HFM be doing thangs.

Are they the only company that currently makes a dynamic, elctrostat and planar now?
Edition S: dynamic
Shangri-La: electrostat
everything else: planar

Sennheiser doesn't make a planar
Fostex doesn't make an electrostat
Koss doesn't make a planar

my guess is they price them the same as the HE1000, but also release a HFM amp for them that gets you for another $1500 or so.

According to the founder and CEO of HIFIMAN on his Weibo (China's version of Twitter). The Shangri-La electrostatic headphone and amplifier combo isn't going to be cheaper than a BYD Tang SUV (MSRP CN¥300,000~250,000 or about $45,750~$38,000 USD).

Edit: Add full translation of his tweet;

"Let's talk about something a bit more serious. HIFIMAN is going to show the codename Shangri-La electrostatic headphone engineering sample at CES Las Vegas next week. It featured submicron thickness membrane plated with nanoparticle. The amplifier featured 300B tubes. These tubes are the best 300B tubes in the world made by Mr. Liu himself from TJ FullMusic Tubes. The headphone and amplifier combo won't be cheaper than a BYD Tang. It will be released in the first half of 2016."

(note: His last few tweets before this one were about a BYD Tang he owned. This is why he use it for comparison.)

Edit#2: The starting price of the aforementioned SUV is CN¥300,000 (~$45,750), but apparently there are government incentives for plug-in hybrid car in China. If it was taken into account the starting price of the SUV will be about CN¥250,000 or ~$38,000 USD.

ROFL, they just want to outdo the Orpheus II price
biggrin.gif
... it sure will make some headlines.
To be able to call this kind of dough, they better improve the manufacturing quality a little.
$3k for the HEK already seems a stretch even for those who love the sound.

I'll try to get ears on these on Friday when I hit CES.

Sounds like it.
External design is virtually identical to the HEK. No detachable cables by the looks of it :)
