"mod" in quotations because I am hesitant to call it that.
I've seen one too many friends buy beats or similar headphones with cables designed to go from earcup to source 3 feet from head over good cans like beyers and senns simply because they think that a 10 foot cable is an insurmountable obstacle.
Having seen many (often harmful/faulty) makeshift solutions (like stuffing a ball of tangled cable mess in lower pocket of cargo shorts), I decided to create (Or, rather, specify and write down what has been done many times before) a more optimized way to shorten a cable without any destructive or difficult alterations.
This cable is too long
Materials: Two cheap rubber bands
Instructions:
*Fold the cord in to a neat bundle as shown, approximately 7 inches in length, although this can vary depending on cable thickness.
Leave about 6 inches to 1 foot of non-bundled length between the bundle and the end of the cable, this is to allow the cable to be flexible around the connection point.
*take a rubber band and stretch it over the bundle, starting with the end that is closest to the headphones.
Leave lots of room between the rubber band and where the "bend" of the cable bundle is, pinching wires in a hairpin turn will damage them.
*turn rubber band 180 degrees, pull end over the termination of the cable and repeat until it starts getting harder to do. (you don't want it super tight!)
*repeat on side that is closer to the cable termination
This mod may seem like "sky is blue" to us Head-fiers, but many of the people that visit the site are just average folks who type something headphone related into Google. This thread could possibly help those who type in something like "How to shorten headphone cable".
