Im fairly sure the SLP-88 inverts polarity in the gain stage. How does this effect headphone listening? I'm wondering if it's corrected at the headphone output. Any clue?

I agree, Cheap/good sounding used turntables start at around $400. I would save your pennys and look for a used Rega P3 on the Gon for around $500 or the Music Hall MMF-5 can be found between $350-$400. Remember a worn cartridge can destroy your LP's and new (decent) cartridges start around...

Why not a step or ladder set-up? If your going to take it apart, might as well go all out. While your in there put a switch for input selection or convert it to a pass through. Just some ideas.... How far can you take the MG Head MKIII? Post some pics of the inside of the unit and power...
