I’m going to parrot the advice of others, but I think you are asking a bit much from an earbud :) Most people have actually chosen IEMs as Their Way. Not us of course, but you may find that to be true for yourself as well… With that said, you can DIY and earbud for that money that will compete...- Ronion

Then my apologies @RikudouGoku. It read like you were trying to sell people stuff under false pretense and it did frustrate me. There's a lot of that in audio and I don't like it for all for the obvious reasons. Since you seem to have actually had no ill intent, then it's my bad and I'm sorry...- Ronion

This is exactly correct. If FiiO had make the claim I would have called it out as well. I never claimed that the nibs wouldn’t alter the sound. I’ve tuned to many earbuds to think that. I didn’t say that they would probably make it a bit brighter and change the shape of the treble. That you...- Ronion

I've had Kenyon on ignore for a long time, but Woody's post prompted me to look. When you read his post you can tell I've angered him but he fully agrees with me on the facts. I mean he's tried to change my argument and he also tries the red herring approach, but he fully agrees with me. An...- Ronion

Sorry that's what you got out of that whole thing. you should reread what I've written as your statements are factually incorrect. It could very easily be viewed in an entirely different light. I've gotten a few PMs saying the exact opposite thing... initially I was just hoping to correct an...- Ronion

I'm sure he fully understands that the 'diffuser' isn't diffusing as does everyone else at this point. I did say I'd be willing to give them an honest review. Since the maker and I are not buddies, you wouldn't get a falsely positive bias, but I'm sure the maker would fear a falsely negative...- Ronion

The point still is that they are not causing diffusion as claimed and even have some pseudo-trademark to make it seem like they were researched and in some way unique. The measurement say they make an already bright bud even brighter. Brighter headphone’s have been shown to have a more...- Ronion

I think we both agree that the advertising point is incorrect and an obvious false claim and that the dots do something. What are we disagreeing on? No Rayleigh scattering is going to even come close to mattering here--not that it even matters because that's not diffusion. Not that diffusion would even help in this circumstance and especially in the region of 10-20kHz and doubly so in an earbud shell. You won't be able to get around this...- Ronion

Those little globs are going to redirect audible sound waves just about as much as driving over a coin in the road is going to divert your car which is exactly why I used the analogy earlier. Those pyramids don’t diffuse sound whatsoever. We both know that. I never questioned wether they would do something. I just know that they can’t do diffusion. It would take many of these shells on a wall to diffuse the upper reaches of human hearing. We know the measurements are not on the...- Ronion

I am not at all familiar with Focal’s design, but suffice to say that they are not getting any useful diffusion in a headphone. They might be able to get some—we’d have to check an online calculator at 20kHz. They’re definitely not getting it at 1kHz. Again, not even close. You wouldn’t want...- Ronion

Well, they just deleted my post again and I’m not sure why so I’ll just say it again in a way that avoids talking about the situation at hand. I'm surprised that you spent that much money and didn't have at least a probable theory about how they could possibly work and didn't try to argue your point with something at least pseudo-substantive. That certainly couldn't prove or disprove diffusion. That would have nothing to do with diffusion. You literally can't diffuse sound inside a space that small. Much like you can't have even distribution of African mammals inside a regular soda can. I don't fear subjectivity as long as it's...- Ronion

I like they way they look as well, but they are not acoustic thingies other than they take up some space in the shell. ;) Physics are physics and those things are not even close to diffusers. Kudos on the shape of those shells! Very cool. Unfortunately those little nubs are way too small to effect any audible wavelengths (for humans) in any meaningful way. That's why no other company uses anything like that--they understand the fundamentals of acoustics (and beyond). I like the...- Ronion

It’s interesting because a zobel shouldn’t be able to change the frequency response unless possibly you are using a high output impedance amp. I know people who use them in full range configurations or even tweeter circuits, but not because of anything measurable in the frequency domain, but...- Ronion
