Mod House Audio Tungsten - Planar Magnetic Headphones - Impressions and Discussion

Many/most amps will drive Tungsten (or Susvara) with some level of success. They will make sound, probably at a reasonable listening level. But if you want THE MOST out of your low sensitivity planar it's going to take a little more effort.

Sort of like if you plug Utopia into an iphone dongle. It will absolutely make sound. It will get LOUD. But it won't sound like $5K. For that, you need to dig a little deeper. Contrary to some objectivist reports, not all wattage/current is created equal.
Then what should I look for in the specs?

I'd say a minimum of 12V for an average 80db loudness which is not loud but not quiet either

The ZenCAN puts about 12V at 150Ohms and just under 1W probably. I'd say it's sufficient to start with and you can at least know where you stand and know what amp to upgrade later

For those on the budget I just checked that Emotiva is making

  • Power Output (headphone output; direct drive mode - requires internal jumper; USE WITH CAUTION): 8 Ohms: 50 watts / channel 33 Ohms: 12 watts / channel
  • 47 Ohms: 8.5 watts / channel
  • 150 Ohms: 2.6 watts / channel
  • 300 Ohms: 1.3 watts / channel
  • 600 Ohms: 0.6 watts / channel

That’s if you use the jumper that bypasses the resistors. With this being the case and class A you will have the infamous pop upon powering on and off the unit. You’d also be losing out on balanced output.

What?
There's no pop, you should not turn on/off your amp with the headphones plug-in anyway just a good habit and you don't need balanced output, you are getting all the power thru the 6.3mm so what's the problem just get the adapter if you need to.

Well I guess you know more than someone that has the unit and spoke with Emotiva about it and they confirmed it's a thing.

To those that have already received their Tungstens, did you receive an email notice that it was shipping?
I only received a notice from UPS because I subscribe to their My Choice Delivery program.
