Which filter are you using? I use the red one (bassy), since the reference one is a little bright for me. I also find IEMs uncomfortable when wearing for the first time in a while. I find these comfortable after a brief period of acclimating, but everyone's ears are different.

I find it plays great with my Grado Hemp from the 3.5mm input as well, with volume around 50-60%. I've also heard it does well with other Grados.

What country are you in? If you're in the US, there are several decent options on Drop, all under $300. I've owned the AKG K7XX and Q701, both are good, but I wouldn't recommend them for metal. No fast enough, not enough impact/slam. Super comfortable, though.
