Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

If you’re thinking of this mostly for for the 2-channel market, you need a motorized pot. I vote for a completely passive, with motorized pot, but make it a really good pot. The goal should be to give folks a way to add the most transparent and simple volume control to your balanced DACs. Want...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Previous Freya did this as well. Basically all inputs will create sound from all outputs, in all modes. But only certain modes convert SE to Balanced. Passive doesn’t - this is very clear in the manual. Although I don’t recall seeing the explanation of exactly whats done with the SE signal, you...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

Doing this, I think you will get a decent feel for it, but going from Mimby up to Yggy is quite a leap. For me, I bought a used Gumby. That gets you a lot of the way to Yggy. Once I heard Gumby, I knew I needed to hear Yggy, which I eventually did, and now I own. If I had started with Mimby, I...

You know, I had considered the Altair at a certain point but thought it had no digital outputs, so passed it by. Shows you what marketing can screw up sometimes ;-)

I think you’re still incorrect about USB output too - can’t do it on either sorry. Edit: I’m wrong. Although it says on Auralic’s site it has no digital outputs, right after that it says you can use USB output to a DAC. Nice one Auralic :frowning2: In that case, I recommend the highest quality...

The Altair I don’t believe has any digital outputs does it? If it doesn’t, then you have no choice anyway, otherwise you can’t use Yggy  The Aries Mini I believe only has Coax and Toslink out, so you won’t be able to use the USB input from Yggy with that either. You could use the Coaxial...

I know we’re taking about Schiit here, but I think you mean damping factor. :dt880smile: Which is based on the output impedance That spec hasn’t been published yet for Aegir. I’m curious about it as well.

That’s good to know, I wasn’t aware of that, thanks! The current OS is run on an SD card with the 200/ultra which should make even complete OS updates easy - not sure if the 100 had that or if it was added with the 200.

My personal recco for a “lower” priced USB streamer/end-point in Europe would be this one (not necessarily from this store): https://www.eliteaudiouk.com/product-page/sotm-sms-200 It’s not as cheap as the Audiophonics, but I’m willing to bet it sounds better. And the interface for...

What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

Well I’ve not heard the unit so I’m not going to defend it specifically, but I think that’s a false argument and a trap that I’m sure many fall into. Most of the stuff out there uses cheap off the shelf boards and chips and are nothing special from a parts point of view - they just don’t happen...

A good endpoint with USB out will also sound better than going direct from a PC/NUC running Roon ROCK or CORE. I have tried this with my NUC compared to a Sonore Microrendu and a SOTM SMS-200Ultra as well and I prefer both of these endpoints feeding Gen 5 USB on my previous Gumby and now Yggy...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

The USB output on the transport goes directly into the new Unison USB input that will be available on all their DACs and will sound better than S/PDIF or AES according to Mike. There is no computer in the middle, unless you don’t mean a computer in the literal sense. The proof will be in the...

Glad to hear it! Love my 2 channel Schiit as well. Can you hear the hum from your listening position (assuming you don’t sit right above/next to the amp?) Jason generally says if you can’t hear it from a normal listening position, then the hum is likely within normal levels.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Hum from the amp is sometimes due to DC offset on your lines, not necessarily from loose transformer. Also, Schiit can’t “fix” Fedex or whoever tossing your amp around and loosening/damaging it. I would fill out this form for specific help/advice: https://www.schiit.com/contact/help-support

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

While I would never personally classify Gumby1 as “syrupy”, laid back I would agree with. It was a pleasure machine, slightly warm and a touch rolled off in the highs and sweet through the mids yes. The current generation Gumby is more energetic with lower noise floor and punchier dynamics. It...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Many people have said the latest Gumby with B serial number (unofficial A2?) sounds much closer to the Yggy1. Where as the Yggy A2 is more similar to Gumby A1. I can attest to at least that 2nd part having owned the original Gumby, a B-serial Gumby, and a Yggy A2 at the same time. Yggy A2 was...

Hi Mike (@Baldr), since the new CD transport is intended to ideally use the new Unison USB on the Schiit DACs, this is going to tie up the only USB input on the DAC. Are you planning to add a USB input on the CD transport as well that can be switched in/out (ideally via the remote) so that...

Jason as others have already asked, the question of “is Aegir right for me?” is obviously going to be a common question for many. I assume you plan to address this in the FAQ, or maybe right on the main page, for the product when it’s launched? Realizing it may not be a straight black and white...
