AKG K812 comparison to HD800

I see you have a HD800S in your signature - I'm guessing that means you didn't get the K812?

I had both the K812 and the HD800 for a while. I thought they were very similar, the most notable difference being exactly where the treble spike was in each, making certain tracks difficult to listen to. Agree with all of above that the HD800 sounded more 'distant'. I ended up keeping the AKG, getting rid of the HD800 and having no regrets.

I had the K-812 and HD-800S (as well as earlier having an HD-800). HD-800S has a lot more sub- and mid-bass than either of the other two, but lacks a bit of the sparkle up top. Bass response in the HD-800 is a bit tighter/cleaner than than the K-812. Both K-812 and HD-800 have treble spikes, for me it was just personal preference as to which type of spice I liked in the treble (the K-812). Have sold all of them now.

Did you use them for mixing/mastering purposes or just for recreational listening?

If for mixing/ mastering duties which one was more effective in your studio?

I used them for very amateur mixing and mastering at home. I wouldn't recommend either. They're a long way from flat/neutral. I think the HD-800 is the best of the three for that purpose, as it's extraordinarily revealing and you'll likely put in a little extra sub-bass in the mix to compensate for the bass-light FR.

I currently use the 64 Audio U10 with the M15 module - very neutral, feels great for mixing.

Am currently a/b-ing the HD8xx [w/full "sticker mod", Audio Envy ToneKraft cable and Oratory 1990 EQ] and the K812 [w/stock cable and Oratory 1990 EQ] and prefer the overall [tonal, dynamic and rhythmic] balance of the AKG. I also prefer the spatial presentation/realism of the K812.

[Associated gear: Hagerman Audio Labs Tuba amplifier (2x RCA 6BQ5), SMSL D400EX dac, NuPrime CDT-8 Pro transport or Apple Music]

To my ears the HD8xx sound better paired, running balanced, with the [ss] Violectric V222 [a fuller and more robust presentation overall], but I still give the K812 the edge.

Have been spending more time with the HD8xx [sticker-modded, Audio Envy hpc, Oratory 1990 EQ], now paired with the Violectric V222 [running chiefly single-ended].

To my ears, and with the associated equipment, the HD8xx definitely exhibit better synergy with the V222 than with the Hagerman Tuba, sounding more open, detailed and "at ease" under the driving force of the Violectric. The HD8xx now seem to gain the [slight?] edge in resolution [versus K812], while acquiring a more balanced sense of integrity/cohesiveness, while maintaining good separation/layering. The Sennheisers' tonality sounds a bit more open/rendered versus the K812's comparatively more concentrated tonality.

I am expecting an Arctic Cables [UPOCC copper] upgrade for the AKGs later this week and am therefore looking forward to potential improvements from the K812.

Ive had the K812s with a custom silver(master silver option)cable by lavricables paired with the SPL Phonitor 2 now for 3 months actively mixing and mastering audio for clients.
I can honestly say with experience and listening back to previous headphones I own that these are perfect for creating transparent and dynamic mixes and masters.
Sound stage is big and everything is audible, the SPL Phonitor 2 allows me to change the angle, cross feed, and depth of the audio with its parameters so I can hear a realistic reference of the audio. The cable upgrade was a great option, but the stock cable is great as well, maybe a 10 percent quality upgrade in the mid and high end frequency range to my ears.
