Last night I took a pair of RatShack replacement foam pads and cut a small hole in the middle. The result was you hear more midrange and treble, as in you don't have to blast the volume to hear the ambient stuff, and slight gain in clarity. The midbass tightens up a little, but the lower notes are still flabby.

Personally I prefer thicker foamies with the MX500 to tighten and strengthen the bass more. Also I find the highs a bit harsh which the thick foamies manage to block out quite a bit.
