I saw a post on Audio Asylum that reports sphere speakers are as good as it gets and can easily outperform Quads, or any other speaker system - Orb or Morel sphere speakers.   The guy replaced his Quads with them, and thinks they sound better than Gallo's - when placed about 18" from your ears.

Is this true???

If so, I guess you can quickly end your headphone and speaker search, as well as replace all your high-priced, high-end electronics.

I'm tempted to give it a try - it seems to make sense.

I don't understand how they can have any bass when:

  • They don't form a seal against your head, and
  • Woofers don't fit in speakers that size

Edit:  Oops, i didn't see they come with a separate subwoofer.

The idea of an Orb or Morel being "as good as it gets" is rather silly. I've heard the big Rockports, Tidals, NOLAs, etc. I know what as good as it gets sounds like, and they ain't it. The orb speakers are cute, I will give them that. The sound they produce is what can be expected of a full range driver in a tiny enclosure though. Moving them very close to your ears will eliminate many of the effects of poor room acoustics, so in that sense its possible they may sound better than an average speaker in a typical untreated listening room. They've got nothing on this kind of thing, though.
