Beyerdynamic DT-880 600ohm, brand new in box, for CAD$130, which works out to under USD$100. I actually already owned this headphone when I stumbled across this deal, but couldn't resist buying a "backup" set.

Very difficult to drive may be overstating things. I find the 880/600 performs brilliantly with a mid-fi amp like the SMSL HO200. If I try to use them with a portable (and likely voltage-constrained) source like the Fiio BTR7, the bass loses impact, transients sound throttled and less dynamic...

Question for those who have experience with the Tres as well as a range of Hifiman planars... How far up the Hifiman range do you have to go to cleanly "beat" the Tres? Edition XS? Arya? HE-1000?

I just did a little back-and-forth testing, and the only (very, very slight) difference I'd say I was able to detect is that the DO200/HO200 sounds slightly thicker and the BTR7 slightly drier in the mid-bass ... and given the tonal characteristics of the Tres, that touch of dryness is perfectly...

To my ear, my FiiO BTR7 drives them with equal authority and impact compared to my SMSL DO200/HO200 stack. Both running 4.4mm balanced output. *edit* I have the Tres 45ohm, not the Tres SE.

One thing my "new" CD player has done is it's forced me to listen to my headphones unequalized. So with the SASH Tres for example, I can either anguish over the relatively soft upper mids and smoothed treble, or I can just settle down, accept the sound signature for what it is, and appreciate...
