Dan Clark Audio E3 Review: Interview, Measurements, Impressions

Great combo but not convenient at all on the go, if anyone has a great solution with great synergy on the go, it will be very useful for everyone who wants to move with its E3 according to the fact he could not find any better closed back at this price...

Haven't heard anything on your list but the E3...

Are you seeking isolation and low noise leakage? E3 has okay noise isolation and medium noise leakage. It's not anything like an open back's noise leakage but it's still noticeable.

Based on my E3 ownership, it has a slightly smaller soundstage than the he1000se but with better dynamics/slam. If you are seeking an open back experience in the closed back form, I can't recommend it enough.

Chain : Yggy LIM/Qutest -> Flux Mentor/Ragnarok 2 -> E3/he1000se
Not being purposely argumentative or anything, but was reminded of Sony X1r,, their bass detailing is something to be remembered in this category of headphone and might be reintroduced to this threads conversation? Also it's other qualities, soundstage etc?
Not my idea but from Passion For Sound recent video.

I got my E3 today. I don't understand how, but Dan used some real vodoo magic to make this headphones somehow sound like an open back with the good qualities of a closed back plus the insane amount of detail and even slam (not as much as my Focal but still good enough)... HOW!? They are the best sounding headphones I have ever had of any kind.

I finally, and unexpectedly, got the chance to demo the E3 today at Linear Tube Audio. I was really there to try out the Z10e + Aero DAC combo with my electrostatics, but the E3 was there, so I listened to it for a bit. Mostly used the Z10e's Low output headphone jack, with a bit of use on the High output jack. I don't listen that loudly, so the low output was more than good enough in terms of headroom. DACs used were the Ferrum Erco Gen 2 and LTA Aero.

Comfort was good. Not a fan of how the earcups extend so far down my face, but it's still comfortable.

Sound-wise, it's the most agreeable DCA headphone I've heard. Now, I'll be clear in that I'm not normally a fan of DCA headphones. I have the Aeon 2 Closed with perforated pads (nearly identical to the Noire) and I've heard the Stealth, Corina, and Expanse multiple times and the Ether 2 once. I don't like any of those headphones. They sound varying levels of dull and lifeless to me. But the E3, I could get along with it.

There are actually some dynamics here, roughly on par with my SR-X9000 and Shangri-la Jr electrostatic headphones. I know this doesn't sound like high praise, but the previous generation of DCA headphones were practically outdone in dynamics by those same estats. The E3 avoids the deadened, isolation booth sort of sound that made me dislike the Stealth and Noire. Drums have more of the decay that I expect from a drum without being as overly dense and dampened as on earlier iterations.

The soundstage was fine. It's not small, it's not as large as my electrostatics (which are open-backed), but I think it still lacks in some openness, which is a separate attribute from soundstage size. Excusable since it's still a closed-back and does a lot of other things well, and more openness in a closed-back usually requires compromises elsewhere.

Tuning was good, but also the source of my main issue with the sound. There's an odd emphasis somewhere in the upper mids that colors vocals with a slightly nasal tone. It sounds a bit like you push your tongue towards the top-back of your mouth and sing/speak like that. I picked up on it within seconds and couldn't unhear it. It sort of spoiled the sound for me, because it's so neutral everywhere else that there's nothing to hide that coloration. By comparison, the Shang Jr also has a boost in the upper midrange from 3-5K, but the scoop between 1-2.5K balances it out so vocals sound breathy and emotive, like their voices are strained with emotion, rather than just nasally. I also heard a bit of sizzle in the upper treble, but that wasn't as bad as the upper mids being odd. Fortunately, this is just a tonal issue, so it should be easy to EQ out.

Anywho, I'm glad I got to hear it. The E3, like all DCAs, do many things very well. They're well-built, extremely detailed, and quite neutral with good tunings. Anyone in the market for a $2K headphone would do well to give it a demo.

Has anyone bought a balanced (xlr) cable for these? I got some off ebay (china) and the quality is kinda iffy, they're also pretty microphonic. I was thinking maybe audioninja? Just dont feel like spending another $300+shipping on the DCA one.

When I had the Aeon Noire, I bought a Periapt cable for mine. Fantastic cable and inexpensive. I recommend checking them out if shipping works out for you.

You could try hart audio. Inexpensive with nice lightness/flexibility and a cool interconnect system to change terminations at will.

Hah, funny to see you here, Solar. Popped over to this thread cause I'm considering getting rid of my Expanse and Liric and replacing both with just E3. We seem to frequent the same places on here.

Anyway, what's the general consensus on E3 vs Expanse now that E3 has been out for a bit? Will I be missing anything important switching from Expanse to E3?
It would be pretty nice to have something 95%+ as good as Expanse but closed back now that summer is starting here and my room is noisier from the AC running.

After looking for a good cable supplier, I ended up with vendor EachDIY Earphone Parts Store from Aliexpress. Their cables are soft, close to zero microphonics and no shape retention memory. This is the one I bought for my Aeon 2 Noires:

Hi, anyone here who uses the E3 with an iBasso DX260 (which has impressive 1W on PO)... but would that be "just" enough if I want to use the E3 on the go?

Please allow another question, since the Munich Hi-End was so recent: Any new "reasonably priced" headphome amps in the region around 1K (or less) which drive the E3 really appropriately? ...the Aune S9c Pro with its 5W output for example?

I use a Topping A90D, which should be around half of 1K.

But power is not everything. For example, I also have a Fiio Q7 which has more than enough power, but the A90D and Jan Meier‘s Corda Classic drive the E3 much better. The Corda Classic even single-ended (as it has neither balanced outputs nor inputs.) So your iBasso probably will not drive them to their full potential. Of which the E3 has lots.

I also run them on an A90D and they sound fantastic. It’s a very powerful amp.

If it helps, I use the DC Elite with the E3 and I think it sounds pretty damn good for a portable solution.
