I don't know for what damn reason, some cables overheat the amplifier. Maybe it's their composition or an impedance play, but it depends largely on the cable you use for the headphones, which can also cause other problems

Imho and in my experience, it's not the external temp or other to determine the overheating...it's the headphone cable...

It depends on headphone impedance too...however 65-66 imho. The same as you describe is the same that I have with input/output, volume 44 with lcd xc and he1000se. With/without connection, 0 or 64 volume, the same...
