So...a full-sized Etymotic ER4S/4P with large 3d sound stage? At 199$?

This could be my dream headphones at ANY price!

I'm abou to go to Japan in a few days, may as well grab these while I'm at it.

Great review!

These look very interesting... the earpad opening looks pretty snug to me though. Does it give enough space without having to squeeze one's (normal size) ears through?

how does it compare to the mt 220's, dt 150?

I have never heard the dt 150. The yamaha has a more enjoyable signature but will provide less insight and monitoring ability. I find the yamaha bass to be more to my liking despite it not being as tight as the pioneer. The pioneer has a clearer sound and is less splashy in the highs although it is probably brighter than the yamaha.

Tried these. Good sound and fit in every way, just too much treble for me.

I will compare it soon to the akg k553 which is a nother budget king.

I'm having trouble finding details about how the detachable cords connect to the headphones, and I haven't seen a picture of the jack in the cans.  Would you be able to take a pic or two so we can get a better idea of what options there would be for aftermarket cables?

I'm interested in getting a pair of these to use both in-home and out-and-about (I don't mind large headphones for portable use, so long as the cable doesn't become a nuisance).  Any thoughts on shorter, non-coiled cables and portable use in general?  Sounds like these isolate really well and aren't too heavy.

Tried the K553. Very clear but not harsh. Fantastic mids. Not "open sounding" but not boxy.
Better bass than most of AKG, but not quite enough without pushing them against my ears.
Probably the best lower cost truly "balanced" and "not hyped" closed headphone I'd heard.

@Mark Up I will have them soon enough to do a shoot out. I suspect the k553 to be more to my preferences. We will see I will post up dates.

@Gnafu the Great I will update the review with more info, however my pc is in the shop so I will just have to find pics online. basically it is a detachable 1/8 cable that twist locks into the left cup. Plenty of aftermarket cable options.

Are you sure it's 1/8" on the headphone end?  I saw a picture on Sweetwater that almost looks like it might be a 2.5mm connector in the can.  Not a dealbreaker, but I like to set my expectations appropriately :).

Thanks for the great review.  I hadn't even heard of these before, and now I'm pretty much convinced they're exactly what I've been looking for.

Somebody compare these to HD650's, they sound like twins to me

Twins???? Nooway they are wayy different even reading the review would say so. The hd650 holds a very special place in my heart and given the choice I would reach for the hd650. The 650 has a lot less treble, more bass in the mid bass, less bass extension, fuller mids, better vocals, more transparency because its open, less of a 3d sound but more open with less reverberations from cups.

How do HD650 compare to MT220 ? BTW, Very good review.

After more and more time with these I find my preference may lean towards the Yamaha. These have a more spacious and clear sound but it lacks body and weight in comparison. These have that monitor sound sig for headphones with hyped highs, flat mids, and lean bass. The Yamaha is the only monitor type headphone that has enjoyable bass way. These will sound less veiled in the middle kids than the Yamaha. Also I have the k553 here and the Soundstage is bigger on the pioneer. The bass is tighter, similar in quantity, and reaches deeper than the k553 but can sound just a hair leaner on some songs.
