Just got this today. It's the brand NEW model with better power supply and asynchronous USB input. That means it has the Musical Fidelity V-Link inside ($169). Hope you guys like the unboxing video.
Whoa! No interest in this from anyone. I wonder if the "upgraded power supply will sound better than the old version since everyone complaint about the tiny power supply in the old version.
The original M1 DAC was a superbly engineered piece of gear if John Atkinson From Stereophile is to be believed, I wonder if the new one is improved or if they simply added more functionalities.
From my research about it, the dac is the same as the first version. The only changes is the v-link is now built-in, the same as the lower end v-dac II. But if I'm wrong, someone please feel free to correct me.
OK, good feedback. I'm just trying to figure out why there is so little published and forum praise for the M1DAC. I wonder if it is because many buy the lower priced V-DAC and upgrade the PSU. Someone referred me to a respected German audio mag article a couple months ago. I wish I could remember the specific magazine. But in short they found the V-DAC and M1 nearly indistinguishable when the V-DAC used a better PSU. This seems to line up with MF's literature on the M1 - the internal PSU with dedicated choke is supposed to sound better which would account for what you're hearing in your comparison.
It's confusing because while MF enjoys a pretty good rep., I find a comparative lack of published feedback on their mid-tier products, but relatively quite a bit about competing products like the Benchmark and Rega DACs. I'm basically trying to narrow down my purchase from those three brands for a secondary, dedicated listening room.
