ES-R10 closed back dynamic headphone Sony R10 Replica Discussion/Impressions

Number 68 here. I came from the ES-1a e-stat headphones. Just wanna say the ES R10s are overall a great pair of headphones. It's definitely different from the estat sound I'm used to. Build quality is not perfect but definitely not terrible either. It feels comfortable to me even after...

ES Labs ES1a (homage to the Stax SR Omega)

Thanks! It's significantly heavier than the 007, but it doesn't feel uncomfortable to wear due to the wide headband. The clamping force isn't as strong. I usually remain seated at my desk when I listen to music through headphones, but if I were to bend down, then yes, the clamping force isn't...

ES Labs ES1a (homage to the Stax SR Omega)

I've been using the ES-1a almost daily for about 4 months now. I feel that these are underrated and the audiophile community deserves to know them. Before I start my review, I just wanna declare that I have no conflict of interest with anybody in the headphone industry. I bought the ES-1a at...

Some VERY interesting Chinese DIY Electrostats

The socket is a Weipu WS20 6 pin, available on Amazon. Initially I unknowingly hooked up the original energizers to a DIY balanced CFA2, and the output transistor simply overheated and smoked. I was quite puzzled so I decided to take some simple measurements on the energizer transformer, and...

Some VERY interesting Chinese DIY Electrostats

As for the energizer, I have opened them up to see. It is essentially a SRD-7 - two set-up transformers with a 9v to 500v upconverter. The upconverter is a sealed blackbox, but it works to produce some small amount of charge for the stator bias. The transformers are likely to be output...

Some VERY interesting Chinese DIY Electrostats

Gosh I have these too. With all due respect sir, your impression of these babies' bass is just... wrong. Your impression sounds quite typical of a pair of cans that's underpowered and I suspect the energizer is the culprit. These cans have some of the hardest hitting electrostatic bass I've ever...

it sounds less focus and intimate compared to the leonidas. The soundstage is wider too.

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

OH MAN I gotta say I'm a little touched and pleasantly surprised. My post was pretty casual so I didn't expect such a nuanced and formal response from a reviewer. It's a pity that I can't spend as much time and attention on audio as I'd like, but I do love it when my input here contributes to...

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

Yep, I tried the Nemesis, but for a shorter amount of time than I tried the LegendX, so I didn't want to say much about my impressions here. If I remember correctly, Nemesis had a more mid-focused sound, but with somewhat lean body. It sounds quite different from the Vantage as Vantage has a...

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

About the cross-over: It's really just a guess, so just take me with a pinch of salt. I've once seen a tragic, completely broken Spartan, and there's no resistors and caps inside. So I used a bit of imagination and made an extrapolation for the Zeus. Also I've peered into my transparent-shelled...

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

3-time Zeus owner here. Just tried the entire new line-ups from EE this afternoon. Here's my two cents. 1) most noticeable improvement of the new IEMs is the build quality. These new shells are thick. Despite having black, barely translucent shells, the new line-up feels much sturdier compared...

No prob man! I'm glad that you've found your IEM! Now just sit back, relax and enjoy!

Noble Django, A6, JH 13v2 pro...or somthing else?

I see. Vega is the most bassy flagship IEM. It is described as L shaped for having such a strong yet tight bass response when properly driven. I doubt any CIEM even come close in terms of bass output. You might like the sound of UM martian, a hybrid with a dynamic bass driver. Or you might wanna...

Yeah, but they don't seem to fit me too well. I prefer to wear them with the wire down.

Ahh I see. I had the SE846 too and I digged the white filter. I changed to K10 and found it to be a good upgrade, although the lower mids is much thinner than the 846. Or rather, 846 has a slightly muddy transition from bass to mids. You might not get used to the even brighter Encore. You might...

Noble Django, A6, JH 13v2 pro...or somthing else?

Actually the IEMs you've mentioned here all have a strong mids. Especially the Encore, it is retuned from the renowned Kaiser 10 just to improve its mid range performance. Are you sure you would enjoy a V shaped tuning with a backwardly-positioned vocal? It seems to be a far cry from what you...

I understand your pain of not being able to use universals, a few of my friends have that issue too. ME1 DOES have a ciem option. Perhaps you can check with their customer service. However ME1's is definitely leaner than Vega's. I have heard Vega, and it sounds pretty different with different...

If you mean a V-shaped tuning with a hollowed-out mid range, you can try the new version of JH16. Its mids is rather recessed iirc.

Noble Django, A6, JH 13v2 pro...or somthing else?

I see what you're looking for - it's the bass texture not quantity that matters to you. A BA IEM can have a copious amount of bass, that's just the tuning, usually by stacking multiple BA units and use sound filters to remove the mids and highs to dedicate the units for bass. Unfortunately...

64audio A8 is pretty warm and with a strong bass impact although it's slightly more expensive than Django and A6 (by $100 and $200 respectively). Empire Ears Athena (non-Adel) is also pretty warm, but it is leaner and brighter. Best is if you could find time to try the various options out.

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

The double DD bass hybrid is definitely something new! Looking forward to try it out. Also, I wonder how bass-lite Phantom is to be regarded as less bassy than the Zeus? I thought that's as little as it could get LOL

    Oriolus Hybrid IEM

I tried the mellianus in Shanghai a couple of weeks back. I also tried HifiMan's RE2000 but I preferred the mellianus. Here's my very brief impression, done using the stock cable and AK240. Bass: Despite being full-BA, the bass hits down low and hard and is quicker than a dynamic driver. Mids...

Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

There is actually a method my friend uses to temporarily remove the effect of adel on my Zeus XRA. He has the carrot module, but both he and I agree that the carrot module does not restore the full, focused sound of Zeus XR, so he devised this method. I'm pretty sure that it's effective and...
