I'm not sure whether or not there are counterfeit M50s floating around, but Audio Technica probably will not honor your warranty if you don't purchase them from an authorized reseller.

Dont take the risk as there are a lot of fakes in the market (my first M50 was a fake and it costs $80). Buy from Amazon and you will have no regrets.
