Greetings! 💨🦖

This is a review of the Whizzer HE03D, which the company themselves have provided me to review.

18.jpg

DISCLAIMER: I WAS PROVIDED THE UNIT IN EXCHANGE FOR A NO-FRILLS, UNBIASED REVIEW. I AM NEITHER PAID NOR COMMISSIONED TO PROVIDE A SKEWED REVIEW.

The Whizzer HE03D boasts as the flagship midrange device from Whizzer, which stunned the audiophile community with its one-of-a-kind glass faceplate look (in collaboration with J.Idea+ Studio) and an innovative M.D.B.S. (Multiple Dampening Balance System) acoustic structure inside the IEM. The beauty of this IEM is not limited to its physical aspects though, as it nicely compliments the spacious and modern sound signature it features. Despite some tuning woes that I have with the HE03D, it is truly a great marriage between material innovation and sound, with a build quality that outdoes the price that it asks.

➡️ Presentation
It is one of the most beautiful and elegant unboxings that I have ever experienced in my time as a reviewer. From the box design, the graphic layout, prints used in the text, to the overall presentation, everything is magnificent and coherent. The front box art is nicely designed with the name of the IEM and the same silhouette that you will see in the IEM’s faceplate, making you feel excited with what it will look like inside. The sides of the box are adorned with what it seems to be the engineering blueprint/silhouette of the acoustic structure of the IEM, which really adds to the elegant presentation. All the graphics that you will see in the front is only a slip-style paperback cover, as the true box of the HE03D lies beyond that. The only cons that I can point out is the staple Chi-Fi grammar and fluff in the wordings present in all the paperwork and descriptions in the package.

➡️ Product
As you open the box, you are immediately greeted by the stunning faceplate of the HE03D. There are no words that can describe how it looks in-person, as promotional images don’t seem to give it justice visually and aesthetically. Whizzer knows that it should be the one the owner should see first in unboxing the IEM, and it does succeed in giving that pure rush of visual dopamine. It is also accompanied by a nice graphic of what seems to be a blueprint for a dynamic driver, together with the IEM’s name at the bottom. The faceplate shines in the light in a spectacular manner, and the graphic is seen when a particular angle of light hits the glass. This results in an almost-novel visual experience every time that you will look at it, further enhancing the experience. The faceplate is GREATLY complemented by wonderful CNC metal work as its body, with nicely rose gold-colored vents as a part of its proprietary acoustic venting system.

➡️ Particulars
At the bottom, we see the reason why the box is very t h i c c. The “pretty vegan leather box” (yes, that is what the protective box is really named in the listing HAHAHA) is large and thick, which is more than enough to house and secure the IEM when it is stored in there. I don’t know if it is truly vegan leather or not, but it feels high-quality and still haven’t chipped on me in the months that I have used it. Inside the box, there are 3 types of ear tips inside in 3 (4 in the case of the soundstage tip) sizes, resulting in a whopping 20 tips in the package. These tips feel VERY high quality and are different enough from each other to warrant the variety (vocal tips, reference tips, and soundstage tips). The reference tips are what caught my eye the first, as it is in a shape that I haven’t seen before, which probably plays a big role in balancing out the sound that the HE03D outputs into the ear. The other accessory that is present together with the box is the cable, which I will be talking about later. Other than those, we are finally presented with the obligatory paperwork that is present in every tech/audio equipment we have. Rather than making it boring, it follows the theme of elegant presentation of the product by putting it in a nicely designed flap in the inner box and encasing the paperwork in a high-quality mini envelope.

𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 & 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩 💨💨💨💨🦖 (out of 5)

✳ Build Quality
In the months that I have had this IEM, I have always gushed about how GOOD the build quality of the IEM is. It wins over my bias of properly hefty and weighty IEMs, as you can physically feel the quality of the materials used in the HE03D. This is an aspect that they have thought out and executed in the greatest way possible. The glass faceplate is much more durable than what it seems to look like, as it withstood the rigors of my regular usage in the months that I spent with it. The paint used in the body seems to be also of high quality, as there are no paint chipping present. Even the little text prints of the proprietary systems used in the body and vents haven’t faded out in time. The only gripe that I have with this IEM build-wise is the cable that it comes with, which feels like an afterthought. I’ve seen other reviews that corroborate with the observation I have had in this aspect. Even though it does look good in an aesthetic aspect as it is color-matched with the IEM, but its overall feel and build isn’t in par with its competitors in the price range. The wire is only what I am pointing out here, as the splitter and the jack “head” is of the same great quality as the IEM itself.

1664270125643.jpeg

✳ Comfort
This also checks out with my preference of “medium fit”, that is, the IEM isn’t too deeply snug in the ear, nor it is too light with the fit. I like the IEM sitting comfortably in my ear while still feeling that it is there. The HE03D feels exactly like this, to much of my approval. The gentle curves and groves that the IEM has also greatly contributes to the general comfort it has even in its bulky nature. Although excellent in my opinion, not everyone can like this kind of fit as we all have different preferences on how we like our IEMs positioned in our ears. Despite this, every tip included in the package also has an extremely comfortable fit to them, despite having different feel inside the ear.

➡️ Signature
The HE03D is a great choice in the price range, as it performs as well as it sounds. The general feeling of excellent sound reproduction and wonderful technicalities are present, which alone grants the accolades that it received in reviews. This IEM has all the ingredients in having a thick, luscious sound: great innovative acoustic structure, excellent dynamic driver material, and a venting system that is above all its peers. It does succeed in some of that, but it trips over what its strength should be: a multi-layered chunky sound. Instead, it goes for the route of being lean in its general presentation, which brings out pros if the listener prefers a modern Harman sound. It also has a quirky driving feature of having a higher-than-usual impedance despite having high sensitivity. This can result in shrill listening experiences when the listener is not aware of how to drive IEMs in a more knowledgeable way. Personally, it needs some EQ modifications and a good warm source to bring out the beast that truly lies within it.

1664270162037.jpeg

✳ The bass is fast yet powerful yet lacks a substantial amount of meat that really can make an impact to the listener. Seeing the graph, it focuses more on the mid-bass frequencies while rolling a whole lot of subbass, which can result into kicks having accurate punch but no note weight behind them. But even with this bass response, it still translates to a cleaner presentation with virtually no bleeding into other frequencies. As stated in their promotional material, this is suited for more modern pop and dance genres, as it can sufficiently carry grooves and rhythm. The bounciness and natural timbre of kick drums are preserved, which really makes for a pleasing bass experience. Just don’t expect kicks and pulses beating like there’s no tomorrow.
✳ The midrange is what I feel is the weakest point in the tuning of the HE03D. It has the most peculiar dips and peaks that don’t compliment well with each other, especially knowing the amount of innovation put into the acoustic structure and materials in the IEM. It has a noticeable lack of lower midrange to central midrange frequencies, which can really affect the timbre that the HE03D has. It also has the most peaky and abrupt pinna gain elevation that I have seen. These two aspects combined results in a shrill and hollow presentation of the midrange, which sounds unnatural and lean. Both male/female vocals and instruments are affected by this signature, which can feel a bit weird and underwhelming according to your midrange preferences. EQ-ing these frequencies solves these problems AND unlocks what a beast of thickness and meat that the HE03D can potentially be, which is hindered by its tuning. Nonetheless, the midrange can still satisfy those who are fans of a Harman-targeted IEM, as it offers the lean presentation and sense of “balance” that they like.
✳ The treble is the strength of the HE03D and is the area where I can appreciate the innovations that they did for this IEM. It ticks all my boxes in terms of treble energy and airiness, which at times justifies the decisions Whizzer made into making this a leaner IEM in terms of signature. The unique acoustic structure and vents for this IEM translates into more air being pulled in and pushed out of the IEM, resulting in a treble presentation that is one of the class leaders in its price range. I subjectively can definitely hear the science of these innovations in the treble, which is put into great effect. I can almost list no woes about the treble on the HE03D, as it deserves all the praise with no reservations.

➡️ Soundstage
This is another aspect that I can hear as a direct result of all the technological innovations they did on this IEM. The lean tuning of the HE03D again is justified in this aspect, as it offers a lot more space in the auditory space rather than having a thicker presentation. It does sometimes sound like an open-back IEM, but warrants a track to be not busy in its instrumentation. This is because of its average imaging capabilities, which can sometimes overload the listener to a single space or corner in the image even if the “usable” soundstage is cavernous. To sum these aspects up, it has excellent height but has a subpar width.

INTRO & SUMMARY

WHIZZER is still looking for the best tuning on dynamic drivers since 2015, when they started to be know as the actual brand (previously named OPERA HOUSE) with the A15. Nearest releases, the HE01 got attention for the community, bringing a nice warmth coloration tuning, and a beautiful shell and build.
For this release, WHIZZER applies their latest patent, a Driver with a capsule configuration that promises a 0 distortion on the reproduction. If the interior sound as good as the exterior looks, we got a winner here.

DESIGN & BUILD 92%
  • A 2pin connector over an enormous 5-axis CNC full metal shell. Its one of the best metal earphone I've ever try
  • A splendorous black painting, crowned with a beautiful 3D curved glass with a beautiful “star” on the top. The build on this earphone is just superb, and surpasses a lot of more expensive ones
  • The capsule is weight is average, but the problem is more the bulky and how the mold forces it to stay out of your ears.
  • 3 Holes vents plus 3 cavity on the top of the shell create a semi-open configuration. You are not gonna find Driver flex here
  • IEven with the semi-open design, the isolation is really nice, don't need a foam tip to be isolated. It has a little of sound leakage
  • It could be uncomfortable because of the bulky capsule, but surprisingly the comfort is not as bad as it looks. Can be weared for hours without notice
  • The package, and all the accessories included (case, tips…) are probably the best I've see on the sub200€. The case has enough room for the capsules and the cable provided, and the original Whizzer tips got some interesting ideas. The cable tends to tangle but its really nicely made and looks as good as the shell
nHk6DnB.jpg

PERFORMANCE & TUNING 88%
  • Can´t be used from the phone, I would recommend put some energy on this driver, the bass sound “liberated” when is plugged to the BTR7 or the GRYPHON
  • When this mid-bass tuning, it has his own personality, so the source doesn't matter, maybe someone that control the top frequencies could be a nice pick, and a source with good separation is good for avoid congestion
  • For the tips, I pick the “reference black” which has a open bore configuration but it a little bit larger
🔈Driver. 12mm DLC Dynamic Driver on Semi-open structure

With a mid-bass bump like the one on the graph, and no subbass this earphone maybe doesn’t suit the audiophile contemporary standards. But if you don’t see the FR, and just focus on the sound, are going to find a precious U-shape, with a warmer tonality and so much body on it. Maybe it has a lot of bodyness, and could be over-colored, but this kind of analogue sound with the incredible technology of the driver, which allowed to play every track with 0 distortion, make this earphone one of the best contender for mid-bass lover (like me)
A little bit hotter on the top frequencies, sometimes sibilant, but maintaining a coherence which is difficult to find on this kind of tuning. Maybe I´m being a little subjective here, but I really think this are one of the best tuning with this emphasis on midbass, with a nice "hump" but still having coherence, presence and texture in all frequencies

Whizzer-HE03D-frequency-response_result.jpg

I usually try to EQ to find the best performance of any equipment, no matter if it is a TV, PC or headphone. Audio shouldn't be an exception. Usually plays viaroon or[/color]UAPP, using stock cables. Just some tip rolling to get a proper seal.

LOWs 94%
  • Bass is clearly mid-focused, it's the start of the show, and clearly pushing the body and musicality of all frequencies
  • Find a tuning focused on mid-bass with this level of texture & detail is a strange thing. Really impressive & clean bass(mid)
  • In the technical part, the dynamics, rumble and punch are top-level. Looking at the graph maybe u would miss more subbass, but It really develop a nice sensation of air and rumble to your ears
  • Needs some time to shine, and some burning (brain or driver one, choose your preference). If you find a nice tips to get the seal, and forgive the lack of subbass, Its probably one of the best on this category
MIDs 86%
  • Even with that midbass bump, mid frequencies are in the center of the shows, with an over-average coloration
  • Strong voices sound a little bit weird, like too emphasized, while the thin ones are delicious. For example, Amy (winehouse) sounds with more body that you are gonna find in other earphone, and a little bit "darker"
  • Timbre is a little bit exaggerated, but sounds correct, more colored than metallic
  • Sibilant tones are just around the corner, but nothing to worried about, and scales really nice with volume and sources
HIGHs 83%
  • Some excess on the presence of the frequencies , with some sounds with more emphasized than a neutral tuning, but they are not sharp, helping to sound cohesive
  • About sparkling, the sensation is good, with stuff going around your hear
  • The capacity to reveal is a little less-average, but they are more than enough to sound enjoyable

TECH & STAGE 83%

RESOLUTION 77%
  • The ability to layer the music is nice, but its clearly affect for the vertical stage
  • Texture is not the best on the segment, but for a relaxed presentation like this is nice. The bass got more than enough information, having rumble and definition at the same time
  • Its not a detail monster, but is more than capable to work nicely to reveal
TIMBRE 82%
  • The midbass make everything sound warmer than necessary, but and the same time the body note and relaxed way of presentation makes this earphone easy to hear during long sessions
  • Best for male voices, the female ones seems to have more body than necessary, anyways the clean and relaxed presentation for both genres should be a nice pick for unplugged albums
  • Instruments sounds robust, every drum/guitar has a pleasant rumble inside your ear, and I'm still surprised about the tech behind this driver, it's hard to find a song with bleed problems. I really like the sound of piano on these earphones
  • I would say is one of the best for jazz/unplugged albums
STAGE 79%
  • More vertical than horizontal, not the widest one. It's on the intimate side. Probably is caused by the "in your head" voices, just set backs in your eyes. Its like having a two vertical wall of sounds (bass) with the voices inside your head
  • In sense of space, like I told, things seems to be very close to your head, part of that is for the presence of the (clear) bass, the details anyways
  • On this section I should say; this earphone has that reverb/concert effect, I usually like that way of presentation, getting the body of sound to make the track more musical, but It's not a "natural stage"
IMAGING 87%
  • With an intimate presentation and only one driver, the technology and tuning of the driver allowed to have a nice separation
  • Voices come right between your eyes, bass is around your hear and details come from your side. Maybe is not the most coherent presentation, but doesn't bleed and maintain the voices separated from the bass
DYNAMICS 94%
  • Having this kind of velocity and no-resonances make this one of the best single DDs I've tried. Capable to resolve tracks with multiple layering even with this kind of tuning
  • The speed, is impressive to maintain a superb level of recovery. Tight and concrete notes, make this earphone one of the best on this section
OUTRO & VALORATION 88%

I have to confess, I´m addicted to the hump, but when it comes with this dynamics, this intimate stage and some details coming from afar... its for sure this is a masterpiece. Probably some equipment is more technical, or the timbre is nicely done, but get everything done with a 12mm DD, its just impressive.
Apart from that, the package, cable, design and build, make this product a bargain, just the size of the shell, the upper-mid presentation and some details keep them on the 4★ rating
If you are a Mid-Bass lover, and like some of the next earphones I´m going to compare with the HE03D, just jump on this train, you are not going to regret it

I really loved to write this review, enjoying music and put all my effort on describe what are the good/bad things of an IEM, thanks to all people that arrive to the end of this review, you can find more information about comparison versus other earphones, and some albums I recommend hearing with this item.

  • Even with this precious shell, quality is better on the Whizzer, Fit is better, Weight is tremendous
  • More hump, more highs, its the v of hell
  • Tuning clearly affected the technicalities, but its funnier than the Whizzer
  • An underrated gem that probably just find a contender

HE03D Contender to the throne
  • Its made on 2020 meanwhile the Ikko is from the old decade
  • More technical, not so aggressive on tuning
  • The stage is better, the bass is near to be funnier
