AEON, MrSpeakers' New Closed Back Planar Magnetic Headphone

Can anyone confirm if the only changes between the Aeon flow closed and closed RT are the pads? I noticed that most of the (obvious) differences are that the pads on the RT have perforations while the stock do not. Since my OG flow closed's pads are pretty worn I was thinking of getting the RT pads, would this work?
I can't speak to the RT but after 2 sets of the original pads disintegrating on my head after about a year of use, I highly suggest the Dekoni Elite Sheepskins (not the fenestrated or the hybrid ones). Not only do they have stiffer foam, but they also improve (imo) the frequency response - they slightly elevate the subbass and tame the highs. My only gripe with them is the sticky plastic pad is slightly larger than the cup so the fit is not reflective of the price.

I’ll take a look at them! I use Oratory’s eq often so changing the pads to that would make it more difficult to eq imo

I think they reduced the driver damping a small amount on the RT/X models vs the originals in addition to the partially fenestrated pads. If you have the OG though I think changing to the RT pads will go a long ways towards getting you the RT sound. From there just add a little eq to taste and enjoy!
Gotcha! Seems like it’ll be alright if I go ahead with the rt pads then. Curious if anyone has done a disassembly of both headphones to see any internal differences

Hi
I recently bought an aeon flow closed headphones.
What kind of amplifier would you recommend? (From Europe.)
I’ve found the mojo to do a good job on these as a portable. For desktop amps, I like how just a plain Schiit magni sounds on them. Plenty of power for these. I have the original AFC, not the RT or 2, and I prefer a little EQ on them. Low shelf <80 Hz, and a few tweaks in the treble

What's your budget?
For a European manufacturer, I'd probably look at one of the Pro-ject offerings, either of the S2s depending on whether you needed a dac or not.
The Aeons are not a portable headphone, so avoid daps and the like, unless like the AK Kann Alpha, that's there specific purpose (full disclosure, on this topic I've come out against the Mojo (primarily on voicing), but supported the ifi Black Label)

That’s interesting. I like them with the Mojo, but I primarily use them on Roon anyway with EQ. I do have an iFi signature on order that’s supposed to arrive tomorrow, so it will be cool to compare with mojo, which I’ve had for years

Some people on this very topic have recommended the Mojo for the Aeon. My position is that while it may work for them (and I have tried it having had a Mojo for a couple of years contemporaneously with the Aeons), I believe that to get the best from the Aeons (and why buy it unless that is your aim), you need to run it from something more robust in the power supply area - it needs, nay demands, current. To my ears, the difference between the Mojo, iFi Black Label and my Naim Dac V1, is audible to pretty much anyone. The bass moves from being a bit pallid and more of a background thrum to being an integral part of the music, driving it forward. Instrumental timbre becomes more focused and separating strands of music easier. This is to my ears and my tastes.

Hey Roskodan,

Seems like you were pretty active in the Aeon Flow Closed forum regarding eq. Would you mind linking your current eq for the AFC? I have been tinkering with Oratory's eq, but still can't seem to solve the slightly dull sound (at least to my ears) that the AFC have.

All MrSpeakers, DCA headphones are seemingly "dull-ish", "damped", in sound, they like being played louder and also are easily affected by some kind of under-amp-ing and, or, over damping effect, these are low impedance and low efficiency drivers. Zeos from Z Reviews, in his DCA Stealth review, makes a case for how I've been feeling about MrSpeakers, DCA in regard to that.

On top of that, oratory1990 (as well as InnerFidelity) may have measured an early production or pre-production unit that may have had more bass vs the units that MrSpeakers was actually producing after launch. Although it may just be differences in measurements between different measurement rigs.

I use PEQ (Equaliser APO with PEACE GUI on Windows) with AutoEQ presets. AutoEQ has presets based on all major sites measuring headphones, including oratory1990, crinacle, innerfidelity and others.

I don't use EQ, just PEQ, so I can only provide my Equalizer APO, PEACE settings for PEQ (presets can be saved to a .txt file and imported into Equalizer APO by means of the PEACE GUI "Import" button).

On top of the AutoEQ oratory1990 AFC PEQ preset, I add an additional low shelf filter or two.
Filter 11: ON LS Fc 40 Hz Gain 3 dB Q 1.0
Filter 12: ON LS Fc 75 Hz Gain 2 dB Q 1.0

(Personally I like even more bass boost so I set the two low shelf filters double these values, at 6 dB and 4 dB respectivelly, with a pre-gain of -10 dB. :L3000: )
In which case the pre-amp gain must be adjusted to the new level (for the AutoEQ oratory1990 AFC preset, adding these two filters requires -4.8 dB pre-gain, since the graph shows a peak of +4.8 dB, top right corner number). Also note that I disabled some bands to get the desired PEQ curve.

Preamp: -3.6 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 25 Hz Gain -1.8 dB Q 1.43
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 885 Hz Gain -3.4 dB Q 1.50
