The state of smartphones and the death of the headphone jack

I'm not totally dismayed, except that the phone companies don't really advertise if they already have a DAC onboard or not. I have worn out a few 3.5mm jacks on phones from multiple headphone plugs a day and the associated strain. If USB-C is more robust of a connector, good. I can buy USB-C...

KZ ATE Comparisons for the undecided

So you've heard and read lots about the KZ ATE.  But like me you were still sort of on the fence about letting go of that $10US.  Well, unlike you, one day I woke up and said "it's $10, I gotta stop losing sleep over $10 and get my new IEM fix".  And about 3-4 weeks later I had it.  Now I offer...

Review by 'inline79' on item 'Sennheiser PX 95 Versatile On-Ear Headphones'

I'm an on-ear open junkie, so this high praise says a lot about the PX95.  A list of on-ear opens I have in various drawers:  AKG K403, PX100-ii, PortaPros, Jays V-Jays, SR-80 and some more that I can't remember right now.  My current favourite is the PX95.   Finally, an on-ear open that...

modded Urbanears Plattan - surprisingly competent and bass heavy

Doesn't yours have a jack on the other cup?  So it's already wired for it, give it a try!

    [REVIEW] Urbanears Bagis

Though late to this reply, I want to give some props to the Bagis - it's not all doom and gloom as above.   OK, I agree that the bass extension is missing - it really drops off somewhere below 100Hz but the mid-bass is decent.   Mids and Highs are not that bad.  I've heard worse.  It...

modded Urbanears Plattan - surprisingly competent and bass heavy

This is way overdue, but I also have a broken Plattan which someone gave me to do my magic.  I found the easiest fix wasn't to recable, but just to cut the old cable off at the exit and plug in a 3.5mm extension cord on the right side!   Gonna try some of these mods next, sound is pretty...

Vancouver Audiophile Meet May 18, 2014!

Thanks for the alert. I'm in, but need to know when. I'll bring my usual collection of neat junk. The MDR-F1 was a big hit last time, but seeing your faces on hearing the K270 was priceless!

SE530/535 Acoustic Filter Mod: More SQ improvement than cables? Dampers!

The boys at the Ety "NRB" thread say the Ety greys are not the same as the Knowles greys: http://www.head-fi.org/t/626457/nrb-mod-nut-rattlin-bass-from-an-ety-yes-yes-yes-how-to-nrb-mod   But the greens are the same.  BTW the cheapest source I found for these filters is Westone where they are...

What are head-fi members views on apt-x lossless codec (over bluetooth)?

FWIW I also agree that hardware can definitely affect the quality of a BT headphone. I mean after decompressing apt-x or A2DP/SBC, there's still got to be an amplifier section that can make or break the sound quality. My personal example is my car, which has a spectacular sound system yet...

What are head-fi members views on apt-x lossless codec (over bluetooth)?

Follow-up: a few days after the above, I bought a Sennheiser MM450x which has apt-x. Then somehow my BlackBerry Q10 magically got apt-x. I gotta say, this is a killer combo. Can't go back to A2DP like in my car!

The Deals DISCUSSION Thread (READ THE FIRST POST!!!)

I also got an E7 with a dead battery.  Opened it up and checked - 0.01V.  Dead.  Don't even bother charging it or *poof*!  Refund on the way, so I get a free E7 for the price of a new battery... that's a good deal!   BTW, Beyer DT880 and 990 600ohm on sale at NCIX $250 and $260CAD...

Sennheiser MM450-x Travel Hints and Tips

Hi.  I didn't see any coherent thread for these awesome headphones so thought I'd start with one.   Overall: Currently these are the best BT, NC, highly portable headphones out there. Nothing else comes close except maybe the MM550X (not tested). But I am watching for UE's next UE9000. The UEs...

Review by 'inline79' on item 'Sennheiser MM 450 Flight Bluetooth Multimedia Headset with Noise Cancellation - Black'

General Review Unfortunately not the be-all-end-all. After seeing and hearing the MM450X at the Frankfurt Airport I though it had it all and could do it all: Bluetooth apt-x, noise cancelling, bluetooth headset, wired passive, talk-through, compact and foldable, easy to recharge, and with...

SE530/535 Acoustic Filter Mod: More SQ improvement than cables? Dampers!

Oh maybe you can tell us if the Ety filter is the same as the knowles browns. A page or 2 back I posted my comparison of Ety vs grey which is all I have. The Ety filters are green plastic housings with filter material that looks beige or brown. I have SE530 not 535 so I can't really compare...

SE530/535 Acoustic Filter Mod: More SQ improvement than cables? Dampers!

This also works with the SE530 which I'm experimenting with. Grey filters - very grainy, too bright for my taste. Etymotic green housing/brown material - Excellent balance, maybe slightly bass heavy, still a bit of grain. Using the attenuator helps. Unfortunately I my stock filters are broken...

Don't use this eBay Bluetooth Dongle to DIY BT HPs

Thanks vantt1! Cool project. Yeah, I don't blame the OVC, but rather the designer of this board or the programmer of it. The amp also seems to be unnecessary as the OVC has an hp out. There are also aptx proto boards out there, but nothing will be small enough! Which BT headphones did you...

Review by 'inline79' on item 'MEElectronics M6-CL In-Ear Headphones (Clear)'

Pleasant overall. The bit of extra bass extension should please most but is not boomy.  Strong details and depth which might even be a bit harsh in the treble.  Great for orchestral.   Worn over the ear only so no microphonics.  tri-flanges isolate well, but can be generally difficult to...

Review by 'inline79' on item 'MEElectronics M2P-BK In-Ear Headphones with Inline Microphone(Black)'

Detailed highs are slightly noisy, no soundstage at all,  thumpy, boomy bass can be annoying and mids are weaker.  Definite V profile w/ sibilance.  Excellent for Sci Fi movies! Minimal microphonics - none when worn over.  Great accessories - bi-flange works great and metal body is a nice...

Review by 'inline79' on item 'Brainwavz Beta (V2)'

Very nicely balanced overall. Bass very slightly lacking, but this is a matter of taste.  Lots of tips to choose from, and came with foamies!   Cheaply put together though.  Loads of microphonics.  Clip is useless.  Thought I heard some imbalance but it went away with burn-in.  Questionable...

Review by 'inline79' on item 'Superlux HD-668 B'

Just generally good and hard to find fault with.  Not really deep low bass, but enough to be pleasant.  Mid-bass has good presence and there is excellent clarity and detail in mids and highs. I found soundstage to be a little congested and overall a bit of a "thin" sound.  While many people have...
