What's the greatest set up you have owned so far??

Thought it might be fun to rave about the best rigs that we have owned so far. Obviously most of these will be our current set ups, but there may have been times when you have sold stuff in the past in a rash desicion to buy something you thought was gonna be better... And wasn't..    ...

How Tube (Valve) Amplifiers Work Webpage

I know many of you are like me and want to better understand how tube amplifiers work. I have created an easy to understand web page that details how every component in a tube amplifier works including how the rectifier, preamp and power tubes work. There's no math and I use a lot of graphics to...

Shocker: the new Bose AE2's are actually good.

Yeah I know. Bose sucks. No highs, no lows...that's Bose! (or however that stupid joke goes).    Anyway, I've owned Bose headphones in the past. Used to have the OE (they are terrible...ok sound but the bass is horrifyingly overwhelming). I also used to have the original AE's.    I've...

Currently Have Tung Sols in and have a set of Raytheons, and Jansens or whatever its called. Also is it okay to mix and match tubes? Like have 2 different types of tubes in...

    The Leben CS300XS Thread

I have been on the hunt for an out-of-production Leben CS300x since bringing home and falling in love with my standard CS300. A few days ago, while following my well-beaten path of audio ‘recycle’ shops in Osaka’s electronics district, I noticed a dusty Leben sitting on a shelf near the entrance...

Hum and other problems with "NOS" power tubes?

I bought some Tung-Sol 5998s (8 of them) from a dealer. They were sold as NOS, but I guess I've been ripped off.   Some are top getters, others bottom getters. Several of them have a hum, and one makes a cracking sound. My question is this: if a tube really is NOS, will it hum? Make cracking...

I got a 6v6 8802 magnavox tube amp, is it too powerful for headphones?

I got a 6v6gt 8802 magnavox tube amp, is it too powerful for headphones? Ive heard it puts out anywhere from 8-12 watts.   I have some denon ah-d 5000's that i would like to power with this amp. Will this work well with them or not?  Anyway I can modify it to restrict the max power?

    Tungsol 6SN7 GT equivalent?

Noob question here:   Can any current-production 6SN7 tubes run with the NOS champ?   Cheers,   Dave

    Tube Branding (or Re-Branding) Question

I recently ordered a RCA clear-top 12AU7 and four Tung-Sol 5687s from Tube Depot.   When they arrived, the "RCA" turned out to bear the "United Electron" logo, and the "Tung-Sols" bear the "Lewis & Kaufman" name and a "Los Gatos" logo.   Any chance that these are in fact what I thought I...

    tube help

Wondering if I can get some ideas for tube selection for my Audio Note P2SE amplifier. This is an 18 watt class A amp driving the K1000. It uses two 6SL7 (input tubes) and four 6L6/5881 output tubes. Currently I'm using with 6SL7: Tung-Sol 6SL7 GT 6L6: Philips ECG 6L6WGB   At one point...

    12AU7 comparison

Hi! I got a Tung-Sol Black Glass 12AU7 of ebay a few days ago and it sounds wonderful in my Cayin HA-1A amp (compared to the RCA cleartops I was using before). Very smooth and musical. Does anyone know how the Amperex Bugle Boys sound compared to them?

DIY Amp and DAC recommendations please!

Hello everyone!   As a general rule I like to DIY, not buy, my things. In my opinion this is almost always the best bang-for-your buck, especially if you enjoy building and tinkering as I do. I have built guitar effects pedals, a small guitar amp, and various other electronics, so I do have...

For 6AS7G tube rollers here .....

tried to put together some 6AS7G equivalents with notes (from my personal experience). of course, the usual brand/re-label disclaimers apply. So no need which one is better. The goal here is just to list the main equivalents that may work in your amp's circuit. Did I miss any equivalents...

    New Tung-sol 6v6's in my SQ88-V2 - VERY nice ! (with pic).

I've been waiting for a long time for the new tung-sol 6v6's to get here.   They were worth the wait!  Very nice tubes, detailed, fast, extended.   If you use a 6v6 I recommended them highly.   A step up from the JJ's I was using (and I like those a lot).

    Tung-Sol 6V6GT Vacuum Tube

Totally Tweed! The preferred OEM tube of '50s-era Fender Tweed Champ and Deluxe amplifiers. The Tungsol 6V6 has a geometry designed to safely handle the higher voltages used in guitar amps – plus heavier plate and grid materials. The result: better mids and bottom while keeping the smooth top of...
