It rolls off at about 75 Hz, there is virtually NO subbass. It also does not move nearly enough air under 150 Hz. BH Crack magically gives it a bump from 20-35 Hz, but my mammoth Rag 1 running XLR does not. Great mid & classical can. Great deal used or new. Lower highs missing detail. EQ cannot fix them in the bass - they just can't move enough air. Metal heads/Abyss fans look elsewhere. Soundstage is small, and instruments are not correctly placed at times.

Great review but when it comes to the HD-600 vs the HD-650 or the HD-6XX it's a harder choice for me .
Vocals are brought front and center with the 650 and I don't really get the veil that others attribute to the 6 series.
But the 600s do add a clarity that the 650 does not have .
So of all the 6 series my favorite is a toss up between the 600 and the 650 with the 660s taking third place just above the 58X .
I have all of the 6 series and all have their place in my collection .

Nice write up about a true classic that still holds up nicely against the current market after 22 years.

I wouldn't call the build 'robust' however and also the bass heavily rolls off below 100Hz. Sub bass is not elevated, it is missing.

Great review! I have to highly disagree with my fellow Head-Fiers that bass heavily rolls off, and that sub bass is missing. Listening to " Bass Resonance test " - Chesky's Ultimate Demonstration Disc while using FabFilter's Pro-Q plug-in and isolating 50Hz in a narrow Q, the HD 600 not only are not lacking sub bass, their quantity is quite appropriate. I then pounded my ears listening to some electronica. To my ears nothing was missing or out of place.

At 40 Hz they are way down. Try 1/3 octave to see they down at 67 Hz too. You just have to be prepared, use an alternate can.

great review! Imagine, a twenty year old headphone, still being reviewed and still available to purchase. I use mine regularly. If you think they scale well, just try them balanced.
cheers

These and HD800 are legends. I still usually see some new IEMs/cans being release and someone compares them to the 800's in the first place.
