Great review ... as I am recently impressed by the versatility of the little Go Blu with the IE 900, it makes me wonder if I shouldn't try such a portable way (Gryphon) with some of my more juice demanding IEMs (like Vision Ears EXT or even IER-Z1R).
Actually, I am on more fixed on the FIIO M17 with 2x3W as I still expect to travel with some closed headphones, but, your story with this rather powerful BT DAC AMP with my smartphone, could be a way to go too, assuming there is a 15 to 20 hours battery life ?.

man, I like that IFI put some high quality interconnects with this kit. Most manufacturers don't even give you decent ones to begin with, for the price. And the more and more, I see reviews of the Gryphon, I become more and more intrigued and wanna pull the trigger.

What software do you use on your smartphone and what is the source for hi-res music?

@newworld666 - sadly battery life is only around 8-10 hours, so you'll need to recharge daily with heavy use.

@RONJA MESCO - the 4.4mm interconnect is sold separately (it's quite expensive actually, but well worth it).

@thetest10 - I use UAPP on my smartphone and DAP. Hi-res music from a variety of sources (I have a 4TB+ music server at home).

Wow, excellent review.
I recently bought xCan and your review just influenced me to sell it and buy Gryphon .

Yes Gryphon makes much more sense than xCan, considering it has xCan built in. Enjoy.

iFi’s xDSD Gryphon (or just Gryphon if you’ll allow me)...

in a review of that length and detail; “sure, why not”?

Kudos (respect given)

examples of where this is becomes a ‘review’ and not just a product release (ad) is stuff like:

“Starting with the most visible of these, the volume dial, not so much a dial as a multi-function knob, acts as an on/off power switch, menu selector (when inside the settings menu), and most importantly as an analogue volume control. Did I mention it can also be used to mute the volume (single press) and, with the latest firmware, gives you full pause/forward/reverse track control when connected with Bluetooth?”

based on your text I am learning actual usability of the unit; this is ‘meat and potatoes stuff’, “thankyou”

In fact as reviews go; this one is ‘quality’, for eg:

It also means that XBass II is more than just about bass, because it can boost upper midrange independently of bass, a potentially useful feature for IEMs or headphones that dip the presence region but don’t need any bass correction.

where covering the full extent of the ‘bullet point’ features is determinedly applied to real world usage..

Not trying to review your review; just wanting to establish to any ‘skimmers’ that this article goes a long way to ‘one stop shop’...

:) Cheers

@iFi (not really!) ‘silentLine’? (keeping the power fluctuations associated with screen electronics free from the audio circuit? (yes please!)
gLer I really feel you understand where hardware fits in the market and what users dollars will scale towards. This sort of review is as useful to techheads as it is to casuals, and congratulations are due for bridging these social crowds together- giving something (practical) for everyone. (succinctly even!). You are a source of usefulness (rather than noise). This review HELPS headfi. Outstanding!
You really get the ‘realworld’ product useability out in the open.. and those photos are terrific too. (thanks again)

Hi gLer,
I already posted this in xCan thread but got no response until now.
Is the xBass II on Gryphon less in quantity compared to Go Blu's xBass? Cause the xBass II on xCan is too much of bass boost for my taste. My headphones are HD6XX and LCD 2 Classic.

@dsrk I find it to be a subtle sub bass boost on Gryphon, do I wouldn't call it excessive, especially with something like a 6XX that in my opinion can do with more bass (not so much LCD-2 though). The great thing with XBass II is that it's multifunctional: you can set it to bass only, upper mids only, or bass + upper mids, using the switch on the back. Very versatile indeed, especially when combined with XSpace for headphones that need it.
