No, the hiss is due to the fact that the e5 is one of the most sensitive phones out there and hiss can be heard with many sources, much less an airplane jack. A level attenuator (er4p- er4s converter, or Shure's) solves the hiss problem. Plus the volume level might blow your hearing if not...

More props for getting from a shelter. I volunteeered at one for quite a while (gonna go to vet school soon) and it was quite sobering to see the number of animals that need homes.
