I compare the PB5 on a regular basis to my desktop, Cayin 300B MKII, and while they are understandably a little different, I don't feel I miss anything with the PB5 or the Cayin. The Cayin is also upgraded with WE300B tubes, Duelund caps and a few other niceties. The PB5, IMO, is amazing!
I don't agree that the PB5 is not a bargain. For what you get, it is everything a bargain is.
Thanks for the review. Entirely agree with your comments. Mine isn't fully burned in yet (probably only got 10-15 hours on it so far). Will be interesting to see if the bass opens up like you mentioned.
I can easily see this combination beating a lot of desktop systems out there for a lot less money - especially with neutral/brighter headphones/iems.
I'm keen to hear more comments from those who have also purchased the D16. My only thought is that maybe it will tilt the sound a bit too much on the warmer side for my preference (the PB5/320MAX is already a warm combination).
Wow this is quite a statement jamato8. Are you using the same DAC, source and cans when you compare PB5 to your desktop amp? That amp is quite a reference in the tube amp world, it's almost unbelievable that a small, battery portable amp would provide sound on the same level. BTW I don't question that the PB5 is a fantastic portable amp, just the comparison with the 300B MKII that seems a bit strange.
Hi. Great review. I want to add this PB5 to my chain. My DAP is Cayin N7 and IEMs being RN6 and Twilight. Is it wise to add PB5 into my chain or does it make it too warm setup in the end? TIA.
