So a friend of mine recently bought a pair of Sennheiser HD558's and he love them! Right now he is running them from his motherboard soundcard, and he want something better. However, I don't know if he should go for a AMP/DAC combo or a soundcard? He is gaming, however he is also listening to classic music. Also, he is on a budget as even spending 200USD on a pair of headphones was a lot for him (Danish prices btw.)

I'm 100% new to this, but from what I've read (I'm wondering the same):
 
If you game and want the positional audio, prob best to get a soundcard and external amp for the headphones.
If you don't game, then the external dac might be a better choice.
