    HiFiMan Susvara

DCA Stealth looks way better in graphs but sound dead next to Susvara though

    HiFiMan Susvara

God Tier amps already provides that legendary HE-6 slam with significantly better texture and definition of the Susvara

    Can you hear upscaling?

WTA filter with 32-bit float of dynamic range goes down to -300dBFS of filtering at Nyquist per Rob Watts and his claim is that people can still hear transients that differs from a typical DAC filter that goes down 120dB level of attenuation and a more gentle slope than his brickwall sinc WTA filter

    Can you hear upscaling?

Target audience in the Quartet thread are obviously audiophile subjectivists without much interest in digital sampling theory other than more taps = better sound so discussion about technical aspect of the WTA filter is almost nonexistent

I run the GZ32 with the KT88 so should be no problem with EL33

    Can you hear upscaling?

Some CD recorded samples can be clipped generating a filter response of a square and some digital created synths can certainly contain square or rectangular waves that can also reveal filter response Remember the Archimago examples I provided on the closed thread

    Can you hear upscaling?

With Chord DACs, DSD is converted back to 16fs PCM though but if the DSD conversion from HQPlayer is excellent to begin with, there will be measurable differences in the output from a Chord WTA filter applied to PCM from converted DSD to PCM from the FPGA programming

ZMF Pendant by Ampsandsound; impressions, tube-rolling, and general discussions

Awesome! Lots of tubes to roll! Mogwai amp family are known for that soundstage and clean delivery! Slams like a truck too on planars! You can also roll some 5U4 and 5AR4 rectifiers too! Don't forget to visit the main ampsandsound thread for more tube impressions there!

What KT88 is that? 12AU7 and even 12BH7 would be good input tubes for the Mogwai :) 6L6GC are also very good!

I'm pretty sure eventually you'll design one in the future :) Hum pots should be able to mitigate some of that :)

Having heard the DNA Supernaut, I’d say Aegis is a close second on the noise floor performance

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Yep. Aegis on its own though is naturally wide and open and its agility to resolve microtransients and layer them on that wide open space is what makes it special

    HiFiMan Susvara

Haven’t heard the 3xGT, v550 and the iCan Phantom unfortunately. OOr gives more slam and better bass texture than MJ3, but MJ3 retrieves details better and has better smoothness and refinement in the mids than OOR to me. Mentor would be the most detailed and nuanced out of the three amps

KT66 is your tube of choice for that :). You get improved clarity and closest to a DHT tonality of the 300B/2A3 tubes

Thanks! Yep! KT66 is one of the closest to a DHT in terms of tonality IMHO

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Don’t be haha! How do you find the GEC KT66 in the soundstage category? I like everything about the TAD except I’m also spoiled with KT88 holographic and expansive soundstage. TAD sounds like I just turned off HQPlayer and run straight non oversampling on the DAC as an analogy

You’re gonna make me broke by getting too curious with the GEC KT66 haha

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

TAD KT66 sounds exactly what I would expect out of the KT66 variant: strong bass, lots of lower to high mid presence and smooth but extended treble. Less soundstage holography than JJ KT88 or any KT88 but much thicker note timbre overall yet still detailed sounding. Preferred the KT66 with the...

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Totally forgot that all the gain from the Aegis is from 6SL7 input tube. Yep, rolling tubes on this won't change the max SPL that this amp will do, but will impart the tube characteristic of the output tube. Currently rolling a KT66, just the sexiest tube on the tetrode family IMHO. The blue hue...

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

I'm using 6SU7GTY with JJ KT88 and Mullard GZ32 for the Susvara. Sound is a bit laid back relative to the best amps I've heard out of the Sus and super smooth but that allows me to crank the Aegis up to almost max on the pot without any fatigue or harshness

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Night and day! Aegis has better driver control and a lot closer to my God Tier dream amps: (Zhal HM-1, AIC-10 Bal, MK-465 and EF1000)

    ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Under indirect A/B comparison with those Wa23, Envy and Red October, Aegis has less romantic sound signature than those three DHT amps. In terms of detail retrieval, I would need to have them side by side to know

    HiFiMan Susvara

I swear by Midgard driving the Susvara to get it to sound at least on par with the HE1000V2 as the broke college student setup that put all his budget on the Susvara. Still though MJ3 or Flux Mentor at bare minimum full stop if you want to barely scratch Susvara in its true form
