Monoprice Monolith M1060 and M560 Planar Headphones

If that is the case, I would get a pair from Amazon with ability to return, if demoing is not an option.

Depends on how much you value your music. For me, they are easily worth 700+

    FX-Audio DAC-X6 2016 Release; potential sub-$100 king?

The DAC itself is quite good. Transparent with more than enough detail for the price. Line out to Atrox V2 class A amp sounds fantastic - powerful and rhythmic. The amp isn't super detailed or very wide, but it does the job. It has enough power to drive the HD650s to a solid listening level...

Sounds interesting. Tighter bass and expanded soundstage - can't complain if a cable upgrade can do that. Any idea where to get the cable only, if one doesn't own a nightowl?

Nice impressions. Just the way I felt after the first week of owning a pair.

Monoprice Monolith M1060 and M560 Planar Headphones

============================================================================== Totally agree with the assessment. M1060 is just bigger and fuller sounding than HE400i. On the other hand, the vocals are really sweet sounding in HE400i and I think it is a tad faster in low/sub bass reproduction...

It is, sorta, compared to the Odac, at least. I haven't heard the modi 2 AK4490, but assuming that my Chifi DYI AK4490 sounds similar, I'd say Mimby may be slightly punchier with a tad more oomph at the bottom end. But I'm really splitting hair here. Fiio Q1's dac is darker, quite noticeably...

DACs (decent transparent ones - as in all of the modern day DACs over $50) may count for 0.0001% - 2.0 % of improvement/change in sound, at best. To get to that 2%, we are talking industry leading four/five figure DACs. Good and clean power is much more important, if you ask me. So, what amp...

Any FIIO portable dac should do. I find my Q1 a bit smoother (less detailed) using the line out to Magni 2 than the Mimby and a DYI AK4490EQ, hence less harsh. I think a warmer amp can do a better job taming the highs on high volume levels.

    Atrox V2

It is not dark at all. I'd say, quite flat. Since it doesn't sweat powering the higher impedance lower frequencies of dynamic drivers, the bottom end sounds full bodied on so called bass-lite cans like K702, which may give the illusion of being 'dark'. I find the high ends just as extended on...

As long as the mods are reversible and not 'breaking' any seals, it should be okay.

m560. I haven't heard the M560 personally with this mod, but seems like an interesting thing to try: https://www.head-fi.org/f/threads/monoprice-monolith-m1060-and-m560-planar-headphones.820107/page-26

Couple with a higher power (better components) amp for punchier and tighter bass/sub-bass. The M1060s take EQ pretty well, so Real Bass Exicter DSP can be handy if you use Foobar2k.

    FX-Audio DAC-X6 initial impressions

Kinda baffled at your predicament. I have no issues driving T1 and DT880 600ohm, let alone HD650 or current hungry HE400i with this. I did upgrade to a 12V 6A power brick, but the included 12V1A did just fine at listenable volumes. Listening to well recorded symphony on the T1 much past 1...

The so called 5K ringing may be more dependent on the shape of individual ears and how sound reflects off them than how the stock pad actually sound. For the love of everything good, I tried hard for many hours to listen for it, but couldn't hear a thing. May it is just me and and a good 80% -...

Got the second generation m1060 in mail today. Straight out of the box, without any burn in, listened to it for several hours (modi multibit + magni 2) and gotta say, I am more than impressed. Not at the price/performance factor, but plain old performance. I haven't ever heard Stax SR-009...

Nobsound NS-08E also know as Nobsound 6J9 hybrid tube amp

I've been using this little beast for little over a month now to drive T1.2, HD650, HE400i, K702 etc. Gotta say, after getting a $15 6V3A (dialed in) wall wart and getting rid of the annoying power noise that used to creep in after the amp has been left on for more than an hour, this is my all...

Discerning Bass-Head can't decide which sub-$300 closed full-size / IEM 'phones to get.

Senn HD380s are very neutral and not too hard to drive. They pack quite a bit of sub bass - not bloated or boomy. Fiio's bass boost can warm up the mid bass with those.

    Are $100+ headphones worth it?

If you are getting a refurb HE 400i from Hifiman directly for $229, upgrading to Ortho is definitely worth it. Else, a sub $100 NVX XPT100, Takstar Pro80 or sub $50 Superlux HD668B/681Evo are more than enough. Make sure you are using a decent dac/amp. FIIO Q1/E12l/E17/E18 should be enough (E10k...

Just get a FIIO Q1 and a refurb Hifiman HE 400i. Less than $350 and you'll be in heaven. If you need a more powerful amp, get a Nobsound NS-08E tube amp for $40 and feed it from the Q1 dac line out.

50% Off Skullcandy... Worth It Yet?

Regardless of what price you are paying, if you are looking to listen to decent headphones, don't buy ANY skullcandies. If you wanna sell on eBay, that is another story all together, for the price you quoted. I'd much rather get NVX XPT100 (Brainwavz HM5) or Kingston Hyper-X (Takstar Pro 80)...

    New Member Introductions thread

Do you think HE 400 and HE 400i are different enough to own together. I find the HE-400i a bit recessed in mid/low bass and missing the hits. With HE400 refurbs selling for $200 at the Hifiman store, was contemplating getting them. Whats your thought?
