Introduction

Welcome to the Regancipher review of the Tronsmart Bang 60w Bluetooth Speaker. This is my second speaker review from Tronsmart and a second break in tradition of the day after I even published an IEM review this morning - usually I only publish earbud reviews, but I was in the audio industry for a long time before Bluetooth was even a mainstream thing, and have taken enough brands of speaker to festivals and hotels for weekends on the sesh to know a good (and a bad) one!

Tronsmart are now fully established as a mid range technology vendor at a very competitive price point, with their focus almost solely on audio products - mostly speakers and headphones. Founder Eric Cheng, a self-confessed geek, founded the company with his first paycheck (where was he working?!), building a lab to disassemble audio products with the aim to recreate them in his own vision at a cost-efficient price point. After bringing in ear-chewing trophy-winning footballer Luis Suarez as an ambassador, the company have gone from strength to strength, building a close relationship with Qualcomm, and bringing two of their chips to market first with the Apollo Bold and Apollo Air. For speakers, the range is now almost as extensive as their earbuds, ranging from 7, 10 and 15w mini speakers through to the 60w Force Pro and Mega Pro.

The Bang is the latest in Tronsmart's very successful range of audio products. Like the Force Pro, it offers a 2.2 channel, quad speaker audio system, but compromises a little on the IP rating to bring a beat-driven LED light display and adds a couple of Tronsmart's patented features, whilst also looking a damn sight prettier!

You can see the full range of Tronsmart speakers here

The Unboxing

It was a real struggle actually photographing the unboxing, so a YouTube video is on the way! The box is massive, and it needs to be, with the speaker coming in at almost 40cm wide. The speaker is held in with large foam inlays, and you get the usual excellent manual from Tronsmart, which gives you text in most European languages as well as Chinese. The manual gives superb visual instructions on Button Configuration, what the lights mean, how to operate the device, how to use their patented TuneConn technology, and a walk around each of the inputs. You get a USB-C charge cable and an AUX cable, as well as the usual Tronsmart Warranty Card.

Build Quality

a1.png

This is my second Tronsmart speaker, and both have really surprised me with how hefty they are. The Bang is a beast - but it still retains sufficient portability to take it's place as the ultimate party speaker. Whilst it is predominantly plastic, the grills are metallic, the buttons and input cover are rubberised, and there are rubbery-foam feet to add to the stability. The top handle features the Tronsmart logo and adds to the portability of the device. Despite it's durability, it is much lighter than many of it's competitors in this space, without compromising on build quality or looks.

One of the minor quibbles I had with the Studio was the buttons. Their black profile means in the dark, it can be difficult to see what each button does. It is a similar story with the Bang, but fortunately, the raised icons are much larger than the studio, and accompanied by the blue LED denoting that the speaker is powered on, as well as the colour-changing LED's to the base and sides, you get a little ambient light too, and this does help with discerning what button does what. It would have been even better to see the button array lit-up, and perhaps this is an area Tronsmart can improve further for the future.

The button bar from left to right holds the area for fast-pair via NFC (I used this with my OnePlus 8T and it worked instantly), four white LED's - they tell you how much battery is remaining, TuneConn, Mode, Volume -, Play/Pause, Volume +, SoundPulse, and finally Power On/Off - this button has a 'thumb' indent, making it easy to find - a really nice idea. 'Mode' switches between the different inputs, as well as hailing voice assistant when held down for 2+ secs.

尺寸.jpg

The speaker is just over 3kg and is IPX6 rated - Tronsmart advertise it as an external speaker, and that is exactly the use-case. The grill is quite firm, meaning it will take a bit of force if your parties get out of hand and you're unfortunate enough to have guests from the UK!

a3.png

At the rear, this is where all the action happens. Once you peel back the rubberised input protector, you are greeted by an array of inputs, all of which worked very well. First up is actually not an input but an output - the Bang doubles up as a power bank! So if your phone is running out of juice, you have the option of utilising the 5v 1a USB-A output - very handy. This not only allows you to charge, but it will also read the music on the USB-device too. To the left ,you have a tiny reset button, which is shrouded so you'll need a paperclip or something like that to be able to reach it. To the right is the DC-in charge socket, next is a 3.5mm jack AUX and finally a TF-card slot. There are no sharp edges - everything is really well-finished, and the arm to the rubberised door is really sturdy and in-keeping with the rest of the device, top quality workmanship.

a2.png

The Bang features a beat-driven LED light display, which can be set to follow the beat or left in solid, one-colour. As well as the above pictured red, yellow, blue and pink, you also have orange, green and purple. The LED configuration can be set in the same Tronsmart app you use for your Apollo Bold/Air - really good to see this app maturing, unlike many vendors who struggle to get their range supported via one app.

Features

TuneConn 技术.jpg

Tronsmart have a few pretty cool patented features. First up is TuneConn™. TuneConn™ is Tronsmart's 'broadcast' mode, enabling up to 100 speakers to be synchronised wirelessly in leader/follower configuration. The only drawback is you need the same model, so I wasn't able to test this with the Studio, but regardless it's a useful feature - for company giveaways at team building events you could see this working very well.

SoundPulse® is Tronsmart's sound enhancement feature. I have found this to be really useful for cleaning up bad audio inputs, so I generally leave it left on, but it does impact slightly on battery life.

NFC.jpg

NFC Fast Pair is very useful, with most smart devices now supporting it. I found this far easier than faffing around with Bluetooth. That said, when I did try separately using Bluetooth on my non-NFC device, it was very straightforward, and the app picked up the speaker straight away, allowing me to very quickly access the settings and update the firmware.

操作说明.jpg

The speaker can actually be used for calls too. Play/Pause allows calls to be answered, and you can redial the last number by hitting the same button twice. Voice assistant is initiated by holding the M button down, and it works pretty well, supporting both Siri and Google Assistant natively.

app.jpg

App support from Tronsmart is great. Sometimes it feels like there are some wasted spaces, but you get a number of options here, including customising the LED colour, setting the input mode, setting up broadcast mode and updating firmware, as well as assigning the appropriate EQ's listed in the Sound section (and more). This is a really nice feature, because the transmission distance is quite strong (around 15m) and it means there's no need to traipse back and press the buttons on the unit - hugely helpful.

The app doesn't feel 'spyware-y' like some do, and it supports the majority of the Tronsmart portfolio, regardless of chipset - unlike some of their competitors.

Battery Life

Battery life with no LED's on came in at around 13.5 hours on first play, but is battered by the LED's and full volume, dropping to around 6.5 hours with both on. Whilst this is more than adequate for most users, it falls a little way short of the far more expensive JBL BoomBox 2 and ugly Soundcore Motion Boom. 4.5 hours for a full charge is also a little onerous, but the charging seems to be linear, meaning you can charge for a couple of hours and it will give you around 50% of the advertised full charge.

Sound

Sound on the Bang is as you would expect with Tronsmart - beefy and boosted. The 60w power is evident as the sound drives home, and using SoundPulse you get maximised boost with minimal distortion. At the furthest distance before Bluetooth started to drop, I was still able to register 98dB-A - this is the equivalent to being stood next to a French Horn! Closer up and you feel like you're in a nightclub - and that's because in audio terms, it's a very similar register on the dB meter.

Tronsmart only support the SBC codec in their speakers. This makes perfect sense, as there are no latency requirements, because there is no video like on a smartphone watching YouTube. SBC can sound a bit trashy on TWS, but on party speakers, where analytical listening is not really required, it is perfectly fine, and the Bang does a great job in this respect.

Bass response on this model is excellent. Midbass is very strong, and subbass comes through in true Tronsmart fashion when 'Deep Bass' is selected, taking full advantage of the woofers. The default sound option is more rounded, with a focus on lifting the mids whilst retaining a bright sound signature. 'Hi Fi' mode elevates the high mids, giving female vocals an extenstion, and 'Vocal' does this even further, sounding a little shrieky at times. The other modes, like with Tronsmart's TWS, aren't for me - Rock is particularly bad, Classical doesn't really suit this speaker (even though it is my preferred EQ setting on some of their other products) and 3D is probably worth avoiding too, but you have them there has options anyway, selectable via the app.

The Bang has decent imaging for an external speaker - it's fun, bouncy, well built and packs a punch.

Summary

The Bang is probably my favourite speaker release from Tronsmart so far. Whilst I haven't always understood the market for some of their releases, there is no doubt the Bang has some prime use-cases - for carting around on trips out to the beach, parties, festivals and weekends away, it comes into it's own with great sound, good portability, nice LED lights, IPX6 water resistance and a multitude of inputs, app support and presets.

The battery life could be longer, and the long charge times are a bit of a nause, but the Bang is otherwise an excellent release that beats the Soundcore equivalent for looks, and smashes the JBL for price. Nice job, Tronsmart!

Tronsmart remain one of my favourite mid-tier vendors, outrunning their budget competitors by releasing flagship products alongside the run-of-the-mill releases, and demonstrating transparency and commitment to quality and innovation with every release.

Obviously being a Bluetooth speaker, the primary source will be Bluetooth 5.0 using SBC codec. Sadly no other codecs are supported as far as I can tell. Pairing is simple using NFC if your phone supports it. Additionally, music can be put on TF card/USB drive or using an AUX cable.

Power: 10800mAh battery will play music for 15 hours or 8 hours using the LED lights. It is also possible to slow charge your phone using the USB port. The charge time is 4.5 hours.

Controls:

The row of buttons covers the basic functionality but there is also app support which handles the more advanced features starting with updating the firmware

as well as source selection, the Tuneconn linking functionality for connecting up to 100 Bang speakers, LED color theme, and remote power off.

Sound:
Generally, I was pleasantly surprised with the sound quality. Out of the box, it sounded a bit more neutral than party, but that is what the EQ settings are for in the mobile app. It is an outdoor party speaker that needs to deliver a large amount of sound without much distortion and I think it does that very well. The EQ settings will refine it and I did prefer the Sound Pulse setting for a bit more party than the default setting. The EQ settings are labeled quite accurately, Deep Bass = heavy bass, Vocal is just the vocal range, everything else is dipped down. I defintiely preferred a more balanced sound found in Default or Sound Pulse which is also the setting to use if you prefer your lights to flicker with the beat.

1648874130342.png

Conclusion: At $109usd, I think Tronsmart delivered a solid smart Bluetooth speaker that not only sounds great but has a few features not found in similar products. The mobile app support is actually quite nice if you have other Tronsmart smart products like their TWS as it uses the same application. Looking forward to what Tronsmart delivers next.

The Party Goes On! 🎉 - Tronsmart Bang 60W Review
Pros: - Powerful Sound
- SoundPulse Mode (Great Sound)
- Good Battery Life
- Packed with Useful Features
- Useful App with EQ
Cons: - Treble is slightly sibilant and harsh (even with Soundpulse on)
- With Soundpulse off, Treble is sibilant, harsh, and overall note weight thin
- SBC only support. No APTX, LDAC, or other higher quality Bluetooth codec

INTRODUCTION:

Tronsmart Bang is Tronsmart's latest Bluetooth speaker in their already impressive line-up of Bluetooth products. The Bang retails for $109.99usd and it is targeted mainly to party go-ers or outdoor users in general.

Upon opening the box, I am presented with a 3.5mm male-to-male jack, a USB charging cable, some manuals, and last but not least, the IEM itself. Overall, pretty decent unboxing. Since the product has a handle attached on top, I do not think that a carrying case/pouch is necessary so I won't complain much about this.

Anyways, with that out of the way, let's start the review.

*Disclaimer: This review will be done from a consumer point of view. I will focus more on tonality than technicalities as these are obviously made for parties, NOT for critical listening.

20220310_210358.jpg20220310_210824.jpg
20220310_210633.jpg

PART 1 - NON-AUDIO OPINIONS:

  • Build Quality: Solid. Although slightly heavy, it is very sturdy and can take some slight beating. Based on my observation, the speaker grills are made from metal and most of the body is made from plastic covered in rubber for extra grip and protection. Not to mention, there's a handle on top for easy outdoor carries.
  • Battery Life: 10800mAh battery. Can last around 15 hours with 50% volume (LED Off). With LED on, battery life is around 8 hours. Charging will take around 4.5 hours for a full charge (via Type C)
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth Version 5.0 with SBC support. I have not experienced any pairing issues.
  • NFC: yes. Pairing is as easy as tapping the NFC tag (Android phones only)
  • Power: 60W. Loudness/volume is not an issue here.
  • Waterproof: Yes with IPX6.
  • Weight: 3.08kg/6.79lb. It is slightly hefty, but can definitely be carried around with one hand.
  • Patented SoundPulse Audio for impactful stereo sound. (I recommend keeping this on at all times)
  • Patented TrueConn Technology (seamless pairing with other Tronsmart Bluetooth speakers for a chain of speakers)
  • Beat Driven LED lights (pretty cool during parties but I keep it off to save battery life)
  • Built-in PowerBank (to charge other devices with its 10800mAh battery)
  • Personalized App Control with 8 EQ Effects (App works pretty well. Similar to other Tronsmart devices)
  • Various Music Playing Modes (Bluetooth, TF Card, U-disk, Aux-in)
  • Voice Assistant Support (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant)

20220310_210741.jpg20220310_210655.jpg

PART 2 - SOUND:

Strengths ✅ (with SoundPulse on):
  • With SoundPulse on, the sound signature here is perfect for parties. You will get a fun and engaging V-shaped sound signature with deep rumbly bass, coloured mids, and crisp highs. You also get a 20~% volume boost with SoundPulse on. I highly recommend keeping SoundPulse on at most times to get the most out of the Tronsmart Bang. The sound impression below will be made based on my experience with SoundPulse ON.
  • In terms of loudness, the Tronsmart Bang is capable of getting VERY LOUD. With 60w of power, this isn't a surprise. For indoor use (studio-sized room), 20% volume is more than enough to fill up the room.
  • For an outdoor party, around 50% volume is enough to get plenty loud.
  • In terms of bass, the bass here is full, deep, rumbly and fun. The bass here is pretty capable. Even when placed in a huge room at the far end of a corner, you could still hear the fullness and thickness of the bass. This ensures that everyone is kept engaged at all times, no matter the mood or venue. With SoundPulse off, the bass becomes thinner and weaker. As mentioned above, I recommend keeping SoundPulse ON.
  • In terms of midrange, it is warm, thick, and engaging. Upper mids are slightly boosted which makes vocals sound crisp and clear.
  • In terms of treble, the treble here is bright, crisp, and elevated. With SoundPulse off, the treble here can get pretty sibilant and shouty with a thin presentation. However, with SoundPulse on, the shoutiness and sibilance are less noticeable, probably thanks to the boosted bass balancing out the treble.

WEAKNESSES ❌:

  • (with Soundpulse off) Sibilant, bright, thin sounding treble. Note weight is thin too with limp-y bass
  • Even with Soundpulse ON, treble can sometimes be a bit hot and sibilant.
  • Very steep volume jump from 10% - 20%. I find 20% to be too loud for a studio-sized room while 10% to be too soft. (Might be an issue with my phone)
  • V-shaped signature can be a bit too harsh and lethargic for long listening sessions.

CONCLUSION:

Coming in at $109.99usd, I think the Tronsmart Bang is a pretty good deal. It sounds good (with SoundPulse), has good battery life, great Bluetooth connectivity, IPx6 waterproof, packed with tons of features, and most importantly, once you have the Tronsmart Bang, you can't go to a party without it.

Great job Tronsmart. Looking forward to more consumer goods with good sound quality.

Thank you Ella from Tronsmart for sending the Tronsmart Bang 60W over. I am not at all compensated by them and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tronsmart Bang Portable Speaker Review - Starting the Party with a Bang!

Intro

Tronsmart doesn't need any introduction as i believe they're quite popular among the wireless earphone/speaker's space. The products that they launched are usually "wallet" friendly and also carries a certain standard in terms of sonic performance. Bang, the new portable speaker is no exception either. Let's take a look at the specifications below:

"Copied from Tronsmart's website"
Power60W
Input5V/2A via Type-C Port
Bluetooth Version5.0
Bluetooth CompatibilityA2DP/AVRCP/HFP/HSP
Audio DecodecSBC
Transmission Distance18m/59ft

Net Weight3.08kg/108.6oz
Package Contents1 x Tronsmart Bang, 1 x Warranty Card, 1 x User Manual, 1 x Type-C Cable, 1 x Aux Cable

Test Equipment Used (As it only supports SBC Codec, i only stick to using one device as it will not utilize better bluetooth codec as well)
- Iphone 12 Mini

*Disclaimer
I received this unit from Tronsmart in exchange of this review, i am not influenced by Tronsmart in any way to produce this review and all thoughts are of my own.

I will skip the packaging part as i received the unit with a box containing the speaker itself and without any cables. I'm sure retail unit will be different anyway.

Battery life
Tronsmart claimed that it is able to last +- 15 hours with the LED lights off. So i've decided to verify the claim.
Of course i did not get 15 hours as advertised, but i did get close to 13-14 hours with the LED lights off, to me it is good enough. However, with the LED lights on, the battery life is halved

App Functionality
Tronsmart Bang is compatible with Tronsmart's app. The app allows you to customize the EQ on the fly, update the firmware of Bang, and also to turn off and on the LED lights. The app worked fine and i did not encounter any hiccups while navigating it. You can also change the colors of the LED or set them to automatic which in a way follows the beat of the music

EQ
There are 7 EQ settings available in the app itself. The default is standard and there's a Sound pulse mode which seem to boost the low and high frequencies a few DBs.
Personally i preferred the default settings as it gives a more balanced sound to my ears and less aggressive.

Sound (Impression is based on standard EQ setting)
Bang is a good sounding portable speaker which punches above its price point in my opinion. Despite sporting only SBC codec, it managed to deliver a good sound via SBC. Just take into consideration that this is a portable speaker marketed as an outdoor speaker and it is not meant to sound very HiFi. it is good enough for general listening but definitely it's not made for critical listening.

Bass
  • Bass on the Bang is good and its punchy and sub bass has got good rumble to it
  • However, do take note that placement of the speaker will affect its bass performance as well. An example, i placed the Bang on a wooden table and the bass response is balanced sounding to my ears. If i wear to put it in a corner, the bass is boosted in a way how sound travels, so yeah, trial and error if you are attempting to fine tune the bass response via placement
  • Setting the EQ to deep bass will get you to bass head kind of bass response if you fancy it
Mids
  • Midrange is average in my opinion and considering it is a bluetooth speaker, i honestly wouldn't criticize it due to the fact that it is a portable bluetooth speaker and it is only sporting SBC bluetooth codec
  • Male and Female vocal is average, it does feel a little lacking in terms of body
Treble
  • The treble on Bang is not harsh nor sibilant
  • You can easily tune it to your liking via the app itself
  • The details in this range is average which is to be expected, not to say its bad but its good enough
  • The details does get a little mushy when the track gets busy and loud
Final Thoughts
All in all, Bang is a very good portable speaker for the price loaded with features. One particular feature that's interesting is the TuneConn which allows multiple Bang to be paired together in order to create a "Party" like environment. While Bang is not exactly a HiFi portable speaker so to speak, however the audio quality and the features are good for the price and i have no reason not to recommend this. One thing to note, it is very loud! On my phone, say i have 10 volume steps, on 2/10, i put the Bang in my living room and the sound is able to fill the living room. Pretty impressive.
A solid 4/5 for Bang

Intro:

As part and parcel to a pre-release copy of the Bang, there is a certain amount of wonder as to what the item will sound like as well as keeping the secret for the proper moment. I have reviewed other Tronsmart equipment including the Onyx Prime TWS earbud and the Force 2 BT speaker (which my daughter absconded with...). I have appreciated their desire to make a product, which fits into the niche but also comes across as slightly different. In a good way. The company does seem to have good ideas but are brought to light almost like they let other company’s make the mistakes then correct them with the Tronsmart version.

I again thank Tronsmart for the review sample, and it has been a fun little secret to keep. What follows are my words, and mine alone for good or ill; but they are mine.

Unboxing:

A larger, heavier box than I expected arrived, so I knew the speaker was of a good size. Laden with all sorts of graphics, the box is informative. Opening the box, you find a plastic bag, which contains the charging cord as well as the manual information and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm connecting cable. Taking the speaker out, which is protected in a plastic bag and form-fitting hard foam, you again realize the heft of the speaker. In watching the informative video, you realize it is a hefty throw into the ocean (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KR7A30NTjzWBXAhPWp5oAiRhVh4QDHpm/view?usp=drive_web).

Build/Functions:

The Bang is IPX6 waterproof and the above video link describes that decidedly. I have always appreciated the build of the Tronsmart models, even if they have quite a bit of plastic. Solid of fit and feel, the parts mesh together coherently, without bother. Buttons are hard to see, since the unit is all-black when not lit. Those buttons are easy to learn and the function of them is good as per previous Tronsmart experience. Going from left to right you have the NFC area for connectivity. TuneConn is next, followed by Mode, Volume -, Play/Pause, Volume +, EQ indicator, and last the power button. A BT connection light shares the space with the power button.

The back had a rubberized cover over the charging port, Aux-in port, micro SD card slot, USB-A, and USB-C port. The connectivity is multi, and I had no issues across the spectrum. The fabric covering around the important parts might collect sand and grit, but this does not hinder the unit at all and a quick cleaning takes care of most of it.

As seen from the pictures, each button controls multiple functions much like a TWS BT earphone. Once mastered, switching functions or options is all but intuitive. You can even use the speaker to answer phone calls as well as hook up to 100 (yes one century) speakers in concert for a whole musical appreciation tour. The app, which can be downloaded for either iPhone or Android is easy to use, with included EQ settings or a customizable option. You can even change light settings from the app. It is a simple to use app as well.

Once the music starts, the front panel and side sub woofers will light around the ends. You can have the unit light in various colors or leave it on your favorite but changing is not a bad way to go. One would note than leaving the light on change mode shortens battery life to only about 8 hours. Light off and it is about 15 hours (50% volume on each). This will drop even more if you use the USB-C port for charging your smartphone, but the included powerbank is a nice addition to have. I can confirm both the light off and light show on battery estimates. Over the last two months, I have run the test three times each and all came in within 1/2-3/4 hour of the estimates. Differential use would account for the discrepancies, but to me fall within guidelines.

Sound (w/ functionality):

Summary:

The Bang emits plenty of bass, when using the app and the4 “Deep Bass” setting. But even without, the quantity of bass is quite good. The Force 2 BT speaker while decent, lacked bass to me. The Bang ramps that bass up so you can feel it to a certain extent. Mids are pushed forward as you would expect, since most of the vocals come through in this range. Treble extension is good, without grating. Tronsmart also promotes a 360-degree sound, and I can attest that to be mostly true. You do lose coherency when moving around, but that is to be expected. This is not a sound bar after all. Overall this is a very nice step forward for the Tronsmart brand and this is one I will not let my daughter abscond with any time soon.

Moar:

On Pink Floyd’s live version of Comfortably Numb, I had the Bang on the floor, with Deep Bass playing. I could feel that bass a bit through the round rubberized feet a bit, giving a somewhat subwoofer feel to the sound. I will note that that bass did overshadow the mids and especially the vocals. But put the speaker in a good place above the floor and coherency came back nicely. I will also note that detail was lost in the Deep Bass setting, and an emphasis of the lower treble note came through to account for that added bass. The result was a somewhat more V-shaped sound. Running the Default sound setting restored order, with the mids coming back to the forefront. Treble note is mostly EQ dependent, but when in default mode, they were pleasantly bright. Switching to "Rock" inside made them mostly intolerable to me. In my preferred "Deep Bass" mode, the sound from on high was worthy among the best BT speakers I have heard at this price.

Purposely turning the speaker approximately 75-degrees off the front, I could still get a good sense of the “surround sound,” enabling me to hear each side pretty well. This is a limitation of most BT portable speakers, but I can see the progression towards soundbars nicely. Not there yet but moving towards that actual surround sound.

Switching to the “Hi-Fi” mode on the app brings all forward, like adding approximately 6-10dB of sound. This setting along with “Rock” might be the desired settings for an outdoor use. To me they were just too much for indoor. “Classical” brought sub-bass up nicely and the lower mids promoting the bass line quite nicely to me. My favored would be Default, Deep Bass & Classical in any order song dependent.

Los Lobos Poquito Para Aqui is a favorite of mine for judging bass line (plus Los Lobos kicks arse). Playing the Bang on Deep Bass provided me with a thumping bass-loving sound, which was very good. All else could be almost lost as a result but I did not mind. “Rock” setting to me fell flat, and my favored three settings were the chosen ones for this song.

Female vocals such as Susan Tedeschi came across as vibrant and forward, especially on the “Vocal” setting. Her sumptuous voice sounds quite melodious on the Bang, and I could see happily pairing two of these together and living with this in an outdoor setting.

BT speakers at this time are still not the best regarding a clarity-driven sound, but the gap is closing, and I can hear the difference through the Bang. This is not meant to be the audiophile detail monster of your bookshelf speakers but rather a quickly connected speaker that can certainly provide the foundation for music at an outdoor setting.

IMG_0520.jpg

Functions:

As mentioned without much memorization, the functionality can be mastered. Even by this old person, I was able to quickly learn and all but be able to use the buttons on the unit itself without fuss. Youngers will of course do this much more quickly.

TuneConn is used for connecting multiple units. I only had one so I was unable to test this feature. SoundPulse on the other hand worked by either pushing the button on the top or in the app. With SP on, there is even more push of the mids, again making this a good setting for the outdoor situation.

Phone functionality was good as well. I could easily answer calls from the speaker using the correct buttons (play/pause). You can even redial the last number in your phone by pressing play/pause 2x. I had my son call and we conversed as normal. Once over I was able to quickly redial him using that function.

Finale:

Tronsmart are doing good sensible business right now. They are not jumping on every trend or every latest trick without thoughtful thinking. I appreciate this as many current companies are flashing units almost monthly or weekly to “keep it fresh.” To me this is not Tronsmart’s MO. Theirs is of careful deliberation and addition of technology once it has been proven beneficial. Yes, they do produce models fairly quickly, but not at the speed many of their peers do. Deliberate, thoughtful functionality makes for a unit, which comes out as the fully finished product. Even without some of the latest CODEC’s, the unit is still worthy since the most likely scenario places this outdoors. And as such, I can recommend the Bang for a portable BT speaker in all but the toughest outdoor conditions. This one would be at home in a northern Michigan winter as easily as South Beach in the summer. And isn’t that what we ask of our outdoor gear? Oh, and this one also sounds quite good as well. Give it a listen.

ACCESSORIES

2) 1 x Aux Cable

BUILD/UTILITY

The Bang’s build is pretty robust, I’ve nothing to complain in terms of build. The bang is made of ABS plastic for the handle and base, while the rest of the speakers are covered in a mesh-like material.

The added handle bar on top makes it portable for on-to-go usage, and at 3 kg, this set is relatively light.

There are 2 rubber feet at the bottom to give added grip and friction on surfaces.

Dimensions.PNG

Although the Tronsmart Bang is on the larger side, with bigger speaker sizes, that generally translates to mooooooooore power – indeed, the Bang can get deafeningly loud, which we will talk about below.

5.jpeg

The Bang can be used horizontally or even vertically.

The Bang is advertised to have waterproofing of IPX6 rating. While this rating is not meant for the speakers to be submerged totally underwater, it can resist high-pressure water jets and heavy sprays of water, hence making it suitable for use at the beach or at pools for parties.

At the anterior portion of the Bang, there are a row of buttons for various manual controls.

2.jpeg

Buttons.PNG

These are what the buttons do respectively. We will talk about the SoundPulse and TuneConn buttons at the last section of this review, but the rest are pretty self explanatory.

The Bang turns on and off easily with holding the power button down for a few seconds.

Config 1.PNG

Config 2.PNG

The buttons work as advertised.

Pressing the "Play/Pause" button for 8 seconds reverts the Bang to factory settings.

The speaker will automatically power off after 1 hour if there are no bluetooth devices paired. When the battery is low, the Bang will also power off automatically.

At the posterior portion of the Bang, there are various ports (covered by a rubberized rectangular plug)

6.jpeg

7.jpeg

Back.PNG

These are what the various ports are for, respectively.

The aux in port (3.5 mm) is useful to play music from DAPs, smartphones or even laptops with 3.5 mm connectors, whereas the SD card slot allows one to play music stored on SD cards. The max limit of SD cards is 128 GB according to Tronsmart's manual.

From the USB-A port, one can connect USB thumbdrives/flashdrives in to play music, and there is a similar 128 GB limit. Interestingly, this USB-A port can also function as a laptop or smartphone charger on the fly, in case of emergency charging needs.

Pressing the M button on the front panel of the Bang allows one to cycle through the various modes.

There is a small hole with these ports to do a hard reset too, using a small card pin, if needed.

While there is no radio transmitter in the Bang, since one can connect music to it via NFC, Aux-in cable, USB flashdrives, SD cards and bluetooth, this makes the Bang extremely versatile, depending on which source one wants to play the music from.

Charges.PNG

Each LED light signifies 25% of the battery, so a fully charged device shows 4 LED lights on, whereas 25% battery remaining shows only 1 light on. With an external app, one can see the exact battery percentage (discussed below).

FUNCTION/CONNECTIVITY

I had no issues pairing the Bang with multiple bluetooth devices (both android and apple based, and even some DAPs like the Sony A55), they recognized the Bang easily.

Bluetooth connectivity is extremely stable on the Bang, it can hit about 10 meters or so with thick walls, and around 20 meters without obstructions. I didn't have any drop outs even thru thick walls, though there were occasional stutters with these thicker walls.

The Tronsmart Bang boasts NFC connectivity, which in theory makes android device pairing faster and smoother. I'm not an apple device user, but I understand apple gear does not have NFC support (please correct me if I'm wrong). Apple devices can still be paired via bluetooth to the Bang via the usual way. FWIW, I tried some relative's apple devices with the Bang and they paired well, though a bit slower than my android phones.

The Tronsmart Bang only supports SBC codec. Unfortunately, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC are not supported codecs, which is a bit of a bummer. I hope Tronsmart can add more codec supports in their future iterations!

I didn’t detect much latency with music via bluetooth or wired connection, and I'm also glad to report that the Bang supports Voice Assistant devices.

A very nice addition, is that of the Tronsmart app, which is free and downloadable on apple and android smartphones. In fact, when I first downloaded it yesterday, there was already a firmware update available!

EQ modes.PNG

The app allows one to see the exact battery percentage on the first page. The second page allows one to explore EQ presets – which we will talk about below. The third page allows one to turn off the speakers, adjust the LED settings (eg pulsing or colours) and use various play modes.

3.jpeg

4.jpeg

The LED lights are quite a cool feature for parties, especially if one wants to head-bop to the music. Think of a mini portable discotheque on the go! One can turn off the LED totally, leave it on all the time, or a last mode which allows the LED to change with the rhythm of the music. While in practice, I thought the LED rhythm changes were pretty on beat with the music, but for some complex bass lines, the LED changes couldn't keep up (that's just me nitpicking!).

In terms of battery life, the Bang is advertised to have up to 8 hours (50% volume) with LED on, and up to 15 hours without LED. I do think it is thereabouts, but as per most electronics, the battery life will be expected to progressively worsen with repeated charges. But do take note that the LED does burn the battery life significantly (around 50% of non LED mode), so do take this in consideration.

The Bang's charging time is ~4.5 hours, which unfortunately, is a little bit on the slow side.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

Insides.PNG

The Bang contains 4 drivers in total - 2 tweeters and 2 woofers and can even output 60W power.

This translates to big bass that is jaw rattling (on some EQ modes) and lots and lots of power on tap. In an indoor setting, I doubt one will run out of headroom and volume. In fact, one may subconsciously try to boost the volume for enjoyment, and the Bang can go to almost deafening levels of loudness; so be careful, as hearing health can be affected with prolonged loud noises. Indeed, the Bang do not distort at very loud volumes, which is a sign of a well implemented driver, making it great for outdoor party usage.

Of note, around 20 meters away from the Bang, I could still hear good clarity and nuances in music and vocals.

When describing sonic properties of a speaker, the sound is affected by the material one places them on (eg hollowness, density etc), and perhaps acoustics of the room versus outdoor usage, the distance one is from the speaker, and the volume played at (Fletcher Munson curve). Also hearing health plays a part.

In general, about a few meters away from the speakers (moderate volumes), the Bang’s stock tuning (default) sounds U-shaped. The stock tuning has above average bass texturing, with bass north of neutral. There is good subbass extension, the midrange and treble are quite well balanced without any particular frequency encroaching into the others. Playing the Bang at louder volumes will make it more V-shaped (ie boosted treble and bass). This default tuning is quite all rounder for most music genres.

The various other EQ modes are as described below:
- The SoundPulse profile (can be changed on app or physically on the front of the speakers) gives more clarity and heft to the music, with more bass extension.

- The “Deep Bass” mode gives the Bang a jaw rattling (even headache inducing) rumble that should please any basshead worth his or her salt. This mode is good for bass forward genres eg EDM, hip hop. Coupled with the changing LED lights make this a great party device!

- The 3D mode gives the Bang a better soundstage, though music sounds a bit thinner. This can potentially be a useful setting for videos and movies.

- The HIFI mode gives the Bang boosted upper frequencies with a thinner note weight. This is good for perhaps critical listening and analysis, or even podcasts, meetings and lectures.

- Classical mode seems to be a more boosted U shaped than the default tuning, with added clarity.

- Vocal mode gives the Bang a midcentric tuning – ie subbass and treble roll off. This mode is good for vocals and acoustic, but may not be that great for bass forward music.

- The Rock mode provides a V shaped, boosted treble signature with depressed lower mids. I found this mode to be a bit harsh and sibilant at times, but this also depends on one's treble sensitivities.

The last area to talk about is Tronsmart's TrueConn feature. Tronsmart advertises that activating this button allows one to output synchronized music with up to 100+ other Tronsmart Bangs. Unfortunately, I didn't have another Bang device to test this out, but in theory, this allows multiple Bang units to be used at concerts or carnivals to create a huge auditory fest!

CONCLUSIONS

The Tronsmart Bang is a very portable and versatile speaker, and is something all well-respecting partygoers must remember to bring! Every party becomes a literal big bang with it!

The Bang has lots of power on tap, and also has great BT connectivity and excellent sound quality. An app can also fine-tune multiple EQ settings on the fly! Having IPX6 waterproofing makes it suitable for pool/beach use too.

While not exactly party poopers, some small nitpicks would be a longer charging time and no aptX, aptX HD, AAC, LDAC support.

The Bang is truly the life of the party and is a great audio device to bring around! Don't leave home without it!
