Scalpel Assassin
Pros: Amazing details - literally analyzing your music
Airy highs just at the edge of being harsh
Wide soundstage (semi-open design, might be the biggest stage in iem)
Very energetic sound
Fantastic bass, deep and impactful
Sub-bass is incredible (but need a bit of EQ)
Easy to drive
Outstanding with electronic music
Accessories and build are superb
Pretty good timbre
Cons: Don't like stock cable (copper fits them better)
Sub-bass need some EQ (just a touch)
Isolation is not great because of semi-open design
No chance to relax with these
Timbre could be better
Might be harsh for some in treble region (fixable with filters, tips I believe)
No need to repeat what has been written in these reviews on this page. For me this is an amazing set worth every penny. Out of box they were just ok but after some burning time, swapped filters to green and changed cable to OCC + Alloy = OMG sound. These are full of life and energy, they have fantastic details and a very wide soundstage for iem. They are semi-open designs and I believe there are not many of these kinds of types around. Thanks to the semi-open design you can hear the sound coming from a distance at you and it really feels like being in a large room or hall. The benefit is also that when you are listening to them and something is happening around you like somebody is calling you or so you can still hear it while with other iems you wont be able to.

I had to use some EQ to get the best out of them but when I do it is really an OMG result. They are like an animal waiting for the signal to be pushed into your ear canals and they do that really well. I love them with electronic music especially something energetic like techno, DNB, electro but they wont disappoint you with any other styles too. Their overall tuning might be slightly cold and dry but also very analytical and detailed... This is mostly in the mids and highs. The bass on the other side, it is a chapter by itself. Their bass is more mid-bass focused but with slight EQ in sub-bass region this brings you the very best in terms of bass impact and rumble. Its pretty tight but detailed at the same time. Do not forget these have beryllium dynamic drivers I believe 13.6mm big just for bass !!! Might be the biggest in any iem. It is not noticeable until you give it just a bit more power and perhaps a bit of EQ push in the region from 80hz below.

I call them scalpel because it really feels like you dissecting the music to look at what is inside of each track. With these you will hear sounds in tracks you have not heard before (well in case you are not coming from 2k sets and so). I believe heavy metal users would love these too. I have not tried that but also did some classical music and I did enjoy it very much too.

Yes, there are new models out there, yes there are other hybrids, tribrids but why do you need them? They all cost way more than FH9 and I bet most of them wont sound this good. If you are not a collector then you need perhaps just 2 iems... FH9 and something like Penon Serial which is a total opposite of what FH9 provides.

If you have these you can be ensured that you are in the top iems league and I am serious. I have heard some expensive iems too and was not that impressed comparing them to FH9. Do not get fooled by their pretty affordable price here. They really compete in way higher levels.

Small advice if you get them or listen to them and are not impressed first do experiment with them a bit (cable, filters, tips or even EQ) once you adjust them to your liking you will love them.

Happy Listening :)

PS: (if possible I will edit post later and add some photos of mine set too)

Denon AH-D700 in 2021 still amazing
Pros: Amazing bass, very clear, warmish sound, good soundstage
Cons: a bit loose fit, not good swivel design, isolation not great
I purchased these in 2021 after I got the D7200 couple of months before. Its great I can compare these two.

Overall, the D7000 is very balanced and detailed with slight v shaped sound. Its not a reference type / too neutral sound but its very engaging and extremely enjoyable to listen to them. Their nice warm and detailed sound combined with soft angled pads and pretty light weight makes these a fantastic set of headphones. You can listen to any kind of genre out there and these will not let you down. You will find a hard time to take them off your head and replace with something else, trust me.

Trebles are nice and sparkly and tuned slightly down which makes them warmer and not fatigue at all. They have still amazing details and clarity but they are definitely not harsh in any way. The mids are fantastic, full of enjoyment and dynamic with nice separation. They are also very detailed but in the same time they are slightly tuned down as well. I believe this is maybe done by purpose because on the other side the bass... OMG. Its such nice punchy and dynamic bass with a lot of depth and weight. One thing to describe it is WOW. One of the best bass presentation you can experience with closed back headphones.

To make them even better sounding I am using APO Equalizer with PEACE plugin. I have tuned the EQ just slightly to make them a bit more open and clear like sounding. I think these settings work well as I have tested those on many different kind of genres. Plus you can simply turn it ON / OFF to hear the difference by yourself.

Comparing to the new D7200 the D7000 feel like a toy. They are too light, too loose and here its very obvious the age difference. The sound is pretty close to my ears but the D7200 are definitely darker sounding. They are also easier to drive. Out of the box I think the D7000 might actually have better and more balance sound. The bass is pretty similar but I think the D7200 cups are making it slightly better sounding. But when listen to them both closely and making A/B comparison I can hear that the D7200 has better mids. There are more details, a bit more air. Note this is all before the EQ.

Now, after the EQ its a different story. The D7000 do not need a much of EQ tweaking, they sound pretty good even without. My EQ settings made them just a tiny bit clearer and open like sounding. But the D7200 EQ (shared my settings in D7200 thread) is becoming a different kind of beast. With the right EQ settings the D7200 sound simply magnificent. All the darkness is gone, all the muddy upper mids are also gone they just sound so neutral but still a lot engaging to my ears. As one of the user reply to me thank to the EQ settings he feels like his headphones changed from £500 to £1500 sounding unit. I personally also think they must be very close to the D9200 after the EQ in terms of the sound and that was my aim.

I am sharing with you my D7000 EQ settings for those who can try them please do and improve your sound. If you find different settings working better for you please share them with us.

The AH-D7000 are still an amazing headphones even after 12 years from their release. The quality sound is quality sound.
If you can get these in great condition DO NOT HESITATE AND GRAB THEM. You wont be disappointed. Well done Denon.

Pros: Comfort, Solid feel, Amazing bass, Good mids and highs, Excellent cable, Very soft pads, Decent isolation, Very good soundstage
Cons: Not neutral, Could sound a bit too dark for some genres... mids & highs could be improved, not portable or for outside use
I have got these recently and was surprised by their quality and solid feel. They quite heavy too but definitely not too heavy. They fit nicely and they are very comfortable mostly due to great extra soft pads. They also isolate pretty well but they could do better.

Carry bag they come with is very solid with very thick texture, rubber material from inside, it will last forever. Comes with two cable one for mobile use = nothing extra and the second one for home use very decent and pretty thick cable, quite long as well about 2m. Connectors are great quality too. Very happy with their look and feel... I did not expect them to be so good.

They might be a bit too big for some people and these are definitely not portable. They are easily driven according the paper but I have only tested them with proper Denon amp PMA-720AE. Sound quality overall is excellent. They have this great Denon signature sound which is warm with pretty neutral highs and mids and slightly overpowering bass but only to make them more enjoyable. I did definitely enjoyed every minute of listening these trying various genres these HAS NOT failed me once. All genres were pleasure and fun to listen. Where these excel is electronic music, 80s synthesizers, 90s dance, techno, etc. Also soundtracks form movies like Inception, interstellar, predator made me love these. Another nice experience was listen to high quality jazz music and surprisingly again these managed to reproduce the instruments very natural and realistic with great amount of soft pleasure to listen to bass emphasis. The song I enjoyed at most with these was the Queen Radio Ga Ga (FLAC).... I almost cried listening to this song with D600, it was just EPIC.

These headphones are further excellent for movies and gaming. When I played Outlast 2 for example they added a different level to the overall experience. I strongly recommend these for long listening sessions as they do not make you tired at all. Can't think of any better headphones for movies and gaming as headphones with such strong / good bass always sacrifice the mids and highs for that purpose. Somehow these D600 don't. Yes, they are slightly darker than other good cans out there and they could do more with better highs and mids. You would not notice this until you compare them directly with other cans then you know the highs could be crisper and mids more forward. I heard from different sources that this issue improves rapidly with some extensive burning procedure. You need to burn these for hours to get the best out of them and I cannot wait to get to this stage. Since few days of proper burning I definitely could hear the improvement.

Note that these cans might be not the right ones if you are for flat or as much natural sound as possible. If you are looking for professional monitor cans with better detail and isolation you might look elsewhere. If you are about great sounding bass with very good overall sound quality plus the fun factor of listening to pretty much anything then these are the right ones for you.

I got these for only 130 pounds here in UK including extra solid case for them and I am super happy about this purchase. I wish I could compare them to the D7100 and to find out what is the buzz all about but my next aim are the D7200 ones. I will post the full comparison of these for sure. If you curious about the direct comparison to MM400 and HP800 then check this link you might found the results surprising: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/denon-d600-vs-denon-mm400-vs-denon-hp800.856127/

Forgot to mention the soundstage which I like a lot. They sound just the right size not too much in your ear but also not too far from the source... well done. I personally think these are quite underrated and people many times don't test them with proper amp and source. If you tried them for longer you fall in love.

Just want to add that after lot of hours of listening and also some additional burning in these sounds fantastic. The mids and highs opened and they are more forward now which is exactly what these cans needed. Excellent headphones for the price and great headphones for overall genres, movies and gaming.

Pros: Great sound clarity and details, lightweight, comfortable, punchy bass, lifetime warranty
Cons: Old looking design, headband that will rip off your hair, leak sound in and out, not quality cable
These headphones are well known for its low price and quality. I think they should be called shockers because when you look at them its one thing but when you listen to them suddenly they change to the most expansive cans you can get :)  Sounds is really impressive, something you must try.

Overall great headphones. I actually prefer the design of Sporta Pro not Porta Pro... I had both so I took speakers from Porta Pro which are better and got them into the Sporta Pro headband which looks cooler. I also put double pads on both sides so they are a lot more comfortable. These are great for travelling where you dont have much space to take them with as they fold into pretty small compact size.

Koss should really reconsider to change the design of these as the headband could be done better way, they could try to make a closed version of these, replaceable cable and maybe rotating cups then they could seriously compete with HD25 from Sennheiser. The fact they do leak sound in and out makes them difficult to use outside which I find the biggest issue with these. Forgot to mention the cable quality should be improved too as it intend to break when you wearing them outside due to the hot / cold weather. This happens to all of them and I have 3 pairs.

I always wanted to try some other models from Koss but haven't had the chance.

100+ Head-Fier
Pros: Great Sound Clarity and Details, High Quality Material, Comfortable to wear, Soft Padding, Decent Isolation
Cons: Included Cables Not Great Quality, Unique Oval Jack Input Shape, Not Suitable For Outside Wear
I have got these recently and I am very happy with my purchase. Denon has not failed me so far and I have used few of their products. I think somebody in Denon knows that the high quality will make people to come back and buy more products from this brand.

The packaging is very nice and quite heavy. The headphones itself are quite heavy due to the high quality materials and solid build quality. On the head they don't feel heavy as the padding makes it very comfortable and soft to wear. The packing has very nice box with solid quality feel. There is no carrying case but I am using the box as the storage for these as it feels high class. They come with 2 cables which are not that good, looks like average quality, thin and feels a bit cheap. They both the same length, straight just one has the volume control including mic. This is the only thing really I am not happy with but I like customize my headphones so already found some cable replacements online. BE CAREFUL when you get new cable as the jack input is oval and very unique you need to find something that will fit or plastic jack which you can brush off. I am adding a photo of the input hole. There is also a carrying bag which is from fabric but again very solid and nice to touch.

Build quality seems to be very good here, they feel very solid and I am sure they will last. The wooden cups and luxurious design wont make these headphones for external use. Weather would be not friendly to them plus they will attract punks to steal these from you. They look and feel more expensive then they are. Design wise these look better than most of the expensive headphones out there. In terms of design I would like to see them next to MSR7, EL-8 and MP3.

I have nothing to say regarding comfort other than positive. They are supper soft with the pads and headband pad being quite thick. Clamping force is ideal for me, some users complain about it but I have no issues. Comparing to my HP800 these feels like pillows laying on my head where HP800 feels like somebody is pushing hands against my ears. Be careful if your head is bigger or you have bigger ears as then you might have issues with these like ears touching the insides or higher clamping force. If you have these issues before you return them try to put them over nights to something bigger like box or something to strech them then the clamping force will ease up. Same for the pads if they are not comfortable then look for replacements such MSR7 fits as I heard and they should be slightly thicker, more comfortable.

Sound isolation is pretty good. They isolate slightly better than HP800 but still less than Sennheiser HD380 or HD25. But definitely recommend these for flights or other noisy travelling if you want to consider them for travel.

Sound quality.... as I expect very impressive. Warm sounding headphones which are fun to listen and don't feel cold and analytical like some German brands Sennheisers, BeyerDynamic, etc. I think they could still be used for monitoring and other sound work but there are definitely other cans for this purpose. These are meant to be for listening to the music and enjoyment. Music sounds nicely soft and warm with good quality punchy bass and nothing is in forward. Bass is slightly boosted but only tinny bit, not overpowering the mids or leaking to them. Mids are very detailed and clear, Treble are crisp and neutral not harsh at all. I really love Denon sound signature their cans are pleasure for listening and they are not tiring like other cans are. I can wear and listen to these for hours even whole day no problem. They are still new so I am in process of burning them in. Soundstage is not that great but they have this nice intimate feel when listen to something. They do not sound directly in your head like HD25 or similar headphones. Imaging is fantastic too, few times I caught myself looking around and wondering if there is anybody else in the room.

I wish I could have chance to compare these with other premium headphones but at least this forum make it up for me. I was just about to purchase MSR7 when I found these and knowing Denon brand already I decided to go for these. I am sure I made a good decision despite MSR7 are fantastic and very popular but I know they dont have this warm sound, they are on the cooler side with some time lacking a bit of bass. I use these for everything  listening music, movies, playing games. I also listen to all kind of music and they keep impressing me delivering amazing results. I do believe there are many better headphones but I think they would need to be on much higher price level.

Definitely give these a chance, at least try them or check them out if you are buying something in this price range. I got mines for £200 and I can ensure you these sounds and look more expensive then they are.

Although if you are on the budget and want something with similar sound but for less money then forget about other tips you got and check out the Denon HP800, they are dj headphones but they have amazing sound something similar than these and cost less than half of MM400's price. Definitely recommend both of these.

Feel free to ask any questions here or PM me.

Thanks

nice review @krenky, thank you!!!
any clues on upgrade cables, standard ones don't fit because of deep insertion
needs of MM400 design, and like you say the included cables are poor quality
physically and also sonically.  i have a feeling an upgrade litz cable or good silver
copper cable would dramatically improve the performance of the midrange and treble
on the MM400s...

Thank you for the comment. Yeah, the cable replacement is a MUST. I keep checking online, this one looks promising I have ordered one so will see when it arrives: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Replacement-upgrade-Audio-Cable-for-Denon-AH-MM400-AH-MM300-AH-MM200-headphone-/282200227278?var=&hash=item41b471bdce:m:mnTZxzBolW7iEG2w4dALKRA

I heard the V-Moda cable is able to fit in but not sure if directly or you need to adjust it somehow. If you find those cables with very tinny jack connector which are made from plastic / rubber than definitely you can easily trim them slightly and they will fit.... as soon as its metal / steel you wont be able to. If I find some other alternatives then I post the link here if not I might be forced to make one custom.

100+ Head-Fier
Pros: Amazing Sound Clarity, Soft & Warm Signature, Punchy & Quality Bass, Solid Build, Good Size
Cons: Comfort issues if you have bigger ears, Pads not too deep, Cable not detachable
DENON HP800

I purchased the Denon HP800 which is the probably the same as HP700 and I have to say these are amazing headphones. What convince me to buy them were great reviews I found and especially one article here on Head-Fi where somebody compare them to D7000 and said that these might even sound better for some songs and he gave A/B comparison with lot of details. I am sure you can find it easily.

These are perfect size in my opinion not too big and not too small. Only people with bigger ears might find them not suitable as the pads can sit on your ears then. This is not my case and they are just perfect for my head and ears. In nice package there is only big jack and textile bag which is ok but hard case would be bonus. These are pretty cheap headphones and very underrated. There is no way you get better sound for this price range, got mine for 79 pounds in UK.

When I tried first tracks I was really surprised how good they do sound. Also the isolation is very impressive. I have chance to compare them with my other pair Sennheiser HD25 and HD380. First HD380 are much better for long period as they are extremely comfortable but their built quality is not so good as Denon's. Denon's built quality is fantastic especially like the metal parts where they do extend but also just holding them in my hand feels rock solid. In terms of sound they are very very close to the HD380s. HD380 have a bit better sub-bass and they sound more spacious. It feels like you are in the concert hall where HP800 sounds like sitting in a studio. Somehow I find HP800 a tinny bit clearer / brighter than the HD380. Me personally for watching movies, sitting on computer for long ours I do prefer HD380 mostly because of the comfort and you wont get tired listening to them. But somehow for listening music and working with music, djing, mastering, etc. I prefer HP800. I still cannot believe how good they can sound, very detailed sound... I am actually exploring hidden sounds in songs and tracks.... amazing really.

I do also have HD25, which are amazing, love the fact that they are all easily replaceable and they also sound great. The isolation there is slightly even better. But I dont think they sound better than HP800 (IMO). HD25 sound a bit too much in your face and they are not so detailed than HP800. In terms of bass it's almost impossible how great the bass is in small HD25's cups but again my winner here is HP800. Hard to describe but somehow the bass feels a bit deeper too. Definitely the bigger cups on HP800 helps providing deeper bass. Also HD25 are small but they are sitting on ears and this is not comfortable over maybe couple of hours period. For me they are maybe good for travel or so.

Just to add that I was testing HP800 straight from the box today and that I used custom made headphone amp but I also use it with the other headphones to compare the sound here.

Few bullet points here:

PROS:

* looks cool
* built quality
* perfect size (for my head)
* clamping force is just ideal
* sound is amazing, so detailed... wow !
* overall sound very balanced - great for different genres
* best price really you cannot get anything cheaper / better here (IMO)

CONS:

* it might make you uncomfortable after few hours of using them (might be good idea to try different / bigger pads on them)
* cable is not too long (but at least coiled)
* cable is not detachable
* might not be right for you if you have bigger ears
* note the bass is balanced so if you are basshead it might not be the rigth kit for you
* would be nice to have case for them they just come with textile bag

I am very happy with my decision to purchase Denon HP800. I would love to hear from you guys if anybody else had chance to compare these to the ATH-50 or other studio or djs headphones. I believe there are better headphones than these but I do not believe there is anything better in this price range. Do let me know your experience with these headphones as I like to read other people's opinions.

I intent to purchase the Denon HP600 as well and use them for travel purposes, please let me know if anybody has them and what do you think. I hope that others find them the same good quality headphones as I do. Especially would love to compare them directly to M50s and MSR7 from Audio Technica. For me personally the Denon brand has the perfect signature in their headphones.

Just recently I found Denon AH-MM400 and probably going to buy these, I am going to post the comparison of these two in next few weeks.

Also note that there are models HP1000 and HP1100, I have not heard these but according my research these do not sound that good and clear.

100+ Head-Fier
Pros: Great detailed sound, amazing passive isolation, small and very practical
Cons: not comfortable for longer sessions, bass is not going very deep, small soundstage
I really like Sennheiser HD25, the sound is very detailed and balanced. I love the sound isolation which is I think the best from within all other closed headphones. They are very light and small which is great. The design would be superb if the cups could rotate 90 degrees but they cannot. I especially like that every single part is replaceable which I think is the reason why so many people buy these.
You dont want to spend too much and be forced to throw them away or pay for expensive repair after couple of years.

I would wear them in public but I dont like that the headband is sticking a bit outside from the cups which makes them wider than they are. Small design changes would bring these headphones back to the #1 position.

So many times these headphones simply crush anything else around them in terms of sound quality. They are precise, detailed and well balanced. The bass is nice and punchy but I would prefer if it could go slightly deeper. But dont worry its still deeper than most of the headphones within this price range. They are very loud which is another reason why other djs and professionals buying these. If you like them then do not hesitate as I dont think you find better on ear headphones. Yes, maybe Beyerdynamics DT1350 but for some reason I dont think they are so cool than these are.

If the soundstage would be slightly bigger that would be fantastic as comparing to the other headphones they might sound a bit in your face. These are great for work such mixing, editing, mastering etc. Specially if you use them in noisy environment.

When I search for new headphones I often use the term I look for something like HD25 but around the ear :)  Definitely wear them / check them in terms of the comfort before you purchase.

Pros: Very comfortable, Impressive Isolation and Quality Sound
Cons: Built Quality, Cable and Pads must be from Sennheiser only
I love these headphones. The design looks a bit odd but when you put them on its all about quality. I am using these for 3 years now, looking for maybe something better but its very very hard to find something similar especially for this price.

The sound isolation is very good which has a lot to do with their thick pads. They block almost everything around :)

Trebles and Mids are clear and not intrusive as we are used to from Sennheiser product. I love HD25 but they are not comfortable and the bass is not deep enough for me. This is all fixed with HD380. They have very nice, punchy and soft sub-bass which makes you fall in love with them. At first they might sound harsh or weird but they just need a bit of burning and then all problems fixed. I am sure they are other headphones with better quality but I think in this case you would need to go 2-3 or more times higher with the price.

Note that these also need good amp to get the best from them. Overall I love these and I decided to buy these for my father too as he is enjoying quality sound too. I recommend these to my friends and they are all thanking me for it.

There are few CONS as well:

* they might be too tight if you have big head (I dont :)

* the cord is coiled but a bit too heavy / bulky

* if you have to replace pads you MUST buy them only from Sennheiser as anything else will spoil them.
The pads from Sennheiser are unique they isolate very well, are very comfortable but they wont last you over 1 year if you use them daily.

* built quality could be better - the pads cover peal of after some time and the plastic bits covering the screws on hinges fall after some time too, so be careful not to loose them.

Again other than these they are just perfect. If like Sennheiser sound and closed headphones you have to get them !

Thanks for your review as imo i agree:

I have PC350, HD215 and HD380 pro and i find the HD215 the best out of all these closed type Sennheisers.
- the bass is well defined on the PC350 and Deep on the HD380 pro's, however the deep bass cut off on the HD215's is perfect.
it makes the all mids and highs separate and defined, and the bass rings through perfect when it's is present.
- i find the bass touches the other frequencies on the HD 380 pros with entertainment (i don't do music production)
- PC350 has more bass than the HD215, but this is a gaming headset and the mids are forward.
- all tested on X-Fi Titanium and Xonar D1 sound cards, i preferred the D1 for headphones overall.

bottom line, if vocal and general entertainment are your forte, i recommend the HD215's if you want sound perfectly clear at this price range.
i am not a bass head and at one stage i was,
the HD 215's changed all that for me.
