Introducing hip dac 3! The Legacy Continues!

As long as the USB C port you are using is capable of 5v you should have no issue using it to charge the HPD3.

Here is the blurb from the manual...

They are sort of combining a few potential ways here and separating with commas instead of "or". The amps to my understanding are irrelevant as the device will only draw so much. As the last line says just do not go over 6.3v

Hope this helps

Cheers!!

Thanks! With previous DACs connected to an iPhone 14, I’ve needed the camera connector kit. But those DACs had USB A ports. Is the USB C port on the hip-dac-3 the reason why no camera connector kit is needed?

I have my iPhone 14 connected to my hip-dac-3, and it appears to differentiate between different sampling rates, MQA, etc. This is pretty exciting!

How do I tell if a USB C cable is safe to use for charging the hip-dac-3? I have an Apple 2M USB C charging cable. Should that be fine? I’d also like to connect the hip-dac-3 to one USB C port on my MacBook Air and then charge the hip-dac-3 using the MacBook’s other USB C port. Can that be done?

My hip-dac-3 has stutters every now and then. The music stops for a brief second. This happens on streamed files and downloaded files, and across a few different types of devices (MacBook, iPhone, iPad). Is this a firmware issue? I haven’t updated it yet.

I’m loving the sound on this thing. I have it paired with a Meze Classic 99. I know the C99 don’t really need an amplifier, but the iFi sure gives everything a little more muscle without ever getting “boomy.”

As far as I know, and I believe it's been mentioned here before all you should need is the Lightning to USB C cable, the adapter should not be needed.

Yes any adapter with a USB C end as long as it is not outputting over 5v should be fine, or simply connecting a USB C to any USB A computer port will deliver the needed 5V I personally use an iFi 5v charger but that is simply because I have them available to me here.

It certainly should not be stuttering unless there is something wrong or something up with the connection to the streaming service. If this continues please start a support ticket on our website here...

That way if there is an issue with it you will have a record of it.

You can also take care of any firmware needs you may have here...

Hope this helps, and Thank you for enjoying our "Sound"

Cheers!!

In my experience (iPhone 13), the only dongles that required the camera connector were Audioquest Dragonfly Black, Red and Cobalt. In all other cases Apple certified Lightning to USB C cables sufficed 👍

From iPhone 15 onwards, connecting stuff (including audio) is even simpler :)

Regarding the “stuttering” what is your source ?

In my experience Tidal will often have a very brief glitch at the start of a track with any device, not a literal stutter as in an interruption of the sound just a briefest hiccup. The same happens with streamed tracks or downloaded tracks.

Apple Music doesn’t have such glitches.

Does this come down to USB A vs USB C? Lightning to USB C means no camera connector kit needed?

They invented their own analog crossfeed tech, yes, they put it in desktop Zen , yes, they put it in teeny tiny Go blus, yeah yeah we can,put it on same time as XBass,,its sound great wheb like the option 👍,,now lets build a much bigger one for the 3rd time H I p D a c. We put it on guys?..nono.no no(teehee rofl it makes no sense!)...
.. Anyone Xsplain?

Just shared my detailed review on the Ifi hip DAC 3 🙂

Some bullet points

- love the way it looks, very unique

- the xbass button is absolutely fantastic

- the overall sound is quite rich

- not the best volume knob

- the metal shell might get scratched easily

Any like or sub on my channel is appreciated 🙂

And here's my take on the hip-dac 3, I'm really fond of this little DAC/Amp, it definitely punches above its size and price and delivers exceptionally good audio quality in a small package:
