HIFIMAN Releases New Flagship DAP "R2R2000"
Jun 4, 2020 at 2:17 AM Post #1,426 of 1,984
but even 1.9beta its not the same from 2019-03-14 (the one before I upgraded)
now I got 2019-12-03. have eco and hifi functions also battery is better not running out so fast like before.

Ha! This is what I though, too! When I upgraded mine, I thought exactly like you - that it did not work. So I wrote to Hifiman and asked.

But they told me the numbers behind the 1.9 (2019-03-14, 2019-12-03 etc. ) do not matter at all! As long you have 1.9 and it has eco mode now it WAS upgraded! So it actually worked!
:beerchug:

PS. Many things surrounding this player are really weird and, as the name says, "beta". The only thing one can do is focussing on enjoying the sound.

Hello !

Did someone compare the R2R2K red to the HM-801 on big headphones ? (HD800S for example  )

Thanks !

Just wrote this about the R2R2000 Red in another thread:

It’s a kind of nerdy device. I would compare it to a small retro futuristic sports car that isn’t very convenient and a bit quirky but soo charming 😬.

As a pure DAP, you really have to get along with the minimalistic OS. But I use it mainly as an USB- or Bluetooth DAC and for that purpose it's easy to use.
And sounds really great (besides it tends to hiss with sensitive IEMs)! Especially vocals are rendered fantastically. Signature leans towards mid centric and gentle treble. Has some vinyl vibes to it. If you listen to this for a while and then switch over to another DAP it is almost like they all sound artificial and a bit thin in the vocal area in direct comparison. Bass of the R2R2000 Red is very well balanced (slightly accentuated) and absolutely distortion free.

And oh, did I mention it’s so small and easy to carry! ☺👍

I like my R2R2000 black's sound best with my HE-1000se, where I can sit in my lazy boy with 64GB lossless music and a kindle eBook reader, and be able to move around when needed without being tied down to my laptop or desktop rig.

Interestingly, lately I'd been getting buzzing RF noise when using it as a USB DAC with my MacBook Pro 15 inch, but I need to now try it with my new MacBook Pro 16 inch.

I could write the same thing concerning the HM-801 (if I compare it to Sony gear for example). And I would add a great soundstage also, but would remove the little size !

You did not have the opportunity to compare these 2 DAPs, sonically speaking ?

Unfortunately I never had the chance to listen to the HM801. Soundstage - from my experience this term can be quite relative and depending on how people hear/define it. Me personally, I don’t find the R2R2000 Red particularly wide (=concert hall like, „out-of-head“) sounding. Because vocals are definitely pushed to the front, it gives a more intimate (= close to the singer in a smaller room) presentation. I have compared to the ZX507 and XDSD, for example, and both sound wider and vocals more distant. The sound of the Red is clearly very well layered though, just layers aren`t spread out widely.
By the way, I don't use these terms as "good" or "bad" - it's just a different presentation. Both types of presentation have their advantages and disadvantages, maybe also depending on music genre. Obviously the R2R2000 Red works really well with genres where you want to be close to a singer (vocal jazz, for example). For genres like ambient I prefer my XDSD because it gives a more "spheric" presentation. Its just little nuances, though. Generally speaking, to me there is no doubt the R2R2000 is a very good sounding device that can give a special taste to all kinds of genres. Hope that helps!

Hanesu, that's very clear and I understand perfectly what you mean. As I like vocals jazz, as ambient music, I often switch from one dap to another one. I think I have to try it to see if it is suitable for "my" all kind of genres, and mostly, it is has the same (at least) power, fullness and opening in bass and medium ranges than the 801.

That's a very entertaining, indeteresting, and detailed review. Lots of cool content and useful comparisons. How long did it take you to get this review out? Looks like a lot of work!

I honestly don't know lolz

For me R2R2K, sonically, is the best DAP I tested. I always got lost in the music for 2 hours (that is how much my battery lasted).

Currently, Hifiman is redesigning the R2R2000, I don't know what that makes of R2R2K black, but the new design shares the same design as the HM1000.
If HFM can get this right, I really love how the app is working and functioning. I'll probably get an HM1000 red as my daily DAP, as HM1000 is way too expensive to take out.

OK, that's fair enough

If I had to pick one just for my own pleasure, I'd go with the black one. I still remember HFM's HM-801 well.

Is the Hifiman music app coming to iOS in the US? It’s not in the App Store but supposedly exists.

Read a bit earlier in this thread!
Unfortunately it was taken from the app store for iOS! Nobody knows if it will come back...
