The HeadAmp GS-X and GS-X MK2 Thread
May 14, 2024 at 7:19 AM Post #6,331 of 6,342
Hey everyone, it’s been a while since my last post. I’ve owned my GSX mk2 for approximately 11 years (serial number 14), and it has been my faithful companion for daily use without any issues—until now. Unfortunately, the medium gain setting is no longer balanced; the right channel is weaker than the left. Has anyone else encountered this issue, and is there a known fix?

Only on medium gain? Do you have scratching noise when changing volume?

i got rid of my gsx mk2 because of distortion coming from volume pot i guess. It became problematic and i found i wasn't getting proper volume or balance unless i infinitely adjusted the wheel. So went wa33 elite and wow, what a fantastic decision. the elite has upgraded brass enclosed volume wheel, so hopefully my woo will hold up longer. Now it did take 8 years for the gsx to go staticky.

Yes only on medium gain and yes the volume pot makes scratching noises when adjusting, more than likely because of dust build-up, should I try and clean this with electrical contact spray or would this be a bad idea?

You can give it a go, or this is the door opening to next level amping and a wallet drain

It should be safe, just make sure you use plastic friendly contact cleaner.

DACT has a pretty detailed instruction on how to clean it, they recommended a certain brand of contact cleaner but I just got something that is available locally (CRC QD, green bottle).

Lol hopefully my wallet doesn't have to make an appearance:anguished: I am still smitten with my gsx I don't want it to be the end just yet:nose:

if it's a DACT, sometimes they do need to be opened and cleaned especially after several years.

If the issue is with a specific gain level it's probably something else -- likely the gain switch itself or one of the relays. Would be very easy for us to fix

I have done a few tests and now I don't think it is the DACT or though it is scratchy and probably needs a clean. The medium gain issue with chl balance is only fixable by changing gain either to high or low and back to medium, turning the DACT doesn't fix the medium issue only moving the gain switch fixes it.

It's probably the solder joints on the gain switch
I will open it up in the next few days and see if I can visually see any joint problems around that area, also is there a contact cleaner you would recommend for cleaning the DACT? I have two in mind (Hosa Caig DeoxIT Contact Cleaner) and (CRC NF Contact Cleaner)
