Portable Amp / DAC Shootout: iFi Micro iDSD vs Resonessence Concero HP vs Chord Mojo vs iFi iDAC2 vs HRT Microstreamer

Interesting review, especially because i'm torn between getting an iDSD2 (blacklabel) or IDAC2. What is however interesting is that some of the comparisons you made seem to be exactly opposite to the findings of other people (including iFi/AMR engineers) so that makes it pretty complicated and...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

That's the impression I got from reading about it, however it's not the experience I had when trying it. Makes me wonder if it's maybe a bad match with my preamp, although that doesn't seem very likely either. Or maybe I got a bad unit? But it doesn't sound *bad* in any specific area, it's...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

Am I the only one who finds the Pono to sound sub-par for a hifi component? When connected to my hifi system, the Pono sounds lackluster, veiled and low in dynamics when compared to my HRT MusicStreamer Pro (which is a good DAC, but shouldn't be out of Pono's league as much as it appears to...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

A CEO resigning prior to the product launch is unlikely to be a good thing. A musician taking his place is even less of a good thing. As is typical for Pono, the backers of the project are not being kept informed, let alone involved. I wonder what the conflict was about that made the CEO step...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

I think the main thing that keeps me from biting is the delivery time. 9 months is a lot of time to have other devices appear and to maybe regret buying it before you even have it. But I'll definitely keep an eye on it and perhaps buy it later, if it turns out to really be a great device. Even...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

LOL. Yes you are a special and unique snowflake indeed! And so far you're doing a great job at not telling anyone about it! :D Now please cooperate as we gently escort you to the white van.

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

Perhaps, but is that the point? If the result is better masters of my favorite music being available, then I don't really care if the artists endorsed it because they are enthusiastic about how it sounds or because they can sell more albums that way. Although I think the artists involved are...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

I see a lot of criticism (not just here) about this device being 'too expensive', and I have a hard time seeing what thats based on. Compared to what exactly, is 300$ expensive for a 128gb DAP that plays hires music and comes with a top of the line DAC and (supposedly) quality audio components...

Best sound card ever for Music and Movies?

As an alternative to soundcards, a good asynchronous USB dac will wipe the floor with just about any internal soundcard when it comes to SQ. So unless you need the extra options that a soundcard gives I'd take that into consideration.

Should I buy M2Tech Hiface 2+ Related Questions

I think the Hiface will definately give a better SPDIF signal than an internal or onboard soundcard will, mostly due to less jitter and probably less interference aswell. It being asynchronous should prevent the extra jitter caused by using the PC as the clock.

what else should i get for my first audiophile set up?

Since you are posting this in Source forum I would say a good DAC is essential. Working asynchronous from the PC clock if at all possible. However for 100$ you won't find much of anything that qualifies as audiophile kit. Maybe get lucky on ebay.

Confused!!! What Comply tips are best for the IE8?

After not being able to get a proper fit/seal with the default tips I ordered bothcomply tx500 and sony hybrids. Both fit and seal, which makes me wonder why sennheiser couldnt get this right.. Comply is most comfortnable and by far the best solation. Bass gets maybe too big with them, eq'ing...

The simplest yet most amazing tip for IE8 owners (updated)(slow for 56k)

Thanks for this thread!   The backwards bi-semi-flange-mushroom-thingy with a single flange silicone covering over it gives me the best seal Ive had with the IE8. Stock tips that came with it gave me a lot of frustration: I couldnt get a full seal with any of them, the only ones that came...

new or fake AKG K518 DJ?

I doubt faking budget-phones leaves an interesting enough margin to take the trouble it takes to fake them. How do they sound?

    K518LE impressions

I have a K518DJ since a few years but I cant listen to them. Sure it packs a punch but its the most bass-bloated headphone I've used. Extremely warm and the bass drowns out any details, if they were there to begin with. I like a good bass but having heard these phones made me worried to buy...

WARNING: Fake IE8s! Comparison pictures included!!

Thanks for this thread and the excellent pics/descriptions!   I just got mine in the mail and this helped make me sure it's the real deal. I did buy from a trusted audio/dj shop and for a reasonable price, but still, the idea that theres very convincing fakes out there made my slightly...

The Sennheiser HD 800: The First Listen, The First Review

Yikes thats a pretty ugly set of headphones.. can't wait to hear them, but yikes.. good thing theyre for home use mostly. I had hoped for something more esthetically pleasing for something so high end though, but maybe thats a matter of taste. But if they sound as good as its hyped up to be then...

Getting clean output from USB soundcard and/or laptop: my experiences

Just set output to whatever your source material is. So for music that came from CD, yeah 16bit 44k1. Resampling is only useful if the DAC has to resample it to 48khz orso (emu wont have to) and/or the soundcard has such lousy conversion that you want to do it with software (not the case either)

Getting clean output from USB soundcard and/or laptop: my experiences

Strange. Are you sure your tape covering didnt shield off too much or made the connector go in such a way it fails to make another contact point? It was a bit messing around for me, have to use pretty thin tape or the usb cable fit will be too tight. You should also be able to do it on the...

Getting clean output from USB soundcard and/or laptop: my experiences

The ground pin is the one on the bottom left, on the EMU's end of the usb cable. the other contact point is just the metal/gold outside of the usb plug. I used 'painter's tape' to cover them both. You could cut the black wire to achieve the same but cutting open usb2 cables is not such a great...

    iRiver e100

One other problem with the e100 i noticed in the short time i had it - the display is pretty much impossible to read outdoors even out of the full sun and on brightest settings. For me that was pretty annoying because i use it biking and walking a lot. On the plus though, navigation menus...

    iRiver e100

I have returned the iriver e100 i bought last week. I tried to like it but i just couldnt get used to the mediocre soundquality and lousy musiclibrary management (having to sort everything manually, re-tag, etc). I ended up getting a Trekstor Vibez instead. Trekstor hired the Rio team for...

    iRiver e100

I bought an iriver e100 recently, let me share my first impressions It costed 79€ for the 4gig version. It can be upgraded with MicroSD memory. The amount of features for that very modest price is impressive: - The player supports mp3, wma, ogg (yay), flac (yay), asf. - It has a builtin...

    Hotrodding the X-Fi: A Layman's Guide (No 56k)

try em both if you can though swapping opamps too often increases risk of problems ofcourse. You can also use both if youre mostly after 2 channel sound and have a 7.1 cable, thats what i did. It comes out a stereo plug for both of them after that cable. Then with the mixer panel you can route...
