I hear that same slight, slight hiss in my RA-1, too. The best comparison that I can make to another audio concept is like with a really low-frequency sine wave, it's more of an inaudible feeling rather than a solid sound.

When I turn up the amp all the way, hiss comes from the right channel much more, and even takes on a bit of a grrr or tizz or whatever. Other than that, it's just that "feeling" and I only really notice it when I unplug the cans (RS-1s) from the unit. This may or may not have an effect on the music, but I like to think that it doesn't, at least not that much.

Overall, I am satisfied with everything and wouldn't personally go through the bother of returning (and missing) it.
