RAAL 1995 headphones, Magna and Immanis

You’ve been my favorite audio designer for a while now 👍🏼

THE WATERCOOLER HEADPHONE EDITION – Headphones, Amps, DACs, and desktop/home audio related – a freewheeling discussion of gear, impressions, music, and musings.

Congrats and welcome back to HP world! You should upgrade the DAC first and If you find that 1266 TC is lacking in midrange (recessed), then I’d suggest you try Accurate Sound convolution filter (assuming you use a computer or a server that can run convolution filters). It’s a $225 purchase but...

This review is outdated. He has since tried Susvara with other amps, and he concluded that the best amp for Susvara is Trafomatic Primavera.

RAAL-requisite: The Official VM-1a Discussion Thread

Unfortunately I don’t have VM-1a. If I remember correctly, you can also use 6SL7 tubes with VM-1a, but it will have more gain than 6SN7. I only have experience with 6SL7, since my preamp uses that. The best sounding of the lot in my system is Mullard ECC35 short brown base tall bottle (a little...

An interesting take. It shows that people hear things differently. Btw, Magna has 2 ribbon drivers and Immanis has 3, not one. Or perhaps what you mean is one type of driver?

No problem. Btw if you’re into vintage jazz, Valkyria is the perfect choice for that. It adds the much needed weight for old jazz recordings and it sort of breathes a new life into my vintage jazz library.

THE WATERCOOLER HEADPHONE EDITION – Headphones, Amps, DACs, and desktop/home audio related – a freewheeling discussion of gear, impressions, music, and musings.

It’s a bit of hit and miss. I found that some of the sound quality of the sources used are not that good and it’s reflected on the digital copy. Usually if the source is a 4-track studio master IPS tape, the quality is noticeably better than the 2-track ones. You can check in each album’s...

RAAL 1995 headphones, Magna and Immanis

This is actually the first TOTL headphone that has consistent positive impressions from fellow members here. I’ve been a fan of Raal since the early days of SR-1a, continued with CA-1a and now I really can’t wait to get my hands on Immanis. Kudos to @Aleksandar R.

The JPS Labs: Abyss AB-1266 Impressions Thread

I would agree that CRBN’s soundstage on my setup is huge and spacious. The overall sound is highly resolving as well (do note that I’m using Bob Katz’ EQ which improves the tonality). What I love most about the CRBN is female vocals, they sound very very lifelike.

If your library consists of mainly music with lots of sub-bass, then Valkyria won’t be a good fit. It excels with live and acoustic instruments, that’s why it really fits my tastes as I listen to mainly jazz and classical pieces.

The JPS Labs: Abyss AB-1266 Impressions Thread

How come it took you so long to listen to TC with Envy? 😁 But I agree, I also “re-discovered” TC with my Primavera + 300B preamp, and it sounds fantastic. No more metallic/un-natural treble, and very even frequency range from top to bottom, plus seductive vocals and midrange 👍🏼

As @Hiker816 said, it’s totally different between Susvara and Valkyria. The overall presentation is darker with Valkyria, but it does have more realistic timbre and the notes are very weighty. Piano strikes are the most lifelike I’ve ever heard from a pair of headphones and Valkyria’s strength...

Maybe you can create a convolution filter for Valkyria just like you did with Pulsar and we can get to try it 😁

I could be wrong, but I can’t seem to find Caldera in his signature. That’s why I posted my earlier message.
