There's a very interesting issue some people are having on the 2CPU forums with Vista and audio playback. Apparently on many machines, while playing music, network performance drops by as much as 95% (!):

How bout poor music performance while networking?

A LOT of Dell users are having problems with the audio skipping and popping that has something to do with the wireless. Vista sucks. I'm going to back XP soon.

It took me 5 years before I'd loaded XP on my main home PC. It looks like I'm going to wait for another 4 years before I'd touch Vista.

I worked at Office Depot over the summer and gave as as many un-recommendations for Vista as I could spit out. I've had a terrible experience working with that OS so far. XP for me.

Just a followup to this... it has been confirmed as a real issue. More details and discussion here:

This truly has to be one of the worst intentional software designs of all time. To "optimize" media playback, they throttle network traffic by a fixed, hardcoded amount, even if the media itself is on the network. For instance, playing media on a home network share using gigabit Ethernet may cause network bandwidth to decrease by 85%. Not to mention that the very need for this kludge was introduced by a new heavyweight scheduler in Vista itself. Is it too much to expect a 3GHz dual-core machine to be able to play music without audible glitches without the need for weird kludges?
