After buying a M9XX and HE400i you're really trying to get me to spend another $400 aren't you?

Can you compare to any of the Audeze lineup? I have heard them all and own the LCD2.2 and love them for the body/weight/authority that they uniquely provide in their signature. If the TH-X00 is in that catagory/quality that it can spar with the TOTL HP Audeze family (2 and up), I'm in.
 - Could it replace my LCD2.2 and be more comfortable?
 - Does it scale like a TOTL or is it stuck in the middle weight range?

@ezekiel77 - there's only one reason in my book why you shouldn't purchase it, and that is if you do not have the funds available to purchase it.  I believe in positivity, though, so where there is a will, there is a way.

@Katji - it truly is remarkable what Massdrop is offering with regards to international shipping.

@fjrabon - Just looking out for you.

@Barra - I purposefully didn't name specific TOTL headphones when comparing to the TH-X00 with regards to sound quality, but as expressed above, from the free airline headphones to the original Orpheus, the TH-X00 is one special sounding headphone.  The TH-X00 is a different sound from any of the Audeze lineup.  With that said, from my memory of listening to the entire lineup multiple times, notes and write-ups in the QP1R review, I would say the TH-X00 is probably the closest to the versatile LCD-2 and warmth of LCD-3, with a dash of LCD-X style and bravado.  The TH-X00 is still a different sound, though, more enveloping, especially because of the semi-closed back construction.  Soundstage is still better than adequate compared to most headphones even 5 times the TH-X00's price.  Even then, the source used with the TH-X00 could change my assertion immensely.

The TH-X00, if you like the pairing with your specific source and love the signature, I can say it will be easy to believe it can not only spar with the TOTL HP Audeze family, but you may prefer the signature of the TH-X00 - especially if you love enthralling, quality bass.  The quality of the TH-X00 is the same stellar Fostex quality that you know and love if you've listened to them before.  I will say that the earpads aren't very difficult to remove though.  I would like to try the TH-X00 with the Alpha pads, even though I don't have major issues with the included super soft earpads.

Everything I've thrown at it DAC/amp and DAP-wise, the TH-X00 has been able to sort of meld itself into the sound signature the sources deliver, with ease.  From the iPhone 6 to the m9XX, the TH-X00 sounds different on both, but both present their own qualities that should cater to most anyone in the market for a headphone with the traits that I discussed in the review.

It's all relative - some may not like the TH-X00 at all if they like a more neutral and flat sound signature.  In my opinion, the TH-X00 is worthy of being an almost undefeated UFC fighter - lots of wins, and maybe one loss due to the bundled cable.  He or she wins back the UFC title by defeating the opponent with replacing the cable with a third party cable that they like the most.

Good for symphony and piano if you know how loud the piano should sounds like and go deep and high. I still skeptic your score on quality was perfect 10?

@piaudio - Since there are more than one review of this product, the scores are averages - it would be nice if it showed possibly both: the average score and the reviewers individual score.  That said, my individual score on Audio Quality is the farthest it can go to the right.  It's what I feel it sounds relative to other headphones that I listened to - there is no way that you can be skeptical with regards to my rating since it's my opinion.  You may listen to the TH-X00 and love it, great.  You may listen to it and not like it, and that's quite alright.

Awesomely thorough review, Moe!
I know you and I trust your ears, so I will definitely be buying a pair (either this drop or the next).
I've been looking for a high-quality but reasonably affordable full-size closed-back headphone, and these look like the best thing going in Head-Fi-Land!
Great work and thanks again for all the detailed info.

@moedawg140 Sorry, I was not questioning on your score but if this cans could excel for piano and large orchestra on part or better than Beyerdynamic T1 and others cans?

@XERO1 - Thanks for the comment, Chris.  You've got one of the snazziest Omega headphone stands available - I always think about them when you are around!  If you don't wind put purchasing the TH-X00 this drop, we can meet up and you can listen to mine - I'd like to listen to your favorite headphones as well!  Based on your description of what type of headphone you'd like, I think the TH-X00 is calling out for you!  I'll be adding a third party cable, possible detachable connector pictures, and explanation once that is taken care of in the near future.

@piaudio - No worries.  As of this writing, I haven't listened to the T1, but I have listened to the T1 2.generation.  Based on my memory (albeit a while since I last heard it), notes and write-up in the QP1R review, I would say the TH-X00 performs very well compared to the T1 2.generation with regards to piano, large orchestra, and other areas of musical presentation.  The TH-X00 isn't as slow and syrupy sounding as the T1 2.generation when paired with the QP1R, and compared to other headphones, it varies based on the inherent abilities of the compared headphones and the sources paired with said headphones as well.

dude awesome review - I will pick these up next time - but please please please please do not say things like "there may never be a headphone again that emits a sound that the TH-X00 does, that may be worth multiple times the amount they are being sold for.  For $500 I would not bat an eye. $1,000 even" - sound is subjective and hence value of a object that produces sound is also subjective. I just thinking stating things like above will make the manufacture raise the price. For example I bought Philips 9500 for 56$ brand new - ppl kept saying how good they sounded and they competed with headphones well above the 150$ price range, and now those headphones have a fudged up pricing.

@Haris Javed X00 will definitely jack up its price, the inventors know their products best and may have initially selling at introductory price.

Any significant changes with X00 burn-in?

@Haris Javed - Thanks for your comments. :)

@piaudio - Not too sure because I burned them in as soon as I received them.  They sounded great from my limited initial listen, and sounds great hundreds of hours later.  I'm going to be much more interested in how much the sound will change once my modifications are implemented.  I will update the review when everything is finished.

I just joined the second Massdrop of the TH-X00.  These cans are selling fast.  2 1/2 days and this second batch of 1000 units are sold!  The only downside is that there's about a 90 day lag till delivery.  May the time pass swiftly. . .  Looking forward to comparing them with the Philips X2 and JVC FX850 woodies.

Congratulations, @Stratos24!  I've been watching the drops, and they are literally selling like hotcakes (which reminds me, the Red Velvet Hotcakes at Henderson, Nevada's Craft Kitchen was scrumptious yesterday - make sure to go if you are visiting or live around the Las Vegas area).  Not sure where you live, but if you or anyone is available in the Southern California area, I'll bring my TH-X00 and a few other awesome-sounding products to The Source A/V event, in Torrance, CA at 12 - 5pm tomorrow.  It will be the Sennheiser HE 1060 Orpheus II's first California showing, and there will be a raffle where there will be a winner of the Questyle Audio QP1 and Westone W40!

Hope to see everyone who can make it, there!

I am interested in the DHC Nucleotide V3 24awg stranded OCC cable mod you did. Did you find any sonic benefit to the new cable or is it similar to the stock cable in sound quality?
moedawg140
moedawg140
@husafreak (sorry, I'm on my iPhone so I can't highlight your name/mention you absolutely correctly, so hopefully you'll see this message sooner than later) - I would say from memory the sound is closer to the original than not. The main issue with sharing this type of comparison is that it is impossible for me to A/B mine back to back since I changed out the wiring and can't immediately compare with the DHC wiring and stock wiring. Even if I listened A/B with my modded and another stock TH-X00, I will not have a true comparison because even the same headphone model but different Mahogany earcups will have a high chance of sounding different, based on my listening experiences with same model headphones sounding slightly to pretty different to my ears.
