Has anybody ever seen these HiFiMAN HE5 Full Size Headphones (Cans) before. I just saw them on the HEAD-DIRECT website and couldn't find them in Head-Fi's forums, so I thought I'd post pics in case they're actually "new"

They look good. Hey, I don't mind wood. (I'm a Victor JVC HP-FX500 Fan)

These look interesting, it appears they are designed to have detachable cables, which would be nice for the Head-Fi community, as we like our aftermarket mods...

Here ya go:

These are Head-Direct's new Planar (orthodynamic) headphones; there's been quite a bit of buzz on these. Most (if not all) impressions of them seem to be positive. I think they look amazing! If only I had the funds to get one of these.

Geez - must get a pair - orthos have a unique and very satisfying signature.

Check out the Can Jam @ RMAF impressions thread for more details on these - many of us heard them this past weekend and were very impressed, although pricing still seems to be in flux

Introductory price is $600.

I'm waiting for Fang's response to my question regarding the HE5's sensitivity, impedance, and possibly having the option for a 4 pin XLR termination as I hope that it can be driven by a speaker amp much like the K1000.

Thinking about ordering a pair, but I'd probably need to upgrade amps to run them properly....

Any idea of what is needed to drive these yet? I believe they are 30ohm, no word yet on sensitivity.

I don't know if the wa2 will do a very good job of powering these....

At $600, these are a steal, but in case you haven't read the RMAF stuff, if you're going to buy make sure to check with Fang before buying to make your amp will be up to the task (at the show, Larry/HeadphoneAddict found that even his ZDT couldn't drive them very effectively).

Thats what I'm afraid of, 600usd is a steal, but if I have to buy another amp, then, much less of a steal....

If the transformer coupled zdt has "trouble" driving them effectively, I'm guessing an otl design would fair much worse.

If the Phoenix can't drive them, what the hell can...wonder how my Phoenix would do. I'm pretty doubtful if any cans can dethrone my HD800s, but I am curious.

Have you tried the K1000? It's better than the HD800 for what I want, especially in terms of emotion.

Yeah, neither of the very powerful transformer-coupled tube amps we tried with these in Denver worked. OTL is almost surely a no-go.
