AKG needs a thousand dollar-level headphone. Granted, the K-1000 was (and still is) quite a legend.
beyer has one, Senn has one, Ultrasone has two, Audio-Technica has God knows how many... Or is the K701 (when well-amped) able to compete with any of those?

IMO, yes. Although I've not heard any of them except the 701. It's that good.
