iFi audio iPower X - The Official Thread

Feedback to iFi Audio

Make a more audiophile/luxury version of this powersupply. Better, braided/sleeved cable. Remove the big light/LED and put the money into better cable.

This SMPS is such an elegant sound on my Cisco CBS220 switch right now.

I think this power supply goes well with FMC because of the clean and elegant sound signature.
A better cable would be great. I don't know why they made it so thin this time. The iPower 2 has a really nice thick cable.

Maybe LED/Light is the secret to the sound of this powersupply! - who knows!?

Atleast better cables could be improved

Nope, just certain Asian's like blue lights. Had I had a say I would have at least used a very warm orange....

who knows!?

I do.

Absolutelty. Plug too.

The PSU itself has milliohm level output impedance (and microvolt level noise), other than current limiting if power drawn exceeds ~12VA, the output impedance literally is the Cable and Plug/Socket and noise is most likely either common mode mains leakage mandated by EMC legistlation and/or noise picked up by the cable acting as antennae.

So a heavy gauge Coax Cable, like it was used on the original iPowers (for good reasons) is de rigeur. Or twin and shield with substantial gauge.

The DC plug/socket pretty much sux.

Much better DC plugs & sockets that are not much larger exist. I like XT90, which are rated at 90A and 0.0003 Ohm (0.3 mOhm) contact resistance.

I have years old question I keep asking myself.

Why has ifi never clarified this one that comes with the X?

The 2.1mm is the one on the cable, there is no.

The one on the picture fits a 2.5mm, what is this one?

However the 2.5mm on the specs is the one with reverse polarity.

@iFi audio
If I remember correctly that is the last one on the list, "Polarity Plug (White)" but let me reach out and clarify this 100% for you.

Cheers!!

I asked one of our tech support folks, along with the picture and this is the answer I got...

"That's the polarity adapter plug. Most things are center-pin negative. There are some things out there (guitar pedals and various other things) that use center-pin-positive"

Hope that helps!

Cheers!!

The information posted in this post in error has been corrected in the following post further down the thread, sorry for any confusion...

Nah. Made it even more confusing

Did you see my pictures with the white one that is ACTUALLY the reversed one?

The DC with the white RING is 2.1mm - 2.5mm with center being positive, but not clarified. I actually found a bunch of them in a drawer. the one with "C"

---

Most things are center-pin negative .... NAAAAAAH!

I will relay your post to him, in all honesty, I didn't know that's why I asked them.

Sorry!

Cheers!!

Tell him the adapter with a "C" and a white ring....not the all white colored one

And no worries

There is still one adapter missing on the specs!

"That's the polarity adapter plug. Most things are center-pin negative. There are some things out there (guitar pedals and various other things) that use center-pin-positive"

This is plain wrong. It's the other way. Seeing tech support getting it that wrong makes me worried.

Most equipment uses center pin positive, shell is negative.

There is one major exception and some minor exceptions. Musical effects that were powered by 9V batteries or mains adapters from Japan standardised on the japanese style "center negative", which is the opposite of the common standard.

In 2024 the only remaining products with this are guitar pedals. They need 9V. No other power supply input can be found now that is center negative. Back when an ipower was 39 or 49 USD, it was still a valid proposition for guitar players, especially it it would power multiple pedals without causing noise.

Historically some japanese portable CD-Players or K7 Players may also use this, as may some older Keyboards and/or Electronic Piano's or portable karaoke gear, all Made in Japan and most likely at a point where they should be considered museum pieces.

Plugging in the polarity the wrong way may damage the device it is plugged in. Don't do it.

I have no other comment as to what is inside the packages of a given ifi power product.

Back when I had something to say, I suggested USB Adapters to be included with 5V, the "Guitar Pedal Adaptor" with 9V (and ideally a breakout cable to power multiple pedals), nothing extra with 12V and only a 2.1mm Pin Adaptor, as this is mainstream.

There are so many alternate options, leave it to e-bay. No matter how much you put in, there will always be an irate customer that needs the one single adaptor not included and seeing all the others included get's upset that he is personally sleighed.
