AudioQuest NightHawk Impressions and Discussion Thread

Replacement headband and earpads would be really nice for the Nighthawk/owl.

I also believe you can buy or 3d print new connectors.

Anyone know where one can get new pads for these? I really like the cloth/alcantara? pads more than the protein leather. I just know they won't last forever.

Dark bass headphones? [Winner: Audioquest Nightowl]

The XTC is probably one of the best pair of headphones I've ever owned or tried. At a canjam two years ago I tried a bunch and actually settled on a Meze 109 Pro. This is my go to open back and XTC is my go to closed back. Literally everything else I've tried (and I've tried many) is nice and...

Oh, I see now. Well that's a bit weird. Do people often look for left/right "handed" headphones? Is that a thing? (maybe I'm dense sorry)

Am I crazy or does their product photo look like there's a jack on the other cup? Other photos clearly show it just on one side, but I swear the one shot looks like an empty hole there.

I would email and ask JM, but he does spend a bit of time understanding what you're after. These are a fairly custom built headphone. There's a starting point that has a strong direction, but remember there's XTC open, closed back and two different types of drivers. Also there's been a few...

    JM Audio Editions XTC Headphones

So I've been curious about measurements for JM's headphones for a while, though I mostly don't take too much stock in measurements. Many variables and it all depends on how something sounds on your head to your ears. You like what you like. Though I still like looking at graphs because it can...

Yes, I just saw this. They look awesome. I knew he was working on a new designs with partners. I think these are terrific.

There's probably a good thread about that somewhere. Specifically for the each model as well I imagine. Usually headphones get their own dedicated thread.

The metal band lets you adjust that a bit. I wouldn't jog with them. They are secure but not too tight. I did gently bend the band to reduce clamp force and it's fine. Though I may have a smaller head too.

Speaking of amps, I recently got a Woo Audio WA6 tube amp and the XTC sounds awesome on the WA6. That's the tl;dr version. Here's the story version with some details and caveats (don't just get an amp without expecting to change anything else like it's going to solve all your problems...it...

Sure, but the room you had was quiet when I was there with about 6 people in the room. 🤷‍♂️ I mean I like your headphones. I also like JMs. This thread is about the XTC. So I'm trying to stay on topic here and I think everyone else is just trying to compare and contrast things. I don't think...

    JM Audio Editions XTC Headphones

It's really a preference thing to be honest. For me my preferences were; Caledera, Eikon (which I guess isn't sold anymore), Atticus, Verite Closed, and then I guess Atrium, Aeolis and some others just started to lump in somewhere there after that. This certainly surprised me because I thought I...

This is a very good point and I've heard that. I assume the ZMF booth at the last SoCal CanJam was setup with proper amps to drive the headphones though. The Caldera was sublime...and again, just funny enough, but I preferred the Eikon to the Veritie Closed by a mile. Maybe I'm weird :)...

I got a similar impression from ZMF with regard to being muffled. It was like you had a pillow or blanket over your head was the best way I could describe it. This isn't true for all ZMF though. The Caldera I found didn't suffer from this and was terrific sounding to me. Definitely ZMFs finest...

This is kinda what I was expecting. I'm still waiting for a chance to try the Stellia again. I'm curious about how much is a "little" here. I think these are going to be good headphones to compare and contrast with one another. I suspect it will come down to preference and I would definitely...

Yea, it's pretty transparent. It's a fine DAC. I'm using it daily. An amp will change the sound more than a DAC by a mile. This particular DAC compared to others in the same range fits just fine. It's another good DAC from Schiit...but it's nothing magical. I did get a chance to listen to the...

Have you tried a Fostex with the Lawton cups? It provides a spacious sound and good isolation, but may get too dynamic too. It's definitely not as in your face as Focal though. Or possibly one of the Fostex modded headphones.

Very dynamic. They have a "house sound" for sure. It's pretty distinct...to the point you'd probably be able to tell you were listening to one blindfolded and it wouldn't matter which Focal you were listening to. Not saying that's bad. I like it. Sometimes can get fatiguing because of the...

The Closed-Back Headphone Thread (Plus Comparisons & Reviews)

At this point, trying so many, I think I've decided on not spending more than $1500 or so...but I also think the $1000 mark is ideal for headphones (or less of course, if you find a good pair you like). I think over $1,000 or $1,200 you get into diminishing returns. So if you do want to chase...

They don't sound similar. I really thought I'd like the VC closed a lot due to all the reviews, but when I listened to it I didn't really care for it. Good for me, I can avoid spending so much on them 😂 I wouldn't compare the XTC to the VC closed at all. It's more in the direction of the Focal...

Yup. I'm curious if it'll end up exploding or having a cult following. I'm a fan of the XTC though. I just recently picked up a Woo Audio WA6 tube amp to use with it and it's been a good match so far. I want to be careful not to overhype them. You can end up with different results depending on...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to compare many closed back headphones at the meetup I went to today. There were some ZMF, but no Verite Closed. I didn't miss an opportunity to listen to ZMF again and love them, but comparing open back isn't apples to apples obviously. Didn't see a Denon 9200...

Yea, I want to compare the D9200 and TH900 to the XTC when I get a chance. From memory, the XTC is basically in this group. Listening to the XTC and describing how it sounds, it just brings something new and I'm reminded of or think about the D9200, TH900, Stellia, ZMF VC, and some others. I...
