hi all!
im iso new headphones for mostly gaming (some fps mostly rpgs/rts)
ive heard good things about these 3 but cant decide which 1 to pick
i wont have enough for an amp if i go with the akg or beyer but i will probly get an e9 later on
all my headphones have been generic 10$-20$ so ill probly be blown away by anything
are the akg and beyer significantly better than the ad700s?
if its only nominal then i would just get the ad700s

I think any of the Beyer line would suit you fine, i suggest getting the Beyer 990 used at 200ohms for something like that. If you are not going to be using a sound card you want to get 250ohms or lower, if you have a sound card its fine if you get the 600ohm Beyers.

I can't speak for the k701, but assuming your talking about the 600 ohm 880's, when given enough juice, they are significantly better than the ad700's imo.  I haven't touched my ad700's since getting my 880's.   Still, at their price point, the ad700s are quite capable performers; although I wasn't too fond of them for fps games cause the gunshots sounded unnatural due to the (lack of) bass.

I might also keep an eye out for a k501.  They are kind of like an ad700 but with much better imaging and imo a bit better tone to the bass (still no impact, though).  I haven't had the chance to game with these yet (haven't had time to game at all since January), but I think these would be great for that task.  They are great for classical too.  Shame akg stopped making these.

I was thinking/suggesting he could bump it up to the 600ohm 990's if he got them used. That sound card should be fine with 250ohm headphones, and should be close to sufficient for the 600ohm headphones as well.

I felt it was the weird upper mids and treble that made gunshots sound off, not so much the lack of bass.

If you want bass impact, then look elsewhere. I have the dt880s, which I really love, but I think you wouldn't like them if you're looking for bass. I love them for the clear details and great mids and treble. The bass is there but its not a lot. I think the quantity is perfect. That's just my opinion. No comment on th k701 since I don't have it.

K70x and 600-ohm beyers are high end, or "hifi", AD700 is mid-fi, and not even one of the best of mid-fi at that.  Enough said.

Some AD700 users have posted claiming that K70x is the next step up, some say AD2k, some say AD900, some say DT880, it depends.
DT880 and K70x strive for a more neutral-like sound, AD2000 is more colored, and AD900 is AD700's bigger brother.  Not a big difference between 900 and 700.
A2000X is the way to go after AD700, in my opinion.

I would suggest 250-ohm Beyers or AD900.
Ultrasone Pro900 if you want more bass.
HFI780 (or Pro750?) is another good one from what I've read, you should read up on those.

There's a few comparisons around if you search.
