headphone Amplifier
Keep in mind this is the B+ rectifier, meaning any noise introduced by those diodes is now in the B+ supply. I haven't tested this as there are better solutions, but I wouldn't recommend it for a rectifier filament winding. For a cathode heater, it matters much less and is probably fine.- L0rdGwyn

Aegis DIY Tube Headphone Amplifier
The value of the resistors in spec'd to reach 5V from the 6V windings of the Lundahl mains transformer with the rectifiers drawing 2A of current. If you use the same value of resistor for a 3A rectifier, you are going to get an addition 50% voltage drop across them due to the additional 1A of...- L0rdGwyn

The (Un)Official Amp Thread For ZMF Headphones
Got a four day weekend off, doing some listening with my beloved Atrium Open this morning. With my chassis maker on hiatus and the Aegis project(s) done, first time in a while I'm not actively working on an amplifier (although, I really want to be). Trying to use the time to get back in touch...- L0rdGwyn

The (Un)Official Amp Thread For ZMF Headphones
Yeah Aegis is technically a SET amp even though it uses a different output stage than most other SET amps. SET is a generic term, but it is generally used to describe single-ended triode amplifiers that are transformer coupled (even though the generic name “single-ended triode” would also...- L0rdGwyn

Despite their small size, they're actually 6L6 types, so they can take a lot of bias.- L0rdGwyn

I can add a field to say which rectifiers are good to use for the lower powered stuff too. Also gives me an excuse to buy more tubes for research purposes 😎- L0rdGwyn

Stock is a Sovtek GZ34 / 5AR4. I'll make a little info guide in my reserved post on the first page and link it tomorrow with rectifier info. Most rectifiers other than GZ34 / 5AR4 should be okay with low power tubes. GZ32 / 5V4 is also lowish voltage drop so the tubes could still be biased on...- L0rdGwyn

I believe plate dissipation is 23W, so you don't have to limit to 5R4, can use any rectifier. Anything less than 13-14W have to consider what rectifier you're going to use.- L0rdGwyn

TRS has the lowest output impedance on Aegis so that's the one you'd want to use with DCA headphones. Could try XLR low setting with 11ohms output impedance, might be okay but damping ratio is 2:1.- L0rdGwyn

Same as the DCA stuff, would want to use the low setting on TRS out. They're more sensitive than the DCA, the volume will be there, just a matter of how the LCD-5 responds to a 3:1 damping ratio. Could be great, but we'll have to wait for someone to try it.- L0rdGwyn

No not really, it just changes the output tube bias point a bit. Peak power output may go down some, but for driving ZMFs, there is a huge excess of headroom.- L0rdGwyn

That's a good question, I think if there's one headphone type that would push it hard, it would be a low impedance (less than 32ohm), low sensitivity planar, like the DCA Stealth / Expanse. That is really the toughest load for any amplifier, a low impedance, high current driver. TRS low...- L0rdGwyn

Well don't do anything you'll regret later! And as far as tube rolling as little as possible, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I rarely tube roll in my personal amplifiers nowadays. Of course I may be biased, but I think if you're looking for an amp that doesn't NEED to be tube...- L0rdGwyn

Yeah that's probably the safer approach. Well let us know how those EL84 sound. I should get a pair of adapters myself and try them out! I'm sure they are great, a legendary audio tube in its own right. Thanks! It's hard to say, as time goes on I put less stock in boutique components...- L0rdGwyn

I think it's a matter of flavor. The only person I know who has used EL84 in Aegis is @goldwerger . Generally though, lower power / current tubes are going to have lower peak power output and a slightly higher output impedance. My very limited experience using 6V6 in Aegis is they don't quite...- L0rdGwyn

Yeah those are all plug and play without adapters. The only catch is with some of the lower power tubes (like 6V6), you might want to use a higher voltage drop rectifier than the stock GZ34, for example 5U4, 5R4, or 5Y3. This will extend the life of the 6V6. All of the others are high power...- L0rdGwyn
