Change it to the Japanese version/region using the rockbox utility... it will stay in english, and then you'll also be able to create playlists from the player itself (I had the China ZX300a, worked like a charm - and fix is not mine, but from somebody else on this thread)
Just a question, how would you know if the zx300 was volume capped if buying used? The person I bought it from seemed kinda unsure, so I would just like to double check.
Ya I can double check it later but I'm fairly certain mine isn't capped, but I still do want to double check with rockbox I just have to download it first

If you guys are looking for a fantastic alternative to the awful Music Center and want it to be easier to synchronize your files without drag and drop, you can use MusicBee. It works amazingly well. You can tell it to push the files and then a folder.jpg file (resized if you choose) into a nice directory structure and it will synchronize perfectly with your library. Really clean and it doesn't mess with your metadata by adding stupid sort fields and such or embed multiple album covers.

Edited for the latecomers to the thread who want to uncap the volume or change region. I changed mines to Japan to get the 'playlist' feature.
Go here https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SonyNWDestTool and follow instructions. Download the two items.
Mines is recognised as my 'G' drive. Note how I changed it to a small 'g'
In the prompt box type/paste scsitool-nwz-v19.exe g: dest_tool get and hit enter.
Then paste scsitool-nwz-v19.exe g: dest_tool set J off There you can change the country/destination.
I had to rebuild the database after resetting the DAP but it`s easy and done through the settings.
Sony's Canadian website dropped their DAP prices this weekend! However, it didn't include the ZX300. Just the big boys: NW-WM1Z - $3,999.00 to $3,199.00 and NW - NWWM1A - $1,499.00 down to $1,199.00.
For you folks on Sony players who want an Acoustune ARC03 cable, I have a relatively new one (just two months old, barely used) that I'm selling, drop me a PM if you would like to get it.
