Did you mean the Viva 845 SET amp?

I heard my HE1000s along with the Abyss, HD800s, and the LCD4s on this. I personally did not like it that much.

To my ears, it sounded quite tubey with an accentuated midrange, which is not my thing. YMMV.

Hey Sandy, what's the best amp for HE1000 IYO?

Hey Sandy, what's the best amp for HE1000 IYO?

I haven't heard it on enough amps to say!

I do like them one the Auralic Taurus mk2 (single ended mode), which a friend has.

I run mine off the back of a speaker amp, which I really love. It is 10 years old, and no longer made. It is a British solid state amp, made by Orelle, about 100W into 8ohms, or 25W for the HE1000's 32ohm load. Although a solid state amp, it has a very rich, warm, and fluid sound.

There is a little info on one here: http://www.audiocostruzioni.com/r_s/ampli/amplificatori-integrati/orelle-sa100-evo/orelle-sa100-evo.htm

Mine was a special edition that has, among other touches, a massive copper heatsink.

Nice. I have a speaker amp as well, how do you connect the amp to the HE1000?

I made up a female 4 pin XLR adaptor using 1mm 6N OCC silver with bare wire teminations to connect to the binding posts.

As the HE1000s are 90db efficiency, I just treat them as a pair of speakers.

Would it be over-powering if I drive them with a 600W per channel McIntosh solid state amplifier (paired with a tube pre-amp from the same brand)?

As long as you keep the volume to a sensible level (as you would with speakers), they will be fine.

Obviously, if you turn the volume to full clockwise position, you will pop them, just as you would damage your speakers.

On my amp, I listen at around the 9 to 10 o'clock position. Anything louder is uncomfortable.

I should add that you should take care on power up and power down. Always turn on the power amp last, and off first. Make sure that the volume is turned down when you are finished listening, etc.

Does the 9 to 10 o'clock position give you enough range of volume? Have you ever tried attenuating the signal?

Is there a list of amplifiers/dacs that will drive the HE 1000 to their full potential that are less expensive then the Macintosh? I have an Eddie Current Zana Deux a Woo WA 7, the built in amp on a Benchmark DAC 1, and the portable Theorem 720. I was told that none of these amps are able to drive the HE 1000 well.

I have a Eddie Curent 445 which drive the HE1000 very well since It Is quite powerfull and very detailed while still offering the warm of tubed. And....it Is for sale if you are interested (see my sig)

Is there a really good amp with a built in DAC to showcase the HE 1000 and again looking for a portable as well as home setup. Would like to keep cost under 2K

I've been using the Audeze Deckard and its an incredible value for the money. Compared to other amps in that price point and it's no contest.

For home use, I would again recommend the Master 11 and NFB-27H - the first uses an R2R DAC and the second uses a D/S DAC.
Of course if you want a transportable DAC with a built-in amplifier, you could also try the Ayre Codex
