OK, I recently started a thread about the poor recording quality associated with the new Dave Matthews Band album Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King. So far 100% of the feedback agrees with my rather primitive assessment. Well, my experience with this new Elvis Costello album is completely opposite. It is beautifully mastered by none other than T-Boone Burnett. He has won many awards for his expertise including O Brother Where Art Thou, as well as last year's Raising Sand with Alison Kraus and Robert Plant.

The Costello album is not "hot" at all. Instrument separation is excellent. Bass extends very low, is sharp, and very very tight. The cymbals on the drums are clean, clear, and crisp. No shrill highs here. Voices are excellent and come through loud and clear, again using the full range of musical sound. All this good stuff and as an added bonus the songs are actually GREAT, as well as the band Elvis has surrounded himself with. I highly recommend this album.

saying the sound is good may cut it for the audiophools, but is the album any good? costello is one of my favorite artists and some of his albums are very hit or miss. plus. he's got to be really friggin old by now, i havent liked any of the 'comeback' albums as of late...

He's still in his prime. If you don't believe that, take a look at his wife!

I've not heard this album yet, but find the analogy to Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" rather interesting. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertain...sugarcane.html

He doesn't need a "comeback." He never left!

I definitely agree with your evaluation of the new DMB disc and I also agree with your comments about the new Elvis Costello effort. The album is well mastered. I have also enjoyed the quality of the content. I have liked much of Elvis Costello's recent music. I am not an Elvis fanatic or really even a long term fan. I always liked "Watching The Detectives" and random songs here and there. I really started liking him with "The Delivery Man." I also really liked "River In Reverse" which he did with Allen Toussaint and Joe Henry as producer. Considering the positive reviews I was a little disappointed with "Momofuku." "Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane" reminds me a little bit of "The Delivery Man." I like it despite some bad reviews that I have read. As far as Elvis being old? It's all about the music, man!

I'm listening to it right now, though as it's on Rhapsody I can make only limited judgments about how it actually sounds.

It's a good album content-wise thus far (I'm 4 songs into it). There are parts of it that remind me a bit of Spike (which some folks didn't care for but I always liked) with a tiny bit of The River in Reverse thrown in for good measure. Some of his other stuff is like Almost Blue (the album, not the song).

I like...I think I'll go buy it this week.

Not too surprised about the new DMB album...none of their studio stuff has been mixed/produced worth a damn since Before these Crowded Streets. Now Dave's solo album...not so.

I've been listening to bits and pieces, but haven't picked up Secret, Profane & Sugarcane yet. If I can get to the store today (am headed to work shortly

) I'll grab a copy.

I see that he's touring quite a bit - out at the Agua Caliente Casino in July and at the Greek in August. I'll have to make it to at least one of those.

I saw him last year, warming up for the Police. It's worth seeing, for sure.
